William Carter originally founded The William Carter Company out of his Massachusetts home after he had left England. He made knitted goods for adults and children. The company didn’t shift to focusing exclusively on children’s apparel for nearly a century (long after William Carter had died). The Carter family sold the business in 1990 and it is now a publicly traded company on the NYSE.
