The Importance of Monitoring Containers
By Kevin Goldberg
With the rise of Docker, Kubernetes, and other container technologies, the
growth of microservices has skyrocketed among dev teams looking to innovate
on a faster release cycle. This has enabled teams to finally realize their
DevOps goals to ship and iterate quickly in a continuous delivery model. Why
containers are growing in popularity is no surprise — they’re extremely
easy to spin up or down, but come with an unforeseen issue.
However, without the right foresight, DevOps and IT teams may lose a lot of
visibility into these containers resulting in operational blind spots and
even more haystacks to find the presumptive performance issue needle.
If your team is looking towards containers and microservices as an
operational change in how you decide to ship your product, you can’t afford
bugs or software issue... (more)

Accelerating Transformation Projects with Dynamic, Software-Defined Storage
Organizations planning enterprise data center consolidation and modernization
projects are faced with a challenging, costly reality. Requirements to deploy
modern, cloud-native applications simultaneously with traditional
client/server applications are almost impossible to achieve with
hardware-centric enterprise infrastructure. Compute and network
infrastructure are fast moving down a software-defined path, but storage has
been a laggard. Until now.

The OpenNebula Project has just announced the Beta release of vOneCloud, a
CentOS Linux virtual appliance for vSphere that contains all required
OpenNebula services optimized to work on existing VMware vCenter deployments.
vOneCloud is for companies that want to create a self-service cloud
environment on top of their VMware infrastructure without having to abandon
their investment in VMware and retool the entire stack. vOneCloud deploys an
enterprise-ready OpenNebula cloud just in a few minutes where the
infrastructure is managed by already familiar VMware tools, such as vSphere
and vCenter Operations Manager, and the provisioning, elasticity and
multi-tenancy cloud features are offered by OpenNebula.
vOneCloud is the answer to those companies looking for alternatives to
VMware vCloud. They usually report that:
vCloud is not an easy to use solution vCloud is mostly ... (more)
Python: Beyond Just Web Apps
By Omed Habib
Python has long been a go-to language for developers creating cutting-edge
web applications. However, Python’s advantages of power, versatility,
flexibility and ease of programming have made it a favorite language in a
multitude of applications, industries, and niches.
Examples of Python being used outside the world of Web apps include:
The development of an ERP/CRM named ERP5, developed by Nexedi for use in
government agencies, the apparel industry, and other warehouse-based
businesses.
A self-contained marine navigation light from Carmanah Technologies. This is
a good example of how Python is helping to power the move away from dedicated
computers to the new era of the Internet of Things.
Substantial portions of the semiconductor facility at the Phillips
manufacturing plant in Fishkill, New York are run on Python.

The speed of product development has increased massively in the past 10
years. At the same time our formal secure development and SDL methodologies
have fallen behind. This forces product developers to choose between rapid
release times and security.
In his session at DevOps Summit, Michael Murray, Director of Cyber Security

present some solutions for moving security in to the DevOps lifecycle to
ensure that we get fast AND secure.

Server-side JavaScript (SSJS) is growing in popularity fast since developers
realize it can drastically simplify Web app creation by letting you use using
the same technology stack on both the client and the server. While
server-side JavaScript is not new - it was a part of Netscape’s vision
10 years ago - times have significantly changed with 10x faster hardware and
networks, making that original vision for the Web now a reality.
This Fall at the 6th International AJAXWorld RIA Conference & Expo (October
20-22, 2008) in San Jose, CA, Ian Selby will be giving a session that no
developer who uses JavaScript or ActionScript will want to miss.
In this session delegates will learn how to: Overcome common hurdles and
pitfalls of client-side only JavaScript development. Speed up development
time by cutting out extra server-side code and processing scripts that are no

Open source software, while not synonymous with Java, may often be seamlessly
integrated with Java code to produce a versatile synthesis that makes
developers’ lives much easier. In recent years, developers have taken some
open source dynamic languages, commonly referred to as “scripting
languages,” and adapted them to the more mainstream Java platform. This
allows the new hybrid language to maintain its scripting qualities, while
being fully utilized by a Java program. Three of the most prominent open
source/Java languages are JRuby, a Java implementation of Ruby; Jython, a
Java implementation of Python; and Groovy, an object-oriented programming
language for the Java platform.
JRuby, Jython, and Groovy
Before I go into my thoughts on JRuby, Jython or Groovy, let me provide a
quick background on myself. I have been using Java since 1996 (it was first

The blurring of professional and personal lives in social media and the rush
of organizations to “join in” may create just that.
Almost every modern organization has behavioral policies known as
“zero-tolerance” these days. These policies are designed to provide a
healthy, productive environment in which anyone can work without fear of
being insulted, offended, harassed, or otherwise made uncomfortable on a day
to day basis.
Basically, “zero-tolerance” policies are - in part - the codification of
the common-sense rule that says you don’t talk about religion, politics, or
sex in the work environment. Controversial topics, jokes, images, and words
are off-limits even at the water-cooler for anyone who truly endeavors to
have a successful professional career and, in many cases, enjoy continued
employment.
But when that water cooler goes digital, organizational policie... (more)
Selenium is a free Web Application Testing System. It gained lots of
popularity since it is available. It’s integration to FireFox – which
allows instant record/replay as well as the scripting option - makes it a
great tool for functional web testing.
BrowserMob on the other side leverages Selenium by providing an automated
load-testing environment for Selenium scripts all configurable online via a
Web Dashboard.
Tagging Web Requests
In my recent blog post – Get more out of functional web testing: How to
correlate test reports with server side log information? – I discussed the
problem that testing results are usually not linked to the log and
diagnostics information captured by the application under test. The blog
entry offered a way to link the two sides using HTTP Tagging via an HTTP
Proxy. Tagging individual Web Requests allows linking each individual request

Cloud Computing on Ulitzer
Steve (apparently yes, we are on a first name basis) offers up his thoughts
on developing APIs for the Cloud in “A Cloud Tools Manifesto.” While the
inclusion of the word “manifesto” in the title raised quite the stir
(“Manifestogate” is still fresh on the minds of many cloud-oriented
people), what really caught my eye is his inclusion of a “mock endpoint”
primarily for testing of API based integration and development. This is
something that’s increasingly important not just to cloud but to Web 2.0
and social networking sites that provide APIs via which other sites and
client applications can access the functionality and data unique to that
application.
A “mock endpoint” for testing provides developers with a way to test
their client / integration code without affecting the actual system. This is
very similar to synthetic transactions us... (more)
