NOVA: Earth From Space #pbs #nasa #satelliteimagery I've been a fan of NOVA for a long time but I have to say I am just blown away by the quality of this particular episode. On one hand it
almost conjures a spiritual moment (and I am an unapologetic atheist) to see the interconnectedness of everything placed on such graphic display. The diatomaceous dust of the Sahara is blown across the Atlantic to fertilize the Amazon. All life on this planet is dependent on Antarctica, which releases chilled brine as waters freeze to circulate along the oceans' floors over thousands of years, moderating the temperature of the seas and our atmosphere not unlike your radiator & cooling system does for your car. Stone that is hundreds of feet thick undulates as it stores then releases (looks like an animal's chest breathing) tons and tons of heavy gasses of vitally important sulfur and magnesium. Lightening slices molecules of air to release nitrates and starts fires all across the globe that break down organic material to free stagnant energy and nutrients to help fuel the cycle of life.
On the other hand however, watching this will make you very aware of your mortality and utter insignificance. You might find yourself asking ... um, yourself ...
Am I coal? Or perhaps in the best of worlds, rocket fuel? On a side note. If you are one of those people who think we should de-fund NASA and/or PBS, please uncircle me now. ;)
