Exciting news of the planned restoration of the al-Nuri Mosque: built in 1172 by a celebrated crusader-fighter, & boasting a bent minaret that was long the definitive landmark. ISIS - inevitably - blew it up (even though al-Baghdadi had been proclaimed caliph there).

Before & after: pictures shown to me by the head of the library of University. The library lost a million books, the oldest dating back to the 13th century.

Another Quaker, Mary Fisher, similarly confronted the Ottoman sultan, Mehmet IV - who was similarly patient. "He was very noble unto me," Fisher recalled.

"Thou hast chosen the glory of this world, and art as a stinking dunghill in the sight of God" - Mary Howgill, in a letter to Oliver Cromwell, which she delivered personally to him in Whitehall Palace, "about 10 o'clock at night." Cromwell patiently heard her out.

At Highworth, 6 miles outside Swindon, the ghost of the local squire was notorious for roaming the streets with a rope round his neck. When exorcised, the ghost said he would only submit if he were allowed to be sealed up in a vat of cider. And so he was.

Wiltshire isn't just beautiful countryside, ancient monuments & sleepy villages. Fans of complicated road systems will thrill to Swindon's 'Magic Roundabout' – the only roundabout in the whole of Britain to have been the theme of a song by XTC

What really makes this story is what it reveals about both John and Paul's devotion to the *music* above all else. John hates the song, Paul hates deferring to John, but in the end getting the song right – even *that* song – comes first for both of them.
