2019 Eclipse View from La Silla: Artist’s impression
This artist’s impression shows how the total solar eclipse of July 2, 2019 will appear from ESO’s La Silla Observatory in Chile. The sun will be quite low in the western sky and, if the skies are clear, several planets and bright stars should be also visible.

The Dark Side of The Earth | ESO
This animation shows the Moon passing between the Earth and Sun on a typical orbital cycle. The inclined orbit of the Moon means that a solar eclipse, let alone a total solar eclipse, does not happen every month.

When a solar eclipse does occur, the Moon blocks the Sun from the point-of-view of the Earth and casts its shadow on the surface of the Earth below. On July 2, 2019, a total solar eclipse will take place over South America. ESO's La Silla Observatory is situated within the path of totality.

July 2, 2019 Total Solar Eclipse: Artist's impression
This video is an artist's impression of the total solar eclipse at ESO's La Silla Observatory on July 2, 2019. During this eclipse, the Sun will be low in the sky, so the shadow will form a u-shape in the sky.

ESO will open the doors of the La Silla Observatory for this very rare event.

Shadow of the Moon | ESO
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. As the Moon blocks the Sun's light it casts a shadow onto the surface of the Earth. In this video, the shadow of the Moon can be seen moving over the Earth's surface during the total solar eclipse of July 2019.
