Erupting Solar Flare taken by Solar Dynamics Observatory -- SDO is a NASA mission which has been observing the Sun since 2010. Launched on February 11, 2010, the observatory is part of the Living With a Star (LWS) program designed to understand the causes of solar variability and its impacts on Earth. SDO is designed to help us understand the Sun's influence on Earth and Near-Earth space by studying the solar atmosphere on small scales of space and time and in many wavelengths simultaneously.

Turning Point: Solar That's Cheaper Than Wind
(http://gplnk.co/2hSGqUu)

Unsubsidized #solarpower is beginning to outcompete coal and natural gas and is finally starting to fall less than #windpower.

China has been rapidly deploying solar, making it more accessible to everyone. Private companies have been competing for the cheap solar power, and renewables are undercutting fossil fuel prices.

In wealthier nations, it's been more difficult to shift to clean energy, as electricity demand is flat or falling, and there are new billion-dollar coal and gas plants.

The buildup of wind and solar takes time, and fossil fuels are still cheaper when the wind is still, and it's darker. Fossil fuels will still be a factor for many years to come, and these fossil fuels keep people in work, even though it's bad for the environment.

But for the areas where fossil fuels are problematic, the shift to renewable energy can't come soon enough.

Are you ready to go solar in the midst of an economy where we're moving toward renewable? Contact us today! http://gplnk.co/2hwEXTF

Solar Storm Watch: Northern Lights will put on a spectacular display on Christmas Northern Lights
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ky_HibDAj_A

#Solar #Storm #Aurora #Watch #Northern #Lights

Earth is about to enter a solar wind stream that could spark polar auroras from Dec. 20th through 25th. Geomagnetic storming is most likely on Dec. 21st and 22nd with peak storm levels near G2. Sky watchers around the Arctic Circle should be alert for Northern Lights.

The source of the solar wind is a gigantic hole in the sun's atmosphere, now directly facing Earth. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory caught the structure, which covers nearly 1/3rd of the solar disk.

'Weakest Solar Cycle in more than a Century' Two Large Coronal Holes / Spotless Sun
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmnVBSr7K3U

#Solar #Cycle #Spotless #Sun #Coronal #Holes

The current solar cycle is the 24th since 1755 when extensive recording of solar sunspot activity began and is the weakest in more than a century with the fewest sunspots since cycle 14 peaked in February 1906. The next solar minimum phase is expected to take place around 2019 or 2020.

Solar cycle 24
We are currently more than seven years into Solar Cycle 24 and it appears the solar maximum of this cycle was reached in April 2014 during a spike in activity. Going back to 1755, there have been only a few solar cycles in the previous 23 that have had a lower number of sunspots during its maximum phase.
Once again the sun has gone completely blank. The current solar cycle is the 24th since 1755 when extensive recording of solar sunspot activity began and is the...

The solar radiation that reaches the Earth has been used by humans since antiquity, using different technologies that have evolved. At present, the heat and light of the Sun can be used by means of various sensors such as photovoltaic cells, heliostats or thermal collectors, and can be transformed into electrical or thermal energy.#oscarps

Abandoned For 20 Years, Former Farm Grows Solar Power Now -- And It's Dirt Cheap

In what is being billed as a record low price for utility-scale solar power in California, the new 155 megawatt Springbok 2 solar farm is now operational and cranking out the juice at $58.00 per megawatt-hour, slightly less than its previously anticipated rate of $58.65. According to the developer, 8minuteenergy, that beats fossil fuel for

Solar power cost down 25% in five months – “There’s no reason why the cost of solar will ever increase again”

On August 11 a bid of US$0.46/W was put forward to build 500MW of solar power in China (a roughly calculated levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) at $0.019/kWh). This past week we saw a bid of $0.0…

Then I guess we will just have to wait to see how the economics all plays out. If nuclear power is considered to be cost effective and competitive on a EROEI basis, including decommissioning costs and potential environmental liability, we will see more of them. If not, we won't. The insurance industry won't touch them, and the banks won't lend the construction funding without a very low probability of default.

#Solar panels require to be periodically checked for defects from overheating. The overheated panels show reduced performance. The defective panels are replaced. Work teams are traditionally deployed to periodically physically check each panel in a solar farm. A scaffolding is erected around a panel set to enable inspection. This is a cumbersome, time consuming process. The inspection work could take weeks to complete in a large solar farm.
