Ukraine’s Jamala Wins Eurovision Song Contest

Winning composition had stirred controversy with Russian officials, who complained of political subtext

STOCKHOLM—Eurovision, Europe’s song contest where national flags matter as much as melodies, has crowned a singer with a voice—and a message: Ukraine’s Jamala.

The singer won the 61st edition of the music competition, in which singers from across the continent perform in front of a television audience of about 200 million.

Jamala garnered 534 points, aggregated from popular and jury votes, to win with a song titled “1944.”...
