This is a book I've been meaning to read for ages but never got around to - last week I not only read it but gave a lesson on the historical context for the grade 8 class, who will be reading this book and The Wave. As I found, out of the class of 24, about 20 of them had already read the book, and at least one kid knew it was an allegory of the Russian Revolution. Still, my lesson wasn't totally redundant :)

For anyone who isn't familiar with the story, Animal Farm is about the animals on a farm This is a book I've been meaning to read for ages but never got around to - last week I not only read it but gave a lesson on the historical context for the grade 8 class, who will be reading this book and The Wave. As I found, out of the class of 24, about 20 of them had already read the book, and at least one kid knew it was an allegory of the Russian Revolution. Still, my lesson wasn't totally redundant :)

For anyone who isn't familiar with the story, Animal Farm is about the animals on a farm in England rising up against the incompetent, cruel farmer (Mr Jones, who represents the deposed Tsar, Nicholas II) and taking over the farm, renaming it Animal Farm (USSR) and - so the glorious vision intended - running it for themselves, so their lives would be better.

The vision is given to them by a pig, Old Major, who dies not long afterwards. Old Major probably represents Vladimir Lenin and Karl Marx, and it's not the socialist ideal put forward that is critiqued by this book but how that vision is corrupted by certain other characters, namely another pig called Napoleon, who represents Joseph Stalin. Napoleon chases a pig called Snowball (Leon Trotsky) off the farm with his personally trained dogs (while still just the General Secretary of the Party, Stalin recruited people who would follow him blindly, so that when Lenin died in 1924 he was able to defeat Trotsky for the leadership position and his "dogs" kept everyone else in line).

The pigs then take charge, and with their literacy skills keep changing the rules the animals established in order to suit themselves, using a pig called Squealer to convince the other animals that their memories are faulty. After all, as the drafthorse Boxer keeps saying, "Comrade Napoleon is always right".

Boxer is - for me - the most heartbreaking character in the novel. He represents the peasants, and is the most hardworking animal on the farm. He has utter faith in the leadership of Napoleon and works himself to the bone - literally. His reward is very telling, though I don't want to give it away. Most of the characters represent either a person, several people or groups of people, and for the complete list you can check it out on Wikipedia.

Orwell, while a socialist, was very cynical about Stalin's communist USSR - and for good reason! Animal Farm is a very well-written critique of how socialist ideals are corrupted by powerful people, how the uneducated masses are taken advantage of, and how the dictator or communist leaders turn into capitalists (just look at China). It's a wonderful example of how effective the allegorical style/format can be, and a well-deserved classic. ...more

This is not really a review, but one of those moments where everything that was clear to you suddenly becomes utterly muddied and you really can't say what lies beneath the murky waters although a moment before you were sure you could.

I'm reading Christopher Hitchen's astonishingly percipient and brilliant Arguably: Essays. I read Animal Farm too young to identify the individual animals with actual character Review edited to include (at the end) Amazon's very Orwellian involvement with this book.

I'm reading Christopher Hitchen's astonishingly percipient and brilliant Arguably: Essays. I read Animal Farm too young to identify the individual animals with actual characters on the stage of communism (the old boar Major is Marx, Farmer Jones is the Tsar, the pigs Napoleon and Snowball, Stalin and Trotsky respectively) so this essay is giving me a lot to think about. So far, nothing more so than this quote (below).

(Background to the quote): A group of Ukrainian and Polish refugees in a displaced persons' camp had discovered sympathetic parallels with their own plight in Orwell's parable and had begged him for permission to translate his almost-totally unknown book. But...

The emotions of the American military authorities in Europe were not so easily touched. They rounded up all the copies of Animal Farm they could find and turned them over to the Red Army to be burned. The alliance between the farmers and the pigs so hauntingly described in the final pages of the novel were still in force.

The book is banned in Cuba, North Korea, Burma, Iran, Kenya and most Arab countries. It is banned in the UAE not because of it's content but because it has anthropomorphic talking pigs which are unIslamic (is this not Orwellian in itself?). It is still censored in Vietnam. These nations wouldn't want ordinary people reading the book and looking at their own ruling ~~pigs~~ elites and seeing any parallels now would they? Who knows what kind of thoughts and actions that might lead to?

