Flashback: Bob Corker in July on revoking security clearances. "When you're going to start taking retribution against people who are your political enemies ... that's the kind of thing that happens in Venezuela." "It's a banana republic kind of thing."

Smart piece by ⁦⁩ on how strongmen over reach. Turns out checks and balances along w independent institutions good not just for societies, economies and citizens but for leaders who do not grasp what is in their own long-term interest

I really do not see any way out other than a Trump-Erdogan summit that would provide cover and achieve limited results, stabilize the lira and release all the prisoners. What is needed is a move that will alter the current negative mindset.

The gravity of the crisis and the need to provide Turks with the time to calm markets and put their house in order… can only be achieved by a face-to-face meeting btw Trump and Erdoğan that will facilitate the release of Brunson and others. |

Fresh off the presses, ungated! 💃💃 My new article on Holocaust remembrance in East Europe. Come for ontological security theory, stay for me accusing Croatia of Holocaust denial.

All very True but 1) it’s very early 2) how popular RTe is not totally clear (not 50%+ probably. More like 30%+?) 3) even if he becomes unpopular not clear it matters anymore given recent election

Sober summary of ’s crisis. To me, the bottom line is the total incompatibility between a) the needs of a structural-deficit economy, b) a one-man-rule system [loyalty/family prevail over competence; freedoms gone; wrong eco concepts; conspiracy theories as sole explainer]

Turkish prosecutors are now in pursuit of social media users that "manipulate" public perceptions on the current currency crisis, meaning, "Making comments about the economy, except official statements, are also forbidden now," an opposition deputy says. via

This is how twisted the thinking has become. They’re actually discussing whether a murderous despot bent on undermining our democracy, breaking up the Western alliance and killing his critics is not as bad as Robert Mueller. This is televised pollution—and toxic for the nation.
