Beef farming is seeing similar problems with only the top 1/3 making money inclusive of direct supports from the EU If consumers want Irish products a big change is needed or we will be eating Brazilian beef grown cheaply and untraceably where once pristine rainforest grew.

I know when the milk boom started a lady in AIB over farm loans was told by branch manager to get as much money out and as many farm deeds in as was possible Some of the successful business plans she told me of were laughable.

Eternal optimism and a love of farming, for non farmers that’s hard to understand but it’s a thing.

Milk and beef processors are abusing their monopoly position to suppress farm incomes to a position where they are just clinging on to keep supplying but not making any actual significant returns on investments or hours worked.

Yep, 1995 prices. Think about how that affects a business.

Reliable 😱 I’d need to check but milk price is at 1995 levels. Think about how much fertiliser, diesel, esb, equipment, insurance and pretty much everything has increased by. Would you like to try and get by on your wages from 1995 ? How many consumers would ?

The supermarkets are dumbing down consumers by pretending they have the consumers best needs at heart. Truth is they are money making soulless conglomerates bad for consumers and producers. It’s at a stage where we need a fair trade scheme for irish farms.

Doesn’t the GLAS scheme call for cutting these hedges ? GLAS is supposed to be our environmentally friendly scheme, it doesn’t make sense.

Many advantages over traditional timber, no rotting would be obvious.

Absolutely. I know allot of farmers are worried about public perception of veal production but it’s a sensible move considering the calf numbers available.

This isn’t a farmer, farmers don’t abuse their livestock like this. This is a worker and thankfully he has been held accountable for this savagery.

Youngest girl, 10, makes her own version of Eaton mess. Makes her own meringue from eggs from her own chickens. She does savage buns, cookies and loads of stuff that’s nice but hard on the wasteline.

No, I said it was too many calves. We should develop a veal industry here and stop live shipping calves completely. It’s an extremist vegan behaviour to use human terms for animals to increase emotional impact of statement, it’s inappropriate and incorrect.

Far too many CALVES to be live exported, they’re not babies, that’s a human term.

We must look at veal rearing systems here in Ireland. It avoids this live shipping and bonus we add value to the product before export. It’s no good to say ban it without looking at what the alternative will be.

Veganism is being corrupted by big corporations to eat this hyper processed muck. It’s anything but healthy and far from environmentally friendly. They are being set up as a cash cow for big business and don’t see it coming. Imitation everything just to get their money.