Amazon and Animal Farm
On 17 July 2009, Amazon.com withdrew certain Amazon Kindle titles, including Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, from sale, refunded buyers, and remotely deleted items from purchasers' devices after discovering that the publisher lacked rights to publish the titles in question. Notes and annotations for the books made by users on their devices were also deleted. After the move prompted outcry and comparisons to Nineteen Eighty-Four itself, Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener stated that the company is "changing our systems so that in the future we will not remove books from customers' devices in these circumstances." However, at the end of 2014 Amazon does not seem to a guarantee in its ToS that they won't don't this again. Wikipedia

Next step: Fahrenheit 451. Get the firemen out to burn the books, only ebooks allowed where content can be controlled.

هي تقرأ وتستوعب فحسب

قرأت تلك الرواية قبل احداث 30 يونيو 2013
والغريب جدا ان بعد أعادة قراءتي للريفيو أجد أنها تصلح لنفس الحال بعد سنتين..نفس الريفيو الرمزي يصلح لأي وقت...بالضبط كالرواية..وسعدت أني كتبت الريفيو بالرمز مثلها
العجيب فعلا ان الرواية تصلح لكل العهود السياسية التي أتت علينا
مصر قبل 25 يناير وبعدها
مصر قبل 30 يونيو وبعدها
وبمجرد ان قرئتها..شعرت ان هذه الرواية يجب ان يتم تدريسها بالمدارس..فكل الاجيال تستحق هذا الوعي السياسي

الا اني رايت سببا -وان اكاد ان اجزم انه ليس السبب الرئيسي لهذا- ان نهايتها المقبضه لا تتناسب لصغار السن
ولكن هذه النهاية المقبضة للاسف...واقعية

جورج أورويل عبقري بشكل مزعج. يكتب رواية أبطالها حيوانات في مزرعة ويخيل إليك بأن الأمر سيكون سخيفاً، أو شبيها بقصص الأطفال. على العكس، جورج أورويل نقل الواقع بكابوسيته، وجعل التاريخ أكثر قابلية للفهم، وشرح لنا باختصار كيف يمكن أن يتحول الإنسان إلى خنزير والخنزير إلى إنسان.

رواية جديرة بوقتك بالتأكيد.

Funnily enough, i read this book as a child and thought that it really WAS about animals. I remember thinking, Evil Pigs, I'm glad you're bacon in MY world, and Poor Hardworking Horsies, come live on my farm instead. You can have all the hay and makopa you want (sadly, no apples, tropical climate).

I reread it after education spoiled my natural inclinations for fast and absolute punishment of evildoers and eternal rewards for the good. I do find it pleasantly strange that these animals are symbol ...more

I first read this in Grade 11 and decided it was my favourite book. I knew a reread needed to happen right away, but it took me four years to finally get around to it when my boyfriend gifted me this beautiful illustrated edition. Animal Farm is a book I often think about and often quote, and it was a bit nerve-wracking to go back to it to see if it actually lived up to everything I had built it up to be. Thankfully, I'm thrilled to say it did.

إذا قرأت "مزرعة الحيوانات" ولم تعلم أن كاتبها إنجليزي لربما ظننت أنه عربي الأصل! وإذا قرأتها وأنت لا تعلم أنها كُتِبت عام 1943 لربما حسبتها إصدارًا حديثًا!
بعد أن أنهيتها قرأت عنها بعض الدراسات النقدية من نقّاد مختلفي الجنسيات، وقد أجمعوا على أن تفرُّد أورويل يرجع إلى أنه كتب رواية تصلح لأي زمان ومكان.

كتبها أورويل تأثُرًا بالحرب العالمية الثانية، وكانت "المزرعة" هي الإتحاد السوفييتي، وكان لكل شخصية في الرواية من يقابلها في ذلك الوقت. ورغم ذلك عندما تقرأها ستجد في رمزيتها تقاربًا شديدًا مع واقعنا، إذا قرأت "مزرعة الحيوانات" ولم تعلم أن كاتبها إنجليزي لربما ظننت أنه عربي الأصل! وإذا قرأتها وأنت لا تعلم أنها كُتِبت عام 1943 لربما حسبتها إصدارًا حديثًا!

عمومًا الإنترنت حافل بالدراسات المحترمة والممتعة عن تلك الرواية، لمن أراد التعمق في فهمها بعد قراءتها.

وبقى أن أشكر (عبد الحميد الكاتب) الذي قام بعرض تلك الرواية -وليس ترجمتها حرفيًا- بمهارة، وأرفق مقدمة وجيزة عن حياة أورويل، وتذييل رائع عنها ذاتها.

I absolutely loved this book. It wasn't boring to me at all. I think Orwell did a great job of symbolizing all the injustice that happens in name of an outside force and how simple minded people who do not educate themselves get taken advantage from, be it West for Soviet Russia, America for Iran or Terrorists for the United states.

