Novell set this week as the deadline for acquisition offers, according to the
Wall Street Journal followed by the New York Times.
Elliott Associates LLP spokesman Scott Tagliarino claims Elliott, whose
$5.75-a-share offer put Novell in play a couple of months ago, knows nothing
about Novell's schedule. "It's running its own show," he said. Elliott's
offer is still on the table.
Novell refused the hedge fund's unsolicited bid as too low but since the
offer inflated Novell's sunken stock price the company knew it was trapped
and went looking for a sweeter deal.
The Journal reports being told by "people familiar with the matter" that 20
companies have expressed interest of some kind in Novell, but that any
serious offers are all expected to come from private equity firms and top
Elliott's $2 billion bid. How much more Novell could possibly be worth is the
question.

Enterprises large and small are drawn by the advantages of cloud computing --
pay-for-use, self-service, elastic scalability and the elimination of
hardware management – resulting in very low barriers to entry and exit and
high agility. However, enterprises are also concerned about security, quality
of service, integration, compliance, lock-in, and the long-term costs of
public clouds.
Private clouds for the exclusive use of one enterprise can however mitigate
these concerns by giving the enterprise greater control. In a keynote address

Thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), our world is more automated and connected than ever before. Just about everything, from cars to refrigerators, to coffee machines, has the ability to connect to the Internet, allowing us to micromanage each individual device. This type of automation is an exciting direction for the world to be moving in and the benefits it brings to businesses are huge.
Thanks to its many business benefits, cloud computing is becoming commonplace within organizations of all sizes. Historically, companies have struggled to determine which model – public or private – best met their needs. But of late, IT professionals are increasingly starting to realize that both public and private clouds can exist harmoniously within the same organization, and that, in many instances, a hybrid cloud model can actually be the most effective approach. 
During 2016 cloud computing celebrated its tenth anniversary. Therefore, at the beginning of 2017, we’ll briefly look at what the next decade may bring. Also this brings to a close the version of Tune into the Cloud that was published monthly in the Dutch print publication Cloudworks, the magazine where we started this series.

Chat apps characteristics make them very appealing to businesses and marketers. Prominent ones include their size, user retention, usage rates, and user demographics. In fact, the combined user base of the top four chat apps is larger than that of the top four social networks. Chat apps also have higher retention and usage rates than most mobile apps. Finally, the majority of their users are young, an extremely important demographic for brands, advertisers and publishers.

Cyberthreats have become more sophisticated over the years, improving methods to take advantage of software information and even completely shut down systems to hold data ransom. As a result, developers and testers must be able to ensure that their programs have the necessary protections in place to prevent attacks and keep business information safe. Here are a few tips to help teams address security measures during testing.
Whenever you connect anything to the internet, there is risk involved. Just ask the millions of IoT zombies infected with Mirai. Sure, there have been various stories over the years about hacking thermostats, refrigerators, cameras, pacemakers, insulin pumps and other medical devices along with cars, homes and hotel rooms…but Mirai took it to a new level.
Cloud computing is here to stay. The agility and scalability of the cloud model – as well as its ability to transform up-front capital expenditures into flexible operating expenditures – are too compelling to ignore. For CIOs in organizations of all sizes, the question is no longer whether to take advantage of the cloud … but how. Unfortunately, that question isn't as easy to answer as it might sound. Not all cloud providers are created equal. Different vendors offer different features, terms and service levels. And once you engage with one vendor, it can be difficult to change your mind down...
The first thing you need to know about blockchain is that it enables the creation of virtual currencies and intelligent contracts. At its core is the concept of a “distributed ledger,” where data on transactions is recorded across a range of specified databases. Every transaction can be tracked and replicated in real time. That’s how the identities of user accounts, even if they are anonymous, can be verified and secured behind advanced cryptography and digital signatures.
Software-defined infrastructure (SDI) is one of the most popular and ongoing trends within datacenters and cloud environments leading to better infrastructure flexibility by developing the infrastructure based on scripts respectively source code. However, SDIs are more and more becoming just a means to an end since automation, sophisticated algorithms and thus intelligent systems are leading to an Artificial Intelligence defined Infrastructure (AI-defined Infrastructure – AiDI).
Recently an analysis was completed by SmartBear to gauge the sense of what software professionals believe is the core value provided by API virtualization. It was concluded that software professionals, including developers, testers, managers and architects believe that the biggest benefit of virtualization is that it brings teams together by allowing them to collaborate. In total, 18% more respondents indicated that virtualization has more value in uniting teams than it has in adding speed to delivery or reducing costs.
I work from Boston 4 days a week and we're in the middle of a blizzard. (Note: I commute to Boston. I live 4 days a week at Unitrends' Boston/Burlington offices and 3 days a week at Unitrends' Columbia South Carolina offices. So it's fair to note that given my South Carolina roots that a single snowflake could cause a massive panic attack. Nevertheless, I think Winter storm Niko is a fairly big deal even to folks who have lived their whole lives in the Northeast.) My son Max is home from college and that always leads to some interesting conversations. Max is in graduate school at Iowa State University where he is studying kinesiology and strength training. However, users continue to face challenges in implementing clouds, as older technologies evolve and newer ones like Docker containers gain prominence. I recently read an MIT Sloan Management Review article by Clayton Christensen’s recent book titled “The Hard Truth About Business Model Innovations.” While the article is full of great observations about business model transformation, the most important motivation for business model transformation is found at the end: “..our understanding of the business model journey allows us to see that, over the long term, the greatest innovation risk a company can take is to decide not to create new businesses that decouple the company’s future from that of its current business units.”
