Windmill at Kinderdijk, Holland.
_ The windmills of Kinderdijk are amongst the best-known tourist sites of Holland._

Photo by Remo Scarf | https://goo.gl/lFkQbV

The legend of "The Cat and the Cradle"
Kinderdijk is Dutch for "Children dike". During the Saint Elizabeth flood of 1421, though the Grote Hollandse Waard flooded, the Alblasserwaard polder wasn’t.

When the terrible storm subsided, it is said someone went to the dike between these two areas, to see what could be saved. He saw a wooden cradle floating on the waters and a cat trying to balance it by jumping back and forth so that the water did not get in. When it came within his reach, he saw that a baby was quietly sleeping inside it, nice and dry. The cat had kept the cradle balanced and afloat. And so started the folk tale.

A stunning shot of traditional Dutch windmills in the Netherlands. Windmills and Holland are completely inseparable. They’ve been used for centuries to keep lowlands dry. Do you know when the oldest windmill was built – 8, 12 or 14th century?

The Lily Dutch Windmill - Stirling Range, Western Australia

You dont really see this type of windmill on the red dirt. They usually be somewhere like lush green background in Europe. But one in Western Australia. When I first saw this on some tourist book, I thought it was taken somewhere in Europe. When I found out it was close from where we are at the moment. I immediately went to see it.

WINDMILL BLADES POSE ENVIRONMENTAL, ENERGY, ENGINEERING CHALLENGE
Thousands of giant windmills are being constructed annually in the United States, creating a burgeoning environmental question: how will we handle the upcoming piles these behemoth 22,000-pound, 170-foot blades as they are decommissioned? Researchers at Washington State University are working with Seattle-based Global Fiberglass Solutions Inc. to find recycling and manufacturing solutions.

“Talk about clean energy – that’s enough garbage to really fill a landfill," said Karl Englund, a research associate professor at WSU’s Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture who has spent more than a decade finding innovative solutions for waste materials in the Composite Materials Engineering Center.

The trick to creating a successful recycling effort is to keep the process economical and simple, he said. Fancy thermal or chemical treatments, for instance, will raise the cost of recycling.

“If you’re going to use a bunch of chemicals or energy to make a product, it’s not going to be worth it,’’ he said. “Any added energy, labor and chemicals will significantly add costs to a material that is already considered a waste product."

The Dutch windmills used to be homes to the local farmers growing crops around the lakes in various parts of Netherlands. These tiny houses inside the windmills were quite sophisticated, with dining and kitchen downstairs along with parents room, and children room and playing area upstairs.

Windmills in Amsterdam

#Windmills are an iconic part of the #Dutch landscape, and a visit to one is a must for visitors to the Netherlands. And with eight windmills located in and around Amsterdam, windmill spotting is a great way to see the city.

Windmill spotting is a great way to explore Amsterdam, or head out of town to see a cluster of working mills.

WINDMILLS AND BIRDS - Bird fatalities from windmills now predictable via simple model
A simple model to predict bird fatalities at wind generating facilities uses readily available data and is intended for broad local application.

The model looks at only three parameters: hazardous footprint, bird exposure to turbines and collision probability.

“This simplicity is part of what makes the model accessible to others,” said Leslie New, a WSU Vancouver assistant professor of statistics, at  who led the research as a U.S. Geological Survey postdoctoral fellow.

Last light at the Tracy Windmill

Tracy windmill again, another perspective on this neat spot. 2 shot blend. The grasses here have just started turning yellow for the season, which makes me kind of sad. I love to see the green hills and the wildflowers.  But the yellow/summer season brings its own beauty too.

It's great to find these windmills just a couple of hours away from Manila. There are 27 of these 125meter high windmills at Pililia's Wind Farm.