وهذه قصة رمزية كتبها أورويل بهدف يحدده بنفسه عندما يقول "ما من شيء ساهم في إفساد المعنى الأصلي لمذهب الاشتراكية أكثر من الاعتقاد بأن روسيا بلد اشتراكي، وأن كل فعل يصدر عن القادة السوفيات ينبغي تبريره بل محاكاته، لهذا السبب أصبحت مقتنعاً في السنوات العشر الماضية بأن تدمير الأسطورة السوفياتية من خلال كتابة قصة يسهل على الجميع فهمها كما يسهل ترجمتها إلى لغات عدة"، حتى نفهم هذا نحتاج إلى أن نتعرف على أورويل قليلاً.

ولد أورويل في الهند حيث كان والده يعمل هناك سنة 1903 م، وأورويل ليس إلا اسمه الأدبي، أما اسمه الحقيقي فهو ايريك آرثر بلير، عاد إلى إنجلترا وهو في الرابعة من عمره، حيث تلقى تعليمه هناك حتى تعين في الشرطة الإمبراطورية الهندية في بورما، حيث عمل هناك لخمسة أعوام.

نلاحظ أن أورويل في هذا كله كان يعيش حياة أي شاب بريطاني من طبقته في ذلك الوقت، الطبقة الوسطى، طبقة موظفي الإمبراطورية البريطانية، وكان يمكن لأورويل أن يستمر في هذه الحياة لولا أن هناك شيئين غيرا مسار حياته، الأول هو رغبته في أن يكون كاتباً، والأمر الآخر هو كرهه للإمبريالية التي كان يخدمها وهو في بورما، فلذا استقال من عمله سنة 1927 م وعاد إلى إنجلترا.

سأترك الآن سيرة أورويل قليلاً لأعبر عن فكرة جانبية صغيرة، فيما مضى عندما كنت اقرأ أي سيرة ذاتية لشخص ما، سياسي، مفكر أو كاتب، كنت أمر على مثل هذه الأحداث التي عاشها بطلنا مروراً سريعاً، وأظن أننا جميعاً نفعل هذا، مسيرة حياة الرجل الذي نقرأ عنه تبدو لنا حالة دائمة من التقدم، تحقيق الذات، وهذا هو الوهم الذي يتسلل إلينا من قراءة السير الذاتية، أورويل الذي نعرفه الآن من خلال كتبه (مزرعة الحيوان) و(1984) و(متشرداً في باريس ولندن)، لم يكن أورويل الذي استقال من عمله، حياة الإنسان ليست خطاً يمكننا رسمه من لحظة الولادة إلى لحظة الممات، ومن ثم تعيين نقاط عليه لنقول هذه النقاط التي حقق فيها ذاته، حياة الإنسان خط متقطع، متعرج، ملتوٍ على ذاته أحياناً، بحيث أننا في حالات كثيرة نكاد ننفي وجود خط من أساسه، ربما نحن نفعل هذا لأننا نظن أن سيرة الإنسان هي ما حدث له، بينما جزء من حياة الإنسان هو ما لم يحدث، في حالة الكتاب مثلاً، لماذا نادراً ما تذكر أعمال الكاتب المجهضة، غير المكتملة؟ أعماله التي مات وتركها في أدراجه؟ لأننا بكل بساطة نحاول أن نقدم سيراً ذاتية تجعل صاحبها يبدو وكأنه كان يعرف ما يفعله في كل لحظة، ويتجه إليه بلا تردد، وهذه سير تخنق قارئها، لأنها تقدم له الشكل النهائي، تقدم له النموذج، بحيث أن قارئها الشاب الذي بالتأكيد لا يدري أين سيأخذه مساره في الحياة، يشعر بالنقص، يشعر بأن من يقرأ عنهم مختلفون عنه تماماً، مكتملون نوعاً ما، وهو أبداً لن يكون كذلك.

من حسن الحظ أنني لا أكتب سيرة لأورويل، وإلا لكنت وضعت نفسي في موقف حرج بعد سطوري السابقة، لأنه كان عندها لازماً علي أن أتجاوز الهوة التي وصفتها، وأحاول نقل روح الكاتب وأفكاره بلا تدخل وملأ للفراغات الموجودة.

