Kinderdijk would have flooded without the use of windmills years ago.
In 750 BC, Kinderdijk was a wild, swampy and uninhabitable region. The rivers surrounding it regularly overflow, flooding the entire area.

Before people can live here, a solution for the periodic floods had to be found. It was decided that digging ditches and diverting streams would allow water to flow away...

The most important aspect of Kinderdijk , a UNESCO World Heritage site is undoubtedly the unique collection of 19 authentic windmills, which are considered a Dutch icon throughout the entire world.

The legend of "The Cat and the Cradle"
Kinderdijk is Dutch for "Children dike". During the Saint Elizabeth flood of 1421, though the Grote Hollandse Waard flooded, the Alblasserwaard polder wasn’t.

When the terrible storm subsided, it is said someone went to the dike between these two areas, to see what could be saved. He saw a wooden cradle floating on the waters and a cat trying to balance it by jumping back and forth so that the water did not get in. When it came within his reach, he saw that a baby was quietly sleeping inside it, nice and dry. The cat had kept the cradle balanced and afloat. And so started the folk tale.

Kinderdijk is UNESCO world heritage listed monuments. One of the complete system remains showing the technologies developped by Dutch to drain the water from the land to the see throught the canals. Nowadays, the windmill are renovated and converted into the houses.

Kinderdijk is a village in the Netherlands, belonging to the municipality of Molenwaard, in the province South Holland, about 15 km east of Rotterdam. Kinderdijk is situated in a polder in the Alblasserwaard at the confluence of the Lek and Noord rivers. To drain the polder, a system of 19 windmills was built around 1740. This group of mills is the largest concentration of old windmills in the Netherlands. The windmills of Kinderdijk are one of the best known Dutch tourist sites. They have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

Kinderdijk, Netherlands

Perhaps one of the most photogenic of all the Dutch landscapes, Kinderdijk is only about an hour from Amsterdam and yet most tourists seem to give it a miss. No complaints here - I prefer it when it's quiet, especially in winter. There are nineteen windmills here and, if the sunset is any way decent and the water is still, you can step into a timeless world and appreciate the beautiful and enduring relationship the Dutch have with the wind and the water.

One of 17 windmills that's still standing at the Dutch countryside of Kinderdijk. The group of 17 mills is the largest concentration of old windmills in the Netherlands and one of the best known Dutch tourist sites. They were placed on the list of UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997.
