"Longing for Orion"

Back in April I took some shots of Orion setting over Lake Clifton. There were a few shots I left to process later as other field trips came up, and soon I had forgotten these - lost in the depths of my hard drive.

I finally returned. This image was close to the end of my session at the lake. Orion is touching the horizon, and the atmosphere is starting to wash out the colours.

This image is a 3 x 3 panel mosaic through a 85mm lens using a modified Canon EOS6D. All camera and lens settings were kept the same for all panels. A tracking mount was used for the sky and turned off for the foreground panels. Stitching in PTGui, colour calibration in PixInsight, noise reduction, saturation and some brightness / contrast adjustment in Photoshop. Details below.

Enjoy, Will.

"From the Shore to Orion"

Its been a while, but finally I've made it back out under the night sky! This time to Lake Clifton, Western Australia, a popular spot for astrophotographers but somewhat cursed in that it sometimes gets a light fog during the night. Here over the tranquil lake the spectacular Orion constellation slowly descends towards the horizon that still glows from the sunset. The red arc of Barnard's Loop wraps around the Orion and Horsehead nebula, whilst the Rosette nebula shines brightly to the right.

This was a 5 x 5 panel mosaic through a 50mm lens using a modified Canon EOS6D. All camera and lens settings were kept the same for all panels. A tracking mount was used for the sky and turned off for the foreground panels. Stitching in PTGui, colour calibration in PixInsight, noise reduction, saturation and some brightness / contrast adjustment in Photoshop. Details below.

Enjoy, Will Vrbasso.

Orion A Molecular Cloud Complex

In this mosaic made from images taken by the VISTA infrared survey telescope at ESO’s Paranal Observatory in northern Chile in the near-infrared part of the spectrum you can see the Orion A molecular cloud, one of the two giant molecular clouds in the Orion molecular cloud complex (https://goo.gl/G0605a). It is located in the constellation of Orion (https://goo.gl/7fVJW0), about 1,350 light-years away from Earth.

Due to the images being taken in the near-infrared (https://goo.gl/6qVqkI) part of the spectrum you can see many young stars which would otherwise be hidden in the dense dust of the molecular cloud.

In the top part of the image you can see the famous Orion Nebula (M42, https://goo.gl/6uDnRD). The nebula is the closest large region of star formation (https://goo.gl/Mn2Zxf). It is of special interest because of its carbon chemistry, like other molecular clouds (https://goo.gl/dPyjMP) it contains an abundance of carbon-hydrogen positive ions (CH+).

Also visible in the image are pre-stellar discs, Herbig-Haro objects, star clusters and galaxy clusters lying far beyond our Milky Way Galaxy.