نعود إلى أورويل الذي عاد إلى إنجلترا، وبما أنه كان قد انفصل عن طبقته عندما رفض الوظيفة الحكومية، التي سيخدم من خلالها الإمبريالية، فلذا عاش متشرداً ما بين لندن وباريس، وهي التجربة التي سجلها في كتابه (متشرداً ما بين باريس ولندن)، هذه التجربة، هذا الاقتراب من الطبقات الدنيا في المجتمع البريطاني، جعلته يعي الظلم الواقع عليها، وهو ما جعله يتبنى الاشتراكية، ويقوم بنفسه بزيارة عمال المناجم في ويغان، حيث يعيش معهم ويسجل تجربتهم في كتابه (الطريق إلى رصيف ويغان)، وعندما قامت الحرب الأهلية الأسبانية، انتقل إلى هناك وشارك في الحرب، وسجل تجربته في كتابه (الحنين إلى كاتالونيا).

نأتي الآن إلى كتابه هذا الذي نشره في سنة 1945 م، قبل نهاية الحرب العالمية بأسابيع، في العبارة التي أوردناها في الأعلى، نفهم غرض أورويل من الكتاب، عندما نتذكر كل الأحلام والشعارات الاشتراكية، وكل الوعود بالعالم الذي سينتهي فيه صراع الطبقات، كل هذا ذرته الحقبة الستالينية في الهواء، إن أورويل من خلال هذه الرواية يحاول إنقاذ الاشتراكية من السوفيات الذين دمروا سمعتها تماماً، ومنحوا الرأسماليين بكل بساطة حجة لا تقهر على سوء الاشتراكية وفشلها.

ليفعل هذا يحكي لنا قصة مزرعة تثور الحيوانات فيها على صاحبها السكير الذي كان يستغلها لمصالحه من دون أن يعطيها حتى كفايتها من الطعام، هذه الثورة تأتي لتحقق نبوءة حكيم الحيوانات وهو خنزير اسمه (ميجر)، والذي تنبأ بالثورة ومات قبل أن يشهدها – شخصيته هي مزيج من ماركس ولينين -، يقود الثورة بعد هذا خنزيران أحدهما يدعى سنوبول – شخصيته مزيج من لينين وتروتسكي - والآخر نابليون – ستالين -، ويتم وضع سبعة قوانين لمذهب الحيوانية الذي ستسير الحياة في (مزرعة الحيوانات) على أساسه، تبدأ الحيوانات في العمل الشاق، وخاصة بناء طاحونة تهدف الحيوانات من بنائها إلى توفير الطاقة الكهربائية للمزرعة، تبدأ الخنازير التي تولت القيادة في تمييز نفسها عن الحيوانات الأخرى، وكسر بعض القوانين السبعة، بل إعادة كتابتها لتتناسب مع الوضع الجديد، يطرد نابليون سنوبول ويسيطر على المزرعة بقوة، محيطاً نفسه بخنازير محدودة، وبكلاب شرسة لا تدين بالولاء إلا له، مع الوقت تصبح حياة الحيوانات أسوأ مما كانت في ظل صاحبها الإنسان السابق، ولكن لا أحد يتذكر، والدعاية الدائمة التي يقدمها الحكام الجدد، تمجد الإنجازات التي قاموا بها، وويل لمن يشكك في هذا، في النهاية تكسر الخنازير آخر القوانين السبعة، وهو قانون غريب كانت الحيوانات أقرته، يفرق بين الحيوانات والإنسان وهو باعتبار أن من يمشي على قدمين عدو، ومن يمشي على أربع صديق، ولنلاحظ أن الخنازير لم تكن محتاجة إلى كسر هذا القانون، ولكنها تفعل، وتعلم نفسها المشي على قدمين، لتميز نفسها عن بقية الحيوانات، وهكذا تمحى القوانين السبعة التي ولدت مع الثورة، وتختم الرواية على مشهد الخنازير وهي تتبادل المصالح مع أصحاب المزارع المجاورة من البشر، بحيث لم تعد الحيوانات تفرق ما بين البشر والخنازير، وبحيث لم تعد المزرعة للحيوانات، وإنما تحول اسمها إلى (ضيعة الخنازير).

الرواية كما نرى هي القصة المؤلمة لتبدد الحلم الاشتراكي على يد السوفيات، أما المستقبل المرعب الذي كان أورويل يتوقعه لهذه التجربة فسنقرؤه في روايته التالية 1984.

George OrwellI got stunned for a while when I finished Animal Farm-a masterpiece from George Orwell- for the novella depicts our society so perfectly- the role of power, how corrupts those who are apex of a social system and eventually they eliminate their competitors, and it happens with almost every social system, it's like a treatise on our society.

Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely-and this is vividly and eloquently proved in Orwell's short novel. "Animal Farm" is a simple fable of great symbolic value, and as Orwell himself explained: "it is the history of a revolution that went wrong". The novel can be seen as the historical analysis of the causes of the failure of communism, or as a mere fairy-tale; in any case it tells a good story that aims to prove that human nature and diversity prevent people from being equal and happy ,or at least equally happy.

"Animal Farm" tells the simple and tragic story of what happens when the oppressed farm animals rebel, drive out Mr. Jones, the farmer, and attempt to rule the farm themselves, on an equal basis. What the animals seem to have aimed at was a utopian sort of communism, where each would work according to his capacity, respecting the needs of others. The venture failed, and "Animal Farm" ended up being a dictatorship of pigs, who were the brightest, and most idle of the animals.

Orwell's mastery lies in his presentation of the horrors of totalitarian regimes, and his analysis of communism put to practice, through satire and simple story-telling. The structure of the novel is skillfully organized, and the careful reader may, for example, detect the causes of the unworkability of communism even from the first chapter. This is deduced from Orwell's description of the various animals as they enter the barn and take their seats to listen to the revolutionary preaching of Old Major, father of communism in Animal Farm. Each animal has different features and attitude; the pigs, for example, "settled down in the straw immediately in front of the platform", which is a hint on their future role, whereas Clover, the affectionate horse" made a sort of wall" with her foreleg to protect some ducklings.

So, it appears that the revolution was doomed from the beginning, even though it began in idealistic optimism as expressed by the motto" no animal must ever tyrannize over his own kind. Weak or strong, clever or simple, we are all brothers. "When the animals drive out Mr. Jones, they create their "Seven Commandments" which ensure equality and prosperity for all the animals. The pigs, however, being the natural leaders, managed to reverse the commandments, and through terror and propaganda establish the rule of an elite of pigs, under the leadership of Napoleon, the most revered and sinister pig.

"Animal Farm" successfully presents how the mechanism of propaganda and brainwashing works in totalitarian regimes, by showing how the pigs could make the other animals believe practically anything. Responsible for the propaganda was Squealer, a pig that "could turn black into white". Squealer managed to change the rule from "all animals are equal" to" all animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others". He managed to convince the other animals that it was for their sake that the pigs ate most of the apples and drank most of the milk, that leadership was "heavy responsibility" and therefore the animals should be thankful to Napoleon, that what they saw may have been something they "dreamed", and when everything else failed he would use the threat of " Jones returning" to silence the animals. In this simple but effective way, Orwell presents the tragedy and confusion of thought control to the extent that one seems better off simply believing that" Napoleon is always right".

Orwell's criticism of the role of the Church is also very effective. In Animal Farm, the Church is represented by Moses, a tame raven, who talks of "Sugarcandy Mountain", a happy country in the sky "where we poor animals shall rest forever from our labors". It is interesting to observe that when Old Major was first preaching revolutionary communism, Moses was sleeping in the barn, which satirizes the Church being caught asleep by communism. It is also important to note that the pig-dictators allowed and indirectly encouraged Moses; it seems that it suited the pigs to have the animals dreaming of a better life after death so that they wouldn't attempt to have a better life while still alive...

In "Animal Farm", Orwell describes how power turned the pigs from simple "comrades" to ruthless dictators who managed to walk on two legs, and carry whips. The story maybe seen as an analysis of the Soviet regime, or as a warning against political power games of an absolute nature and totalitarianism in general. For this reason, the story ends with a hair-raising warning to all humankind:" The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again: but already it was impossible to say which was which".

Animal Farm is one of those classic books that I’m always hearing people talk about. People are always telling me it’s one of those books you just have to read before you die (even though I don't plan on dying anytime soon, I thought I would get the book out of the way). So, when I found the book in my dads collection I thought “why not? Let’s see what all the fuss is about.”

