Lately, the American president has emerged as a great unifier of #Europe. Ever since #Trump's Tuesday (May 8) announcement that the U.S. was withdrawing from the nuclear agreement with #Iran, one of the core pieces of international diplomacy in recent years, the Europeans have been united in shock, in anger at Trump's irresponsible move and in their refusal to accept it. But they are also united in their helplessness when it comes to dealing with this new America.
The mood in #Paris, #Brussels and #Berlin is reminiscent of the period just prior to the war in Iraq. Most of Europe refused to back the #US in that conflict, even if the British and the Italians joined then-President George W. Bush in the offensive. This time around, however, the Europeans are united in their desire to preserve the deal with Iran, even if nobody knows how they might be able to. An attack on the Iran deal is an attack on the pride of European #foreignpolicy.

#France urged Europeans to stand up to #US President Donald #Trump over the #Iran nuclear deal and not act as 'vassals,' as the region scrambles to save the 2015 accord and billions of dollars in trade. Arguing the nuclear deal wasn't tough enough on Iran, Trump's government is now re-imposing sanctions, and any companies or governments with links to the U.S. face sanctions if they do not comply.
French Finance Minister #BrunoLeMaire said Friday (May 11) on Europe-1 radio that #Europe should not accept that the U.S. is the 'world's economic policeman.' #EuropeanUnion #foreignpolicy chief #FedericaMogherini insisted that it's not up to the U.S. to determine the deal's future anyway. Among things the #EU could consider, he said, are reinforcing a 1996 'blocking statute' that could allow companies to ignore sanctions. Another could be an independent financing mechanism allowing European companies to avoid U.S. banks.

European leaders are calling President #Trump’s decision to pull out of the #Iran nuclear deal a potentially catastrophic mistake. One French diplomat is so furious, he even coined a new description of Trump’s view of the world: 'unisolationism.' The phrase is the brainchild of one of the most prominent European diplomats in the US, François Delattre, France’s ambassador to the United Nations.
First, they give a sense of the historically high levels of European anger toward Trump over his Iran decision. Second, they’re an unsettling reminder that #Europe’s fears about Trump extend well beyond the Iran decision. The Iran decision, in other words, is just the latest reason for Europeans to conclude that the US is no longer a country that keeps its word and values its allies.

European leaders on Wednesday (May 9) began drawing up plans to preserve the #Iran nuclear accord, in defiance of President Donald #Trump's Tuesday decision to abandon what he called the 'rotten' agreement. The possible action includes legislation that would block Washington from punishing #Europeancompanies that continue to do business with Iran. It reflects #Europe’s deep frustration with Trump’s withdrawal from the 2015 deal despite the pleas of its top leaders.
#EuropeanUnion officials scrambled in Brussels Wednesday to pull together legislation aimed at defending European companies from Washington's new crackdown on Iran. Such legislation would likely mirror #EU action to deflect a 1996 U.S. embargo against Cuba as well as #US sanctions against Libya and Iran. That EU response, which included appeals to the World Trade Organization, ultimately yielded a political agreement with Washington that effectively shielded European companies from enforcement action by the U.S.

The day after #Trump announced his long-dreaded decision to withdraw from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, #EU members were hammering out measures to try to protect European firms doing business in #Iran from #US sanctions. But Trump’s pullout has left international companies doing business in Iran vulnerable to the extraterritoriality of US law, which enables Washington to punish foreign companies operating in Iran if they have business dealings with the US or use dollar transactions.
Slamming the US withdrawal from the Iran deal as 'an error', French Finance Minister Bruno Le Marie complained that it was 'not acceptable' for the US to play 'economic policeman of the planet'.

#Europeancompanies have long been the top investors in the #US, and accounted for over 60% of the total #foreigninvestment in recent years. They support 4.1 million US jobs directly, and accounted for $42bn in spending on R&D in the US in 2014. Now, some of #Europe’s biggest companies are scrambling to figure out the fate billions of dollars in deals made with #Iran. Since the Iran agreement was signed in 2015, a host of large European companies have discussed investments, signed agreements, or formed partnerships in Iran, many of them in the oil, gas, automotive, and pharmaceutical sectors.
Investment and hiring in the US has become increasingly politicized since Trump was elected. After he pressured CEOs from around the world to invest in the US, many of these same European companies made a point of increasing their US presence.
