No Enter Key For the love of God, it's 2016 and we still don't have an option to either have the enter key or the emoji key on the keyboard. This is the only app that I have that overrides the default Google keyboard. Unless I want to use a 3rd party keyboard app... which I don't, I really like the default google keyboard app... it's just so infuriating that I can't send with an enter key. Please Google, please fix this, just give me a simple option in the settings for send on enter key. Besides that, I love the app.
Does well. My only issue with the app is that I notice it seems to activate my camera randomly. I don't know if it is the actual camera specifically but the little red light next to it. Every time in does this I must restart my phone in order to get it to turn off. If it is some sort of spyware Shame, Shame. That would be a good way to lose customers. If it is a legitimate bug or glitch I don't know what it could possibly be. But I really don't like the idea that my camera or my microphone could be turned on remotely.
Realiably unreliable It often just pretends to work but nothing is happening on the other side. Messages keep diapering, calls crash regularly. On some devices it refuses to work unless updated, but also refuses to update even when reinstalled. By far not reliable enough to even consider as primary means if communication.
I have a message being sent but it's frozen I sent a message 2 weeks ago and it's says "sending.". ive tried to uninstall and reinstall and have the same problem.also i wanted to have the hangout icon back on my phone for easy access to my texts,but when i used the one left on the phone when i first install this app it says that it not (the icon) used anymore.i have to wait for my friends to send me a message before i can reply.it's so annoying please fix both problems.
No more Widget after update A warning that the widget would no longer be availble would have been nice. It sucks going to a home screen and seeing an error, then going to the widget drawer and seeing the widget there with the same error. Bring back the widget!!! Besides that I like having my number on multiple devices. Weather I grab my Android or iPhone or sitting on the computer I can continue the same chat.
UI & Customization Dark Theme and more color options. Options to change contact photos to initials and hide the timestamps. Please bring back the gesture that takes you back to the conversation list by swiping from the left edge. "Write a message" area is too cluttered, make it simplistic with a + sign. Replace visible phone number with the name of the contact in "Send SMS to..."
What happened to snooze notifications? Great app but need to be able to set snooze notifications, or set an interval for how often you get notifications. If you are in a large group chat and a bunch of people are talking it can be extremely annoying getting a notification for each message, but i dont want to have to go in and completely turn notifications off. At one point you were able to snooze notifications. Where did that go?
what's up with you Google! it's bad enough Android phones are fragmented with different versions of Android. but now the apps themselves are fragmented..... why do you have 2 messaging apps? why was the widget disabled for hangouts? and why don't you just make one proprietary messaging app and integrate video chat, messaging, and call into one (which could be hangouts) app ? ..... people love iOS for imessage and facetime let's make the Google version!
Ok, worse than others Better than prior versions (fewer and shorter lags, almost no failed sends), but still scant features and relatively large size. Now, a bug closes and then reopens the stock keyboard while swiping. I haven't used the video feature in over a year. It was so atrocious, nobody would ever use it, and I sure wasn't going to convince them otherwise.
Forced update causes constant restarts The app used to run perfectly smooth on my phones, and worked cleanly. It works well on my Droid Turbo except for one major issue- frequent random app crashes/restarts. I'll be typing like normal and halfway through it will crash and restart and I have to type everything all over. Sometimes it will happen twice before I can send a message! Now I can't even revert back to a stable version because I was forced to update to 8.0!
Needs Improvements I'm currently using the Google Nexus 5X and I use Hangouts as my main SMS & Chat w/ friends. The app sometimes has trouble loading pictures, it'll slow or freeze at times. Very laggy and slow when switching between conversations. And w/ occasional crashes. I'm hoping for an update soon to fix most of the issues. I don't want to have to switch to a different SMS app because I use Hangouts to chat w/ friends as well, I want it all under the same app.
Still lots of bugs Video/voice calls are OK, a bit buggy sometimes (calls dropping on good connections, app freezing, heavy delays, hanging up doesn't work that well, etc.) , which causes frustration for everyone. SMS and data messages work pretty well. Lacks some features that a dedicated SMS app would have.
It's good but could be better I like it, I use it a lot, but ther is one thing that could make it better an is the voice messege that could totally make it my first option on messaging also being able to share documents could be a Plus, but for me the most important feature that is missing is definitely the voice message.
OK Feature Set, Sometimes Unstable (Nexus 5 / CM13) Since Google voice integration, the app has been updated to material design. When it works, it works quite well. I love the merged SMS/chat interface, and the ability to see voicemails in-app. Overall quite nice. Most of my complaints about stability have been addressed, but it still has occasional issues.
Texting Come on. You can't blame the app for annoying notifications. For Pete's sake, notifications only come if someone texts you, so there's no one to blame but your friends, or YOU for not silencing the phone. I love to text my friends on this because I don't have a phone and I can actually text people! Plus, it shows when your people are online, and when they are in the process of responding. Awesome. I wish it didn't require Wi-Fi, though.
Crashy, buggy, slow, but amazing cross platform features through Project Fi App is slow, frequently crashes, has to reboot often and fails to send texts on occasion. Also dramatically compressed MMS messages that you send for some weird amount of time until they look OK. Been on Project Fi for 3 months a LOVING it, but evey time I consider leaving for a conventional carrier, it's because of the Hangouts app. I COULD switch back to Messenger, but then I lose most of the stuff that makes Fi truly special.
WTF? Google broke the Hangouts widget in an update last year, but uninstalling the updates restored Hangouts. Until now. Now, somehow, Google's broken the working old Hangouts widget, replacing the useful list of conversations with a pop-up saying "Update is now required". Yet, after "update", the widget's disabled again. WTF?