نارضایتی مردم از انقلابی که فراموش شده و اهدافی که تغییر پیدا کرده و به قول جورج اُرول در این کتاب "منسوخ شده" خط به خط این کتاب باعث پوزخند من بود و گاهی یاد تاریخ انقلاب های کشورهای مختلف میفتادم و یک جای هم حس کردم چقدر داستان این کتاب شبیه وضعیت کره ی شمالی هست و یک جاهایی هم حتی شبیه وضعیت کشور نازنین خودمون که هیچی اش شبیه اون شوق و شعار نفت ملی و تمام درآمدش برای مردم و در جیب مردم نیست ! و کجا رفت اون همه وقار و اون همه برنامه ریزی ها و شعار یکسان شدن مردم و ما فقط در هر انقلاب و کشوری و همین حوالی , تفاوت و تضاد طبقاتی رو میبینیم , مثل زندگی خوک و سگ های مزرعه که آخر کتاب به انسان تشبیه شده بودن و یا جالب تر حتی ! گوسفند های داخل داستان که من رو یاد بادنجان دور قاب چین های هر دوره ی سیاسی میندازه ! که دقیقا مثل گوسفند ها فقط طرفداری بیخود میکنند و تایم مغز های متفکرکه زنگ خطر رو سریع تر حس میکنن رو برای اعتراضی قوی میگیرن و آه از این همه واقعیت و آه از این همه علم به اصل قضیه و آه برای آن حیوانات بیچاره که انقلاب کردند و کشته دادند و اعدام شدند و اخر هم "کارگر" خطاب شدن که ته داستان جرئت اعتراض نداشتند و خفه شده از پشت شیشه فقط چشم شده بودند و نگاه میکردند و ... گاهی این دنیای فانی خیلی کثیف میشه چه در داستان چه در واقعیت های نزدیک و بیخ گوش مان ...

After overthrowing the pigs, Animal Farm went back to its democratic ways. Now animals were not mistreated or slaughtered based on the dictatorship of the pigs; rather, they had to agree to get slaughtered (on a selective basis, of course: can't afford to deplete the herd) to make the farm economically viable. Since they now had the freedom to choose (never matter the only choice was on how to get slaughtered), everything was hunky-dory. And the animals wrote a hymn to free market economy:

I'd read Orwell as a girl, one with ethnic roots reaching back to the Baltic States (Latvia) then occupied by the Soviet Union, and so having grown up on stories of human cruelty and betrayal, of human nature gone corrupt when faced with the seduction of power -- all of that rather than the common, soothing fairy tale. For that reason, I surely understood it on a deeper level than most of my peers. I was fifteen the first of many times I visited the Soviet Un It wasn't my first stay on the farm. I'd read Orwell as a girl, one with ethnic roots reaching back to the Baltic States (Latvia) then occupied by the Soviet Union, and so having grown up on stories of human cruelty and betrayal, of human nature gone corrupt when faced with the seduction of power -- all of that rather than the common, soothing fairy tale. For that reason, I surely understood it on a deeper level than most of my peers. I was fifteen the first of many times I visited the Soviet Union. And even though I had been born in the then freedom of the United States, I understood well enough that what I was witnessing was the essence of evil.

George Orwell was a socialist. With leanings towards Trotsky, perhaps an idealism that would be tested by the ugly reality of human nature, he did not stand where I stood in terms of ideology. I leaned more towards a laissez faire capitalism, a system never tested on this planet to this very day, but that did not detract from my enthusiasm for "Animal Farm." On this barnyard, we saw eye to eye and snout to snout.

"Animal Farm" is a story as if written for a child, and yet, not. Its language is simple. But the adult aware of history and politics, of the ways of government out of control, fully recognizes the parallels Orwell intended with the Russian Revolution. His animal characters had human counterparts. Marx, Trotsky, Lenin, Stalin, all find their form here among pigs become men, or is it men become pigs. Guard dogs mimic KGB, hard working horses (Boxer) mimic the hardworking proletarians, tragically deluded. A farm of abused and overworked animals, often slaughtered when they have passed their prime as work animals, revolt against the farmer - mankind - surely the epitome of cruel animal. Alas, given such power as to run the farm themselves, the animals quickly shift into social classes delineated by power. Pigs rule, and with their rule comes privilege. To sustain privilege, the pigs change laws to their convenience and pleasure. The basic tenet of "All animals are equal" becomes "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others."

Orwell wrote about the Russian Revolution. And well he should, because it can be argued that the cruelty of that government has as yet not been fully understood by the "free world" even today. Yet the power and timelessness of this tale is that it can be applied to all governments when not held firmly within their checks and balances -- and frightening parallels can be witnessed in the current administration of the United States. I reread the book today with growing dis-ease. With all of our talk of superiority, our Patriot Acts and our eavesdropping, our acts of aggression and our collective amnesia surrounding the Geneva Act, there but for the grace of God go we... ...more

Toda esta reflexión es presentada de una manera impecable, los pasajes son descritos de una forma que logra transmitir todo lo que los personajes estan sintiéndo, no obstante la narrativa es a manera de cuento infantil por lo que cada mensaje es entendido de manera aun sin conocer la historia en la cual es basada dado que los humanos seguimos sin cambiar y, por tanto, la historia sigue un curso cíclico, con o sin memoria. Esto último queda principalmente demostrado en la figura de Snowball quien, aun cuando realizo diversas acciones cuestionables, paso a la historia como un ser mucho más benevolente e incluso en ocasiones santíficado, sólo por la mera comparación con Napoleon o Johns.

