HTC is getting 2017 off to a flying start with its flagship phone: the U Ultra and U Play.

There’s a Snapdragon 821 at the heart of this new smartphone, along with 4GB of RAM, and a choice of 64GB or 128GB of storage. it comes with microSD card slot for expansion by up to 2TB of extra storage. The camera has been upgraded with the addition of phase-detect autofocus with 12-megapixel UltraPixel shooter including an f/1.8 aperture, and optical image stabilization.
The front camera of the U Ultra scales to a higher resolution of 16 megapixels. The 3,000mAh battery may be a little on the small side for the U Ultra’s large display, and the same can be said of the 2,500mAh battery of the U Play.
The U Play comes with Helio P10 processor from MediaTek, halves the storage offerings to 32GB or 64GB, and uses a 16-megapixel rear camera with smaller pixels than on the Ultra model. U Play will begin shipping with Android Marshmallow on board while U Ultra with Nougat.

These comes with AI enhancements that are basically the phone predicting what you’ll want to do and serving up helpful suggestions.

The HTC U Ultra with 64GB of storage goes on pre-sale today for $749 from HTC.com in a choice of either blue, black, white, or pink. The U Play will follow later this spring, though there’s no hard indication about its price.

As noted by Android Police, leaked images of a HTC's new device codenamed “Ocean Blue” show off a phone with glass covering both the front and back with an aluminum frame sandwiched in the middle.

There’s a secondary display at the top right, just like on the LG V10/V20. According to the photos, its functionality will include app shortcuts, the weather, and an always-on display mode with the date, time, and a battery indicator. Around back is a rounded square-shaped camera, which feels very Samsung when combined with the glass — despite HTC having used this design previously on the M9. Up top is the SIM card try and a mic, on the side is a textured power button and volume toggle, and there’s a USB-C port on bottom. It’ll come in at least three colors: black, dark blue, and two others.

Today's #AndroidDev #Protip on text appearance and theme attributes is by +Katherine Kuan, the newest member of Android Developer Relations (welcome, Katherine!)

When choosing font sizes for your app, using too many different sizes can be visually distracting and confuse the user as to what information is important. To be consistent with other apps on the platform, you can use the standard set of type sizes provided by the framework: small, medium, or large.

To use a standard text size (and color), instead of setting the TextView's android:textSize directly, set the android:textAppearance to a predefined theme attribute [1] such as android:textAppearanceLarge:

<TextView
    …
    android:textAppearance="?android:textAppearanceLarge" />

As of API 19 (KitKat):
?android:textAppearanceSmall is currently 14sp
?android:textAppearanceMedium is currently 18sp
?android:textAppearanceLarge is currently 22sp

These default sizes and concepts are also documented in the "Typographic scale" section of the Android Design guide [2].

Note that setting the text appearance will also affect the default values for text color attributes such as android:textColor and android:textColorHint. You can always override the default values by providing those attributes directly on the TextView element:

<TextView
    ...
    android:textAppearance="?android:textAppearanceLarge"
    android:textColor="@color/my_own_color"
    android:textColorLink="@color/my_own_link_color"/>

Also note that you don't necessarily have to use the system default appearances. You can create your own set of type sizes and colors that fits your desired visual design. For information on creating your own theme attributes, see the #Protip we posted on the topic back in October [3].

Lastly, if you want to check out the definition of these standard text appearances in the framework code, look for "textAppearanceLarge" in the Theme.Holo (or Theme.Holo.Light) definition in themes.xml [4]. The attribute values will be style resources (such as TextAppearance.Holo.Large), for which you can find definitions  in styles.xml [5]. In the example above, note that TextAppearance.Holo.Large inherits from TextAppearance.Large, which in turn inherits from the standard TextAppearance style.

I recently saw a question on /r/androiddev asking how to implement a fancy animation… and decided to demonstrate how to do it using AnimatedVectorDrawable.

Here's a breakdown of how I did it: https://medium.com/@crafty/animation-jump-through-861f4f5b3de4

Or you can jump straight to the code here: https://gist.github.com/nickbutcher/97143b3240682e5c5851fe45b49fde93

LG Display, the display-making arm of LG, announced a new 5.7-inch LCD with aspect ratio of 18:9 and a QHD+ resolution, which the company says will be used in LG’s next flagship smartphone.

The emphasis of the new design will be on maximizing the screen-to-body ratio. QHD+ simply tacks on an extra few rows of pixels to the familiar Quad HD, with the new LG Display panel stretching out to 2880 x 1440 resolution. LG Display also claims to have improved power consumption by an impressive 30 percent. The company also notes a 10 percent improvement in transmittance, making for better outdoor visibility.
