Well, it’s certainly nice to hear that the Republican presidential candidates don’t think that Stand Your Ground covers following someone and then shooting them to death as they beg for their life, but I think they’re not so much condemning George Zimmerman and the Sanford PD (both of which richly deserve it) as desperately trying to defend this horrible law.
The right wants the conversation to be about whether Stand Your Ground legalizes cold-blooded murder (“Of course not! What kind of bloodthirsty animals do you think we are?”), instead of the much more important question of whether it emboldens it, or about how often it provides de facto protection for murderers when there are no living witnesses to contradict their version of events.
Zappatero has made the eminently sensible suggestion that we reduce all tax rates to zero. Since conservative tax theory suggests that this would result in infinite tax revenue, it will put Republicans in an interesting catch-22 situation.
On the one hand, eliminating taxes has always been their fondest dream, and all that revenue would allow us to easily pay off the national debt, which they insist is a bigger existential threat to America than al Qaeda, communism and gay marriage squared.
On the other hand, think how much bigger the government could get, and how much more it could spend on lazy undeserving lucky duckies like old people and Cadillac-driving welfare queens. And that’s before we even talk about all the abortions, gun-confiscation squads, and FEMA re-education camps it could afford!
So you see, as much as the right might hate to admit it, those of us who oppose massive tax cuts are only doing it for their own good.
Despite Rush Limbaugh basically calling all women who use birth control sluts and prostitutes and pretty much spewing anti-woman (and anti-gay, and anti-minority) bile every single day, Peggy Noonan still thinks the left is worse because Matt Taibbi made a dick joke about her once.
That’s the way to do it, NYPD! Give ‘em a sweet taste of the nightstick!
But doesn’t NYPD have tasers? Jack ‘em up with some high voltage!
Billy clubs, tasers, pepper spray, whatever it takes to keep Marxist scum off the streets of New York, do it. These whiny deadbeats are a menace to public safety — scabies! tuberculosis! rape! — and if they refuse to disperse peacefully, they have thereby declared war on the law-abiding citizens of New York, whom the NYPD are sworn to protect and serve.
There are reports that a handful of Occupy protesters were hospitalized with injuries. Unfortunately, it was only a handful, and none of those injuries were wounds from 9mm pistols or 12-gauge riot guns.
There are certainly exceptions, but on the whole, the right uses cleaner language to say much uglier things.
One of my biggest disappointments since Obama’s election has been not just Obama’s despicable betrayal of Democratic ideals, but liberals and Democrats’ complete willingness to overlook those ideals simply because he’s nominally a member of the same team. Conservatives did the exact same thing when Bush was president, but I had really hoped progressives were better than that.
When loyalty trumps principles, those principles become meaningless. And right now neither party has any recognizable principles other than supreme executive power and blind loyalty to moneyed interests.
Premiere Networks, which syndicates the Rush Limbaugh show, told its affiliate radio stations that they are suspending national advertising for two weeks. Rush Limbaugh is normally provided to affiliates in exchange for running several minutes of national advertisements provided by Premiere each hour. These ads are called “barter spots.” These spots are how Premiere makes its money off of Rush Limbaugh and other shows it syndicates.
Premiere Networks, which distributes Limbaugh as well as a host of other right-wing talkers, sent an email out to its affiliates early Friday listing 98 large corporations that have requested their ads appear only on “programs free of content that you know are deemed to be offensive or controversial (for example, Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Tom Leykis, Michael Savage, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity).”
It’s nice to finally see them facing some kind of consequences, but I’ll believe they’re in real trouble when I see Rush and all the other professional hatemongers out on their asses. The same goes for believing that the GOP will actually pay an electoral price for its eternal war on women. I’ve been disappointed before.
The Arizona Senate passed a bill this week that gives doctors a free pass to not inform pregnant women of prenatal problems because such information could lead to an abortion.
In other words, doctors can intentionally keep critical health information from pregnant women and can’t be sued for it….
This bill is actually more disturbing than the Republicans seem to realize. Giving doctors such a free pass risks the lives of both the expectant mother and the fetus she carries. Prenatal care isn’t just for discovering birth defects and disabilities. It is also for discovering life threatening issues such as an ectopic pregnancy which often requires an abortion to save the life of the mother. With rare exceptions, ectopic pregnancies are not viable anyway, but Republicans are allowing anti-abortion doctors to keep life threatening information from pregnant women all because they are obsessed with stopping any and all abortions. Women may not know they have a life threatening condition until they die on the emergency room table. And the doctor couldn’t be sued.
Insane, horrible, murderous people. And the worst of it is that it was a Republican woman who sponsored this abomination.
From Michel Hiltzik’s column about how 501(c)4 “non-profit” organizations are used to bypass campaign finance disclosure requirements:
I don’t mean to pick on Rove or the Republicans here; Democratic Party operatives and the Obama campaign are certain to exploit the same dodge as fundraising for the November election kicks into gear.
“I can’t actually find any Democratic examples, but I’m sure there will be some eventually.”
[Maricopa County Sheriff Joe] Arpaio on Thursday unveiled preliminary results of an investigation, conducted by members of his volunteer task force, into the authenticity of President Obama’s birth certificate, a controversy driven by the so-called birther movement that has been widely debunked but which remains alive in the eyes of some conservatives.
At a news conference, Arpaio said the probe revealed that there was probable cause to believe Obama’s long-form birth certificate released by the White House in April is a computer-generated forgery. He also said the selective service card completed by Obama in 1980 in Hawaii also was most likely a forgery.
(…)
“I’m not going after Obama,” said Arpaio, who has criticized the president’s administration for cutting off his federal immigration powers and conducting a civil rights investigation of his office. “I’m just doing my job.”
And there you have it. He wouldn’t say it if it weren’t true, right?