Lo que a la postre termino siendo lo más modificado fue el final, que en esta obra muestra lo que sucede en la actualidad y lo que fue clave en la obra de Orwell: la falta de optimismo, la realidad cruda y dura de la sobra de los medios y la carencia del valor para obtener el "vivieron felices".

"Mientras Clover miraba ladera abajo, se le llenaron los ojos de lágrimas. Si ella pudiera expresar sus pensamientos, hubiera sido para decir que a eso no era a lo que aspiraban
cuando emprendieron, años atrás, el derrocamiento de la raza humana. Aquellas escenas de terror y matanza no eran lo que ellos soñaron aquella noche cuando el Viejo Mayor, por primera vez, los incitó a rebelarse. Si ella misma hubiera concebido un cuadro del futuro, sería el de una sociedad de animales liberados del hambre y del látigo, todos iguales, cada uno trabajando de acuerdo con su capacidad, el fuerte protegiendo al débil, como ella protegiera con su pata delantera a aquellos patitos perdidos la noche del discurso de Mayor. En su lugar —ella no sabía por qué— habían llegado a un estado tal en el que nadie se atrevía a decir lo que pensaba, en el que perros feroces y gruñones merodeaban por doquier y donde uno tenía que ver cómo sus camaradas eran despedazados después de confesarse autores de crímenes horribles. رائع.. جميل.. مذهل..
صادم.. مخيف.. محبط..

شعرت أننى أقرأ تاريخ كل ثورة
فى كل بلد بلا استثناء

هذه الرواية ليس لها تلخيص لأنها نفسها تلخيص للواقع

المشكلة التى أقف أمامها هى ماذا بعد؟؟
هأنذا قرأتُها وغيري قرأها ثم ماذا بعد؟؟
هل تخرج ثوراتنا القادمة عن هذا القالب الأوحد؟؟

وحتى إذا درسها الطلاب فى المدارس،
فهل يدرسون أيضًا معها وسيلة مقاومة الكلاب الشرسة؟؟

المشكلة الحقيقية أن هذا لن يحدث أبدًا
وستظل هذه الرواية وحتى الأبد مجرد رواية
نقرأها نفهمها ونذهل من العقلية التى كتبتها..

Animal Farm is a significant novel for the Western World. George Orwell wrote this in 1943 as a tirade against the Soviet Union. Orwell was born to a poor family so he did not enjoy his early years of schooling as a boy at Eton because his classmates were rich. As a young man, he went to serve the British Army in Burma and he also did not enjoy it because Burmese people hated British people as they were the colonizers. During WWII, Russia was an ally of Great Britain so the British government ba Animal Farm is a significant novel for the Western World. George Orwell wrote this in 1943 as a tirade against the Soviet Union. Orwell was born to a poor family so he did not enjoy his early years of schooling as a boy at Eton because his classmates were rich. As a young man, he went to serve the British Army in Burma and he also did not enjoy it because Burmese people hated British people as they were the colonizers. During WWII, Russia was an ally of Great Britain so the British government banned this book as it was seen as ridiculing the Soviet Union. In short, it seems to me that since being a boy until the time that was struggling as a novelist, Orwell must have felt disliked or unloved.

In 1943, working in a left-leaning Socialist newspaper, his mother died. He resigned from work and started writing The Animal Farm. In 1945, his wife died and he decided to published this novel.

I may be wrong on this but this book was originally written as propaganda against Communism and the Western World liked this because it served their agenda. Had it been opposed to the democratic form of government, would it be as successful as this?

Maybe yes. Reason: the story is written very very well. Even if you read the story as-is, meaning without knowledge of Orwell’s personal loneliness or political agenda, it can give Lewis Carol’s Alice in the Wonderland or even A. Milne’s Winnie-The-Pooh a run for their money. The plot is thick and well-executed. The characters are solid and well-developed. There is a clear villain Napoleon and heroes Snowball and Boxer. It elicits appropriate emotions. The lessons are well-entrenched and the climax heightened the story and the denouement or conclusion, though it has a sad ending, is appropriate for the message that it wanted to impart: excessive power can be evil.

Maybe no. Reason: English language dominates world literature. English is the most popular language and it was Orwell’s native tongue. Had he been born as Chinese, would this be included in best novels lists? Time 100? Modern Library 100? Metalist? Guardian? My guess is that this would have been buried in obscurity. Again, I may be wrong on this as I am just an Asian reader, with English not my first language, who took a vow a couple of years back to read all books included in the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die I have not encountered any Chinese or Russian books yet that are opposed to Democratic process so I cannot really say. Philippines follows a democratic form of government and I support it wholeheartedly. I abide by the laws stated in our constitution. However, still my point is: there is no perfect form of government and we can’t say for sure that democracy is white and communism is black.

