Of course he's back at work at 0615, and will be every day 'til the end of Feb. SecDef Mattis is an honorable public servant, who will work hard to protect us every day of his final two months in office.

In response to assertions that Trump's w/drawal in Syria is just like Obama's in Iraq in 2011, I wrote this for Just Security: False Comparisons: Obama’s Military Withdrawal from Iraq and Trump’s Syria Disengagement via

No. From the piece you posted: "Officials said publicly the decision for him to leave was mutual but privately others said he was forced out. “There’s no question he was fired,” said one source with knowledge of the matter."

I'm no fan of Sen. McConnell but this an outrageous thing to say; for a WH press spokesperson to say these words, it should be a firing offense. But it won't be.

I don't dispute that we failed to secure agreement on the residual force. The piece rebuts the notion that Pres. Trump's decision to withdraw from Syria, and the resulting abandonment of the SDF and our Defeat-ISIS partners, is comparable to the Obama-Biden policy on Iraq.

There is a simpler explanation. Dems believe in govt. Many Rs do not. Closing the government is not a comfortable place for Dems to be.

Except that it's hard to remember a SecDef resigning because of a policy/values disagreements. Carter served to the end. Hagel was pushed out. Panetta left b/c he decided it was time after 4 yrs combined at CIA & DoD.

John Bolton likes to say that Repubs are the 'adults' on foreign policy. Adults don't make major military decisions without hearing from the Chairman of the Jt Chiefs, or surprise allies with a tweet.

As I understand it, Republicans unanimously think Mattis an excellent defense secretary and wise on foreign policy. Mattis's resignation letter makes clear he thinks Trump a terrible president who's dead wrong on foreign policy. So...

I’ve had disagreements with Secretary Mattis, but we shared the view — long-held by Democrats and Republicans in this nation — that respect for our allies and a commitment to the most important and effective alliances in history made America safer.

Trump misjudged Mattis, to the end. Thought he could fool the country that it was a decision to retire, not a resignation over policy differences. Not surprising, b/c POTUS doesn't understand the concept of honor.

I think his resignation letter tells us the last straw was the Syria decision. Betraying coalition partners and the SDF violates Mattis's sense of honor.
