M16 - The Eagle Nebula in SHO Hubble Palette

A couple of nights ago, after my main imaging session, I got some spare time so I decided to run a quick imaging session before the clouds were all over the sky.

The Eagle Nebula was about 55 degrees above the horizon so it looked like a perfect target.

Even though I didn't have much time to capture the OIII + SII data, still, it added a nice depth to the details and colours, especially in the centre of the image where the Hubble's Pillars of Creation are.

--

The Eagle Nebula, also known as M16 and NGC 6611, is a type of interstellar gas and dust cloud called an emission nebula, or HII region, and is a place where new stars are forming. Stars heat and ionise the nebula's hydrogen gas, lighting it from within.

The Eagle Nebula is the subject of a famous Hubble Space Telescope photograph 'Pillars of Creation' (left), which shows a part of the Eagle where new stars are forming. The tallest pillar is about four light years long.

The Dark Side of The Earth | ESO
This animation shows the Moon passing between the Earth and Sun on a typical orbital cycle. The inclined orbit of the Moon means that a solar eclipse, let alone a total solar eclipse, does not happen every month.

When a solar eclipse does occur, the Moon blocks the Sun from the point-of-view of the Earth and casts its shadow on the surface of the Earth below. On July 2, 2019, a total solar eclipse will take place over South America. ESO's La Silla Observatory is situated within the path of totality.

Shadow of the Moon | ESO
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. As the Moon blocks the Sun's light it casts a shadow onto the surface of the Earth. In this video, the shadow of the Moon can be seen moving over the Earth's surface during the total solar eclipse of July 2019.

July 2, 2019 Total Solar Eclipse: Artist's impression
This video is an artist's impression of the total solar eclipse at ESO's La Silla Observatory on July 2, 2019. During this eclipse, the Sun will be low in the sky, so the shadow will form a u-shape in the sky.

ESO will open the doors of the La Silla Observatory for this very rare event.
