More Good Reviews For The Apple Watch Series 2
The consensus? The new Apple Watch makes a far better case for smartwatch ownership than the first one, to say nothing of the army of pointless Android watches.

As more reviews of the Apple Watch Series 2 come out, the more I really rather want one. I stress want, which isn't surprising, since I'm a flaming geek. But the non-geek in me is actually interested! That's a big deal. Practically, I don't think I will ever need a smart watch, but since the geeky drive to own one is so strong, the use case argument that the product makes for itself only needs to be kinda' strong.

I am speaking generally, of course, since I will never buy into the Apple ecosystem. I appreciate what is attractive about it, and the iPhone is a fantastic product, but as I said, I'm a geek. I'm hardcore enough to be building my own Linux installs. The closed, controlled world of Apple is simply incompatible with those predilections.

But Android has made a good business out of following Apple's lead, and I hope that an Android manufacturer makes as compelling a product at some point in the future. Maybe even Google themselves.

And also, I wonder about Microsoft's plans. Android has failed to capture the smartwatch market because there's WAY too much fragmentation. For a market as small as smartwatches, developers will need a standardized target to ensure profitability. And smartwatches are only as good as their apps. It's a chicken and egg problem that demands a powerful, organizing force to drive a singular vision of how things are to work.

With Microsoft rumored to be ditching the Band, I can only assume they have plans to replace it with something else, perhaps something more powerful. With a paradigm that is less mobile-focused, like Google and Apple, Microsoft may create a watch that interfaces with a LAN, or perhaps nearby computers as opposed to only a cell phone. This different perspective could be exciting.

But that's all speculation. For now, I want the Apple Watch. I won't buy one, but I want one, which is a lot more than yesterday.

According to the Financial Times, Apple has approached McLaren Technology Group about a potential acquisition. The Financial Times mentions that Apple is considering between a full takeover of McLaren or a strategic investment. Regardless, an acquisition of McLaren could help accelerate Apple's secret self-driving electric car project. If Apple's self-driving car does make it to market, don't expect it to be cheap. McLaren produces luxury sports cars that can cost as much as $1 million apiece.
