The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 was adopted by UN Member States on 18 March 2015 at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. The Sendai Framework thus became the first major agreement of the post-2015 global development agenda.
The Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015: Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disasters provided a clear set of critical tasks to be undertaken at the national, regional and international levels to achieve a substantial reduction in disaster losses. It focused on five areas: ensuring that DRR is a national and local priority; identifying disaster risks and enhance early warning; promote use of knowledge, innovation and education; reducing underlying risk factors; and strengthening preparedness for effective response.
The UN General Assembly convened the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan to review the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action and adopt its post-2015 successor, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
The biennial Global Platform, launched in 2007, is world's foremost gathering on reducing disaster risk and building the resilience of communities and nations. The fifth edition, the first of the Sendai Framework era, will take place from 22 to 26 May this year in Cancun, Mexico.
Regional platforms are multi-stakeholder forums that reflect the commitment of governments to improve coordination and implementation of disaster risk reduction activities while linking to international and national efforts.
National Platforms are nationally owned and led multi-stakeholder forums or committees working on disaster risk reduction. They reflect the commitment of a country’s government to implement national and local disaster risk reduction activities while linking with international efforts.
UNISDR works through the UN Development Group to make disaster risk reduction a priority for the UN system and its organizations, based on the UN Plan of Action on Disaster Risk Reduction for Resilience endorsed by the UN System Chief Executives' Board for Coordination.
