Donald #Trump Jr and long-term Trump aide Roger Stone face a heightened threat of criminal charges as Democrats on Capitol Hill prepare to hand evidence to #RobertMueller’s #Russia investigation. They could be charged with perjury if there is evidence that they lied to Congress during interviews behind closed doors with the House intelligence committee.

The California Democrat #AdamSchiff will take over leadership of the committee now that his party has control of the House, following victory in the midterm elections. Schiff made clear he would be handing over transcripts which had been withheld from Mueller’s investigation by Republicans when they controlled the panel. The committee staged 73 interviews with dozens of witnesses, including #JaredKushner, Trump Jr and Stone. So far, 33 people and three Russian organisations have been charged, convicted or have pleaded guilty in connection with Mueller’s investigation.

It's an investigation that’s led to dozens of indictments, seven guilty pleas and one conviction. Some of the president’s closest allies have been sentenced to jail, even after flipping on him and cooperating in lieu of leniency. Special counsel #RobertMueller is widely reported to be winding down his investigation into Russian influence in the 2016 election and could submit a report to the attorney general as early as February. It’s probable, the former prosecutors say, that #Mueller still has his sights set on individuals at the highest levels of the U.S. government: President Donald #Trump and his family.

The probe, which began on May 17, 2017, continues to churn out court documents and travel through the legal system. An offshoot investigation by the Southern District of New York even implicated the president in felony campaign finance violations regarding pre-election payments made to two women to buy their silence over alleged extramarital affairs.

Court documents, emails and testimony have shown that the president's son was willing to accept incriminating information on Clinton from the Russian government; that the president didn't tell the truth about his dealings with #Russia during the campaign; and, in a separate federal probe, that the president directed his lawyer to commit campaign finance crimes.

Three men who once sat in #Trump's inner sanctum - #MichaelCohen, #PaulManafort and MichaelFlynn - have been convicted or pleaded guilty to serious crimes and have cooperated, to varying degrees, with the investigation. After the election, #Mueller began speaking again through the courts on what seemed like a weekly basis. The news was relentless. Manafort's plea deal fell apart after Mueller accused him of lying, exposing him to a virtual life sentence and mystifying legal experts. Cohen pleaded guilty to lying to Congress about a Trump Tower project in Moscow, in the process putting a spotlight on the president's untruths about contacts with Russians.

An #impeachment process against President #Trump now seems inescapable. Unless the president resigns, the pressure by the public on the Democratic leaders to begin an impeachment process next year will only increase. A significant number of Republican candidates didn’t want to run with Mr. Trump in the midterms, and the results of those elections didn’t exactly strengthen his standing within his party. His political status, weak for some time, is now hurtling downhill.

Impeachment was the founders’ method of holding a president accountable between elections. Determined to avoid setting up a king in all but name, they put the decision about whether a president should be allowed to continue to serve in the hands of the representatives of the people who elected him. The current presidential crisis seems to have only two possible outcomes. If Mr. Trump sees criminal charges coming at him and members of his family, he may feel trapped. This would leave him the choice of resigning or trying to fight congressional removal. But the latter is highly risky. Republicans who were once Mr. Trump’s firm allies have already openly criticized some of his recent actions
