Let's face it, nobody wants to get a traffic ticket ... and nobody wants that ticket to result in an increased auto insurance rate. But, it can happen. The best way to keep your rates low is to avoid getting the tickets in the first place.
Here are 4 of the costliest mistakes you can make when it comes to getting a traffic ticket and your auto insurance:
1) Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
While your auto insurance company might give you a pass on some traffic tickets, don't count on it if you are caught drunk driving. Expect your rates to double.
2) Reckless Driving
Not quite as bad as a DUI, but still pretty bad. In Pennsylvania, you can be charged with reckless driving if you drive a vehicle "in careless disregard for the safety of persons or property".
3) Speeding
Just because you are caught speeding does not necessarily mean your auto insurance rates will increase; however, if you get enough of them, you can bet that your insurance will increase or even be canceled.
4) Running a Red Light
Failing to stop at red lights is dangerous and causes accidents. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, crashes that involved running a red light resulted in an estimated 133,000 injuries in 2012 and 683 fatalities, about half of which were pedestrians, bicyclists, and automobile passengers.
