"Carina over Lake Ballard"

Taken on Lake Ballard, Western Australia on 25/12/2017 - this image shows the signature hill that thrusts out from the dry salt lake, watched under the glow of the mighty Carina Nebula and the Southern Cross constellation. Lake Ballard is around 2 hours drive north of Kalgoorlie, with about 50km on a average dirt road (accessible by two wheel drive, which I did last year - but would recommend a 4x4).

On this night, the moon was at 40%, 20 deg elevation and descending therefore lighting up the foreground nicely - although at this brightness I had to back off alot on the exposure time to avoid whiting out the sky. Clouds were an issue as well, floating by occasionally. Fortunately, you can view this hill / lake from any angle so it was a matter of walking around such that the composition targeted a clear patch of sky.

This was a 22 panel mosaic but cropped to reveal closely the fantastic beauty of the Carina and Crux region of the sky. A tracking mount was used for the sky and turned off for the foreground. All camera and lens settings were kept the same for all panels. Stitching in PTGui, colour calibration, levels, saturation and contrast in Photoshop.

Enjoy, Will Vrbasso.

"The Great Carina Nebula" by Will Vrbasso (www.stellaraustralis.com)

My first session with my telescope for 2016 (and for a couple months), so I decided to pick an "easy" target (easy because it is bright and relatively simple to find and photograph). This image was taken from the dark skies of Namming Nature Reserve, Western Australia.

The Great Nebula in Carina is one of the largest diffuse nebulae in the night sky, and is four times larger and also brighter than the mighty Orion Nebula. Β It also contains the high luminous hyper-giant star Eta Carinae (100-150 times the mass of our Sun, and four million times as bright), the Homunculus nebula, the Keyhole nebula, and the Mystic Mountain (a dust-gas pillar made famous in a Hubble image).

This image was a quick stack of only 8 images with an unmodified Canon EOS6D through a Skywatcher 120mm apo telescope. I would've like to do more, but I had the moon rising and I needed to be quick.

Enjoy, Will.

PS: all my images are available to download on my website at www.stellaraustralis.com.

"The Last Atreides"

Taken on the dunes near Lancelin, Western Australia on 23/12/2017 - this image shows the quiet landscape with the summer night sky ascending from the eastern horizon. Many deepsky jewels of the night sky are revealed here with the help of a modified DSLR camera. On the left are the Pleides and California nebula, then heading to the right are the Orion nebula and famous Horsehead nebula, the Rosetta nebula, while the Vela supernova remnants and the bright Carina nebula are on right hand side where I am standing.

Alas, when I was taking the bottom right pane of this mosiac, a car's headlights lit up the sky and the dunes (why it looks like the sun is rising on the bottom right horizon - its just the cars high beam lights). Annoying - the colours bottom right are all washed out because of it. Oh well...

This is a 30 panel mosiac, with a tracking mount for the sky and turned off for the foreground, all camera and lens settings were kept the same for all panels. Stitching in PTGui, colour calibration and some stretching with Pixinsight, levels, saturation and contrast in Photoshop.

Enjoy, Will Vrbasso.

"Falling from Heaven - Redux" by Will Vrbasso (www.stellaraustralis.com)

This image spans the core of our Milkyway galaxy (left) to the Rho Ophiuchi / Antares cloud complex (right) which appears like a multi starred comet trailing smoke as it seemingly flies from the bright center . This region of the night sky is a favourite of many astrophotographers (and me) due to its bright and dynamic features and wonderful colours that can be captured relatively easily with the right equipment.

This image is a stitched panel of 3 taken with a modified Canon EOS6D back in May 2017, but was processed somewhat in a rush. Using PixInsight I've re-processed it to improve the colour balance which was shockingly out in the original post.

Enjoy, Will.

"Core Rising over Wongan Hills" by Will Vrbasso (www.stellaraustralis.com)

Wongan Hills is located in the wheatbelt region of Western Australia and around 2 hours drive from Perth. I took this image from the local look-out situated on the hills not too far from the main town (which is the bright glow centre right in image on the horizon). The town, not suprisingly, is called Wongan Hills. There was a little bit of smoke / smog from nearby fires that can be seen on the horizon, causing some of the orange glow.

I had originially came to this area to take photos around Lake Ninan. However, exploring the area I was somewhat disappointed that the water had receded very far, and I couldn't find a composition that took my fancy, apart from a general uninspiring panorama of a partly dry lake which I've done many times before. So in the end I decided to go to the look-out and take one from there then head home. Well, you can't have great nights every night.

Enjoy, Will.

"Guarding a Reef of Stars" by +Will Vrbasso ....

The Milkyway Core is descending over Gilderton Lighthouse, Western Australia. Rather than a sweeping pano, I used a longer focal length 85mm and a vantage point more distant to the subject in order to create a more 'dramatic' affect of a small lighthouse against the large backdrop of the core. Antares and Rho Ophicuhi can be seen just to the left of the lighthouse, and to the right a cloud front is approaching (which unfortunately cut my session short - I was hoping to get the galaxy when it was lower to the horizon).

This is a 2 x 8 panel mosiac, with a tracking mount for the sky and turned off for the foreground, all camera settings were kept the same for all panels. Stitching in PTGui, colour calibration with Pixinsight, levels, saturation and contrast in Photoshop.

Enjoy, Will Vrbasso.

"Gilderton Lighthouse" by +Will Vrbasso .....

Last one of Gilderton Lighthouse, Western Australia. This was early on in the night, with the shot looking southward and the Milkyway just tipping over and beginning its descent to the western horizon.

This is a 4 x 9 panel mosiac, with a tracking mount for the sky and turned off for the foreground, all camera settings were kept the same for all panels. Stitching in PTGui, colour calibration with Pixinsight, levels, saturation and contrast in Photoshop.

Enjoy, Will Vrbasso.

- - "Core Horizon" β™₯
By Will Vrbasso http://www.stellaraustralis.com
With the core rising before the night sky has fully darkened, and ghastly cyan lights producing glare over the horizon to the right, this image of the Milkyway rising over the Gingin horizon, Western Australia, was always going to take a bit of effort to produce anything presentable. In the end, it looks a bit over processed - but the original shots were very washed out with skyglow and light pollution so I'm glad I got some result.

However, I love taking more dramatic close-ups of the Milkyway - this one being a stitch of 15 images through an Canon 85mm lens.

"The Ancient Wetland Forest"

Near to the town of Denmark, Western Australia lies an ancient wetland of paperbark trees. This hidden sanctuary occasionally fills with water during the winter months, as is seen in this recent picture.

This is a 6 panel mosaic, with each panel a set of three images combined as an HDR in Photomatix and stitched using PTGui.

Enjoy, Will Vrbasso.

"Twilight over Greens Pool"

Near Denmark, Western Australia is located Williams Bay. In this bay behind a line of rocks lies Greens Pool - a favourite local swimming spot due to the calmer waters. After sunset, I had this fantastic vista all to myself.

This is a 5 panel mosaic, stitched using PTGui and processed in Photoshop.

Enjoy, Will Vrbasso.
