Barware: A Dog Tale

Welcome to Dog Tales, a series that looks into the lives of our favorite dogs and their favorite furniture. Today we’re excited to welcome, Ingrid, the St. Bernard who has made quite a name for herself as a bartender in the Swiss Alps. While Ingrid might seem like she’s tough and all business, she has a warm disposition that melts the hearts of each guest at her bar. Much like her ancestral St. Bernard’s, Ingrid has been saving hikers and skiers from the treacherous mountain tops with specialty cocktails served in signature barware. In our interview, Ingrid tells her story of how she and her bar became known all over Europe:

Ever since the Swiss Mountain Rescue Team started using helicopters to rescue skiers and hikers from St. Bernard Pass instead of St. Bernard’s, we St. Bernard’s have had to look for new occupations. One made a name for himself in the movie business. You may have heard of him – his name was Beethoven. For me, I decided to stay close to my whiskey roots and open up a bar in the Alps called The Bowl. I’ve been the owner and head bartender for the past eight years. In that time, The Bowl has become the number one bar in Europe to visit thanks to its setting in the Alps, its unique architecture, and last, but not least, because of my delicious cocktails.

At the bar, in order to accommodate our guests, we sell specialty drinks from around the world including Moscow mules, Old Fashioneds, margaritas, craft beers, world-class wines and champagne, martinis, and more. The back wall of the bar is lined with all the necessary barware for each of these drinks including copper mugs, whiskey tumblers, wine and beer glasses, champagne flutes, and martini glasses. Each is dusted with white around the rim to give the look of snow since we’re set high up in the snow-capped Swiss Alps. I thought that was kind of cheeky.

But by far, our most popular drink is one that was passed down from the St. Bernard’s of yester-year. It’s called the St. Bernard Warmer, and it tastes great on a cold day in the Alps. The backbone of the drink is, of course, whiskey and it’s served warm in a martini glass with foamed milk on top. The rest of the specialty ingredients I’m going to have to keep to myself. It’s been awarded the best cocktail in Europe for the last five years. We mix over 200 of these drinks each day and go through countless bottles of whiskey. If you come to The Bowl, you’ve got to try at least one. I’ll mix it for you myself!

Besides the St. Bernard Warmer, I’m also very proud of the unique bar setting we’ve created at The Bowl. The structure itself is shaped like a dog bowl and is suspended from a mountain side overlooking the beautiful valley below. The walls of The Bowl are all glass in order to give you panoramic views. The bar sits on the inside of the structure with and the backdrop behind the bartenders is covered in our frosted barware. The wall of glasses and mugs are arranged so that is looks as though you’re inside a glacier. It’s a spectacular place to enjoy a delicious beverage. I can’t wait to see next time you find yourself in the Swiss Alps. I’ll be the one pouring drinks behind the bar.
