The outlook for the #economy across #Africa this year is looking cautiously positive, according to this year’s African #EconomicOutlook 2018. One of the key points to come from this year’s study is that, overall, the African economy is still growing. Abebe Shimeles, the acting Director and Manager of Development Research Division at the African Development Bank, underlined that growth remains in the double digits, which is good. However, Africa is still lagging behind the others.

Prime Minister #NarendraModi will visit #Rwanda and #Uganda before heading to #SouthAfrica to attend the 10th addition of the #BRICS Summit in Johannesburg. Modi will first stop in Rwanda for a two-day ‘historic’ visit, the first by an Indian premier. He will then head to Uganda on July 24 and from there to South Africa.
PM Modi will be received by Rwandan President #PaulKagame when he arrives in the country on the first leg of his three-nation tour. After visiting Rwanda, the prime minister will head to Uganda on July 24 for a two-day visit, the first bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister since 1997. The prime minister’s programme in Uganda includes a call on President #YoweriMuseveni, restricted and delegation level talks, and participation at an India-Uganda joint business event. After visiting both the nations, the PM will head to South Africa on June 25, where he will be participating in the BRICS Summit.

When China’s president, #XiJinping was first appointed president in 2013, his maiden foreign visit included a trip to the #Congo Brazzaville and to #SouthAfrica. Once again, since being appointed a second term, his first trip is a four-nation tour of the continent. Xi Jinping visited #Senegal, #Rwanda, and South Africa where he attended the #BRICS Summit. He concluded the tour in #Mauritius.
#China’s top leadership (the president, premier and foreign minister) has made a total of 79 visits to 43 different #Africancountries over the past 10 years, according to Development Reimagined. South #Africa has had the most visits with a total of seven (now eight) visits by Chinese officials in the last 10 years. This makes sense as South Africa does have the largest stock of Chinese #FDI in Africa.

Chinese President #XiJinping and Indian Prime Minister #NarendraModi have continued to lend in tandem to #Africancountries ahead of a major #emergingmarkets summit in Johannesburg, #SouthAfrica, beginning on Wednesday (July 25). Xi, arriving in South Africa on Tuesday, pledged $14.7bn of investment to the country.
Modi’s lending on behalf of #India has been more modest, as the world’s fastest-growing major economy trails #China’s ubiquity on the #Africancontinent. During a flying visit to #Uganda, Modi pledged $205m to the East African country. The sum is intended to help Uganda develop its dominant agricultural sector and electricity distribution infrastructure. Both Xi and Modi were in #Rwanda earlier this week, where a total of over $300m was announced in loans.

With and estimated #GDP of $350bn in 2017, #SouthAfrica sits comfortably as Africa’s second largest economy - a position it lost briefly to #Egypt in 2016, when the North African nation shot past our struggling economy with GDP output of $332bn, versus our $295bn. #Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy by some margin - with a growth projection so large that it is unlikely that South #Africa will surpass it.
Measuring wealth by GDP per capita has always been more indicative of a country’s overall economic health. In this measure, Nigeria slips significantly to 15th position on the list, just ahead of Egypt. Here, other #Africannations shine through - such as the business-friendly #Mauritius, and the oil-rich #Gabon, which produce billions of dollar’s worth of value, while holding relatively small population.

The Central Bank of #Nigeria sold #yuan for the first time as it looks to boost commerce between #China and #Africa’s biggest oil producer and reduce the dominance of the #dollar as a trading currency. Governor Godwin Emefiele granted approval for the auction to take place on Friday (July 20).
The auction comes after Nigeria and China signed a #naira -yuan currency swap worth the equivalent of $2.4bn in May. Emefiele said the 3-year deal would help increase trade and reduce pressure on the naira-dollar exchange rate by weaning Nigerian importers off the #greenback. Despite Africa’s growing trade links with China, the dollar and euro dominate as trading currencies on the continent, according to a June report from Swift.

#Brazil, #Russia, #India, #China and #SouthAfrica - representing about 40% of the world’s population and almost a quarter of its output, think it’s time for a change in how things are done. After a 3-day summit in Johannesburg, the #BRICS nations said they want a fairer, more representative global order in diplomacy and trade just as #China, the biggest member, faces billions of dollars of extra US tariffs.
They also seek reforms at the #UnitedNations, the UN Security Council and the #InternationalMonetaryFund to better represent #developingnations, and have asked that members of the #WorldTradeOrganization - including the US - abide by #WTO rules as the multilateral trading system faces 'unprecedented challenges.'

If last week’s love-fest with Europe’s leaders was not emphatic enough, #XiJinping’s travels this week through #Africa, culminating with the #BRICs summit in #SouthAfrica, showed determination to set China’s own trade agenda, to set it in its own time, and to set it far from Washington’s Twitter-storms. Xi visited two countries on his way to South Africa - #Senegal and #Rwanda, which the World Bank ranks as the 161st and 171st richest countries in the world by per capita GDP.
The choice of Senegal and Rwanda is also a significant indicator of Beijing’s strikingly long-term planning vision. Anyone looking to build strong businesses in either country can only see bleak prospects in the short term. But take a 40- or 50-year view, and such economies can make sense.

Chinese President #XiJinping visited the West African country of #Senegal over the weekend, building trade ties which could bear fruit in terms of #China’s access to U.S. markets. Xi met with his Senegalese counterpart #MackySall, as well as Senegalese Prime Minister #MohammedDionne, as part of a 2-day visit which began on Saturday (July 21).
Following bilateral talks, Senegal signed up to be the first West African nation committed to China’s #BeltandRoadInitiative, a multi-billion dollar scheme to resurrect ancient trading routes centered on China. Senegal, with a population of just 16 million, might seem like a curious stop for Xi given that #Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, is also in the #WestAfrica region. China is Senegal’s second largest trading partner after its former colonial power France.