Had I read this when I was a lot younger, I have no doubt that this could have earned from me, 4 or even 5 perfectly-shining stars. It’s just that if I consider the many books that I’ve read so far, taking everything into consideration, I just didn’t find this truly amazing to deserve either of those ratings.

Έτσι, μια μέρα που ολα τα ζωάκια υποκινουμενα απο τα φιλόδοξα γουρουνάκια επαναστατούν κατα της καταπίεσης και της σκληρής εξουσίας που τους ασκείται απο τον κ. Τζοόυνς -τον αφέντη της ζωής τους- γίνονται αυτόνομα σε μια δική τους κοινωνία χωρις ανθρώπους αφεντάδες.

Τα γουρουνάκια όμως που εξ αρχής θεωρούν τους εαυτούς τους υπεράνω καταφέρνουν με απόλυτα δημοκρατικούς τρόπους να επιβάλλουν μια άνιση ισότητα στα χαζά πρόβατα,τα δυνατά και γεμάτα αυτοθυσία άλογα,τα σοφά ξεροκέφαλα γαϊδούρια και γενικά σε ολα τα ζώα -που δεν έχουν εκ φύσεως τις ίδιες δυνατότητες και επιθυμίες-στην απόλυτη τυραννική και ανεξάρτητη δημοκρατία.

Ολα τα ζώα προσαρμόζονται στις νέες συνθήκες που επιβάλλουν τα ανθρωπόμορφα καπιταλιστικά ή σοβιετικά γουρούνια -τα οποια μετά το τέλος της επανάστασης έχουν καταλύσει τα δικαιώματα των υπολοίπων και ζουν πλουσιοπάροχα και αναπροσαρμόζουν τα ΝΑΙ σε ΟΧΙ και ταναπαλιν, εκμεταλλευόμενα το χαμηλό μορφωτικό επίπεδο των περισσότερων "συντρόφων τους", που έχουν αδύναμη μνήμη, δεν ξέρουν καλά-καλά να διαβάζουν, όμως ονειρεύονται και ελπίζουν.

Στο τέλος, η δύναμη της εξουσίας λιώνει τα ιδανικά και τα ιδεώδη και καταλήγουμε

"ο σώζων εαυτόν σωθήτω"

Καλή ανάγνωση σύντροφοι!!!

Eric Arthur Blair, better known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English author and journalist. His work is marked by keen intelligence and wit, a profound awareness of social injustice, an intense opposition to totalitarianism, a passion for clarity in language, and a belief in democratic socialism.

In addition to his literary career Orwell served as a a police officer with the Indian Imperia Eric Arthur Blair, better known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English author and journalist. His work is marked by keen intelligence and wit, a profound awareness of social injustice, an intense opposition to totalitarianism, a passion for clarity in language, and a belief in democratic socialism.

In addition to his literary career Orwell served as a a police officer with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma from 1922-1927 and fought with the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War from 1936-1937. Orwell was severely wounded when he was shot through his throat. Later the organization that he had joined when he joined the Republican cause,The Workers Party of Marxist Unification (POUM), was painted by the pro-Soviet Communists as a Trotskyist organization (Trotsky was Joseph Stalin's enemy) and disbanded. Orwell and his wife were accused of "rabid Trotskyism" and tried in absentia in Barcelona, along with other leaders of the POUM, in 1938. However by then they had escaped from Spain and returned to England.

Between 1941 and 1943, Orwell worked on propaganda for the BBC. In 1943, he became literary editor of the Tribune, a weekly left-wing magazine. He was a prolific polemical journalist, article writer, literary critic, reviewer, poet and writer of fiction, and, considered perhaps the twentieth century's best chronicler of English culture.

Orwell is best known for the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (published in 1949) and the satirical novella Animal Farm (1945) — they have together sold more copies than any two books by any other twentieth-century author. His 1938 book Homage to Catalonia, an account of his experiences as a volunteer on the Republican side during the Spanish Civil War, together with numerous essays on politics, literature, language, and culture, are widely acclaimed.

Orwell's influence on contemporary culture, popular and political, continues decades after his death. Several of his neologisms, along with the term "Orwellian" — now a byword for any oppressive or manipulative social phenomenon opposed to a free society — have entered the vernacular. ...more
