Example of wasteful govn't spending. Lame Duck just passed 1.3 billion in spending. 114 billon to roads, 115 billon to spending in districts. I know money went to a zoo and for a river boat. will be handcuffed by these costs.

For that matter, I JUST indulged more of the linguistic nonsense here, by invoking the word "qualified" without further explanation.. lol AA was about expanding the notion of "qualification" in a way that fought against biases that kept people of color out.

It says everything about the way we are losing the war around the ways we talk about race, racism and inequality that people are quickly identifying THIS crazy story with affirmative action.

Indeed, this is the very thing affirmative action is falsely accused of being: an unearned advantage, based on some non-merit-based criteria. AFfirmative action only ever endeavored to remove the bias that held QUALIFIED applicants of color back.

We aren't our own worst enemy. Oppression is. But damn. We've got to think more carefully about things like this. They represent political opportunities and we have to treat them as such.

I can point back to people fighting in 1977 and in 1969 (the year I was born). They sought to EXPAND the populations college served. When they took Michigan over they did so at great risk. For kids they would never meet. That ain't this.

As an aside STOP calling this "affirmative action for whites". Hell, stop calling supposedly LEGITIMATE uses of wealth "affirmative action for whites." College based affirmative action comes from a political struggle to expand college admissions. That ain't this.

A scandal about wealthy people paying for their children to get fake high scores on admissions tests distracts us from the (far more serious but less viscerally wrong) social problem of wealthy people paying for their children to get actual high scores.

Who’s still unsure that we need serious reckoning with notions of privilege, access, opportunity and wealth in this country? I’d take some solace if I thought these arrests, or even prison terms, would make a systemic diff. Jiminy.

Hamtramck Stadium 10. mar.
From 1919–1929, the Stars played their home games at Mack Park, located at Mack and Fairview on Detroit’s east side. A fire in 1929 destroyed much of Mack Park, which led to the construction of Stadium in 1930.

Colonial newspapers contributed to the perpetuation of slavery. Advertised 250 years ago today: “With this farm will be sold, bout THIRTY LIKELY NEGROES... 17 of them are fit for field or boat work, and the rest fine thriving children." (Georgia Gazette 3/8/1769)
