Stranger Things characters become Peanuts in new take on A Charlie Brown Christmas

Since Stranger Things debuted this summer, it’s received the 8-bit treatment, been turned into a short romantic comedy and parodied by Saturday Night Live. In a new video, the cast of the ‘80s-inspired sci-fi series have now been turned into Peanuts. A Stranger Things Christmas, created by filmmakers Leigh Lahav and Oren Mendez, reimagines the characters from Stranger Things as Charlie Brown and the gang during A Charlie Brown Christmas. The short film follows Will Byers, who has come back from the Upside Down, and is trying to get into the Christmas spirit but just can’t seem to. He talks to his friends and other locals from the neighborhood, including Eleven, Steve Harrington and Lucas, but no one seems to be able to help him. The short film pays homage to some of the best Charlie...

Netflix in November: Everything that’s coming and going

Netflix is making a push for original content, and November is full of original and exclusive series from the streaming service. That includes one of Netflix’s most anticipated shows, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Although Gilmore Girls itself isn’t an original series for the company, the four-part mini-series is being touted as much. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life reunites the cast of the CW’s original series and will follow Rory (Alexis Bledel) and her mom Lorelai (Lauren Graham) over the course of a year in their hometown of Stars Hollow, Connecticut. Practically everyone involved in the original production has returned for the sequel mini-series, with a few notable exceptions including Melissa McCarthy. Other original series, like The Crown, will also debut in November....

Stranger Things video explainer looks at the show’s tributes to Jaws, Close Encounters

It’s no secret that Netflix’s sci-fi series Stranger Things pays homage to some of the most classic genre films of the 1980s. In a new video explainer, the show gets broken down almost scene by scene to examine just how much of an influence author Stephen King and director Steven Spielberg had on creators Matt and Ross Duffer. As YouTuber Newfangled points out, there are homages paid to classic Spielberg films including Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. There’s an officer who takes a job in a smaller town to escape the stresses of big city life, a parent that becomes obsessed with the supernatural, and perhaps most obvious, there’s the use of Indiana as a setting. The video goes a little further, however, and talks about the similarities between Super 8, J.J. Abrams’ film...

Fast & Furious 6 director Justin Lin’s production company, YOMYOMF, is partnering with Machinima to reboot Knight Rider as a digital series, the company announced today. The digital series is expected to launch in 2017 with Justin Lin helming the production. YouTube may get live CBS programming for its new TV service, Unplugged, next year

Like Hulu and HBO Now, Google is looking to get into the business of live television, targeting a generation of people looking to cut the cord to traditional cable television. In May, Bloomberg reported that Google was looking to use YouTube as a way to offer live television packages, and now the Wall Street Journal has confirmed that the company has reached an agreement with CBS to carry some of the network’s live programming as early as next year. Most important, however, is that YouTube would be able to provide live programming of CBS-owned channels. One of those channels is the popular CW, which carries series like The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, but it’s unclear if the CW will be a part of the skinny bundle CBS offers. Netflix and the CW...

Netflix is about to be $3 billion in debt in order to make more original series, films

Netflix is already $2.37 billion in debt, but the company announced today in a press release that it was raising another $800 million through a new debt offering in order for the streaming service to create more original content. Once the funds are raised, Netflix’s total debt will be more than $3 billion, but that shouldn’t be too alarming considering the companies plan for rapid growth. Netflix’s CEO Ted Sarandos previously said that the company was going to spend $6 billion on creating more original series and films, with a portion of that number being spent on acquiring other content and signing more exclusive deals. Sarandos added that the company wants to move to having about 50 percent of its catalog being original content, and while that may seem risky, new statistics show...

What AT&T’s $85 billion acquisition of Time Warner could mean for streaming's future

On Saturday, AT&T announced it was acquiring Time Warner today for $85.4 billion, giving the telecommunications conglomerate ownership over all of its subsidiaries, including film studio Warner Bros., game developer Warner Bros. Interactive. and networks like CNN and HBO. The $85.4 billion acquisition marks the largest deal of the year, but the bigger question is what that means for AT&T and Time Warner subscribers. Similar questions about a merger of this size and what it meant for consumers popped up in 2011 when Comcast purchased a 51 percent stake in NBC Universal for $13.75 billion, and again in 2013 when Comcast purchased the remaining 49 percent for $16.7 billion from General Electric. Both Comcast Ventures and NBCUniversal are investors in Polygon’s parent company, Vox Media. B...

Watch The Walking Dead’s season 7 premiere online right now

Last night’s season seven premiere of The Walking Dead answered one of the biggest questions that fans have had since the season six finale a couple of months ago: Who did Negan kill? Like any good premiere, there were a couple of other big surprises and moments that caught us off guard, and was generally one of the best premieres the show’s had. In an attempt to get everyone in on the conversation, AMC has uploaded the episode to its website for all to watch. Those who are interested in catching the premiere but don’t subscribe to the network can watch it for free for a limited time. AMC hasn’t said if it’s planning to do this with other episodes, but the move isn’t new or unique to the network. HBO often uploads the first episode of its biggest series, including Game of Thrones and W...

Scream Queens uses school and femininity as horror, like Mean Girls did for comedy

Welcome to Polygon's 13 Days of Halloween series! Between Oct. 19 and Oct. 31, Polygon will publish 13 opinion pieces about different films, shows and specials that exemplify what Halloween means to us. Whether that's the scariest movies you haven't seen yet or a look at a popular Treehouse of Horror episode, this is our tribute to the world of the strange, creepy and downright horrifying that exists within popular culture. The beauty of Scream Queens isn’t its attempt to bridge horror and comedy, but its adamance and commitment to satirizing genre films of the 1980s and the Greek system (otherwise known as fraternities and sororities) in America. Scream Queens isn’t a perfect show by a long shot. The direction is sorely lacking and the plot is often contrived, but even with its...

Reddit has already figured out parts of Stranger Things’ second season

When Netflix announced that Stranger Things had been renewed for a second season at the end of August, the teaser trailer they released alongside it was quickly picked up by fans. The video contained what appeared to be episode titles for the new season, and now the show’s creators have confirmed that a couple have figured it out. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Matt and Ross Duffer admitted that Netflix had renewed their show for a second season before the first had even premiered. As such, they began writing the second season while people were watching the first and were able to try and figure out where the mythology was headed enough so that when it came to teasing it, they could have fun with it. Iron Fist’s Finn Jones addresses the show’s cultural appropriation accusations

When Marvel and Netflix announced that it would be bringing Iron Fist to the small screen, fans of the original comic book series were both excited about having the hero in the extended universe and nervous about who would play the hero, Danny Rand. Earlier this year, the companies announced that Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones would be Iron Fist, and fans quickly posted their disappointed thoughts online. At New York Comic Con this past weekend, ComicBook.com asked Jones was asked about the concern fans had over the cultural appropriation of the character, and whether he shared those concerns. Jones said that he understood where fans were coming from, but added it was too early for judgement to be made on the show. "We're working with Netflix and Marvel, two of the most leading...

Marvel's head of TV, Jeph Loeb, announced today that Sigourney Weaver would be playing the main villain in the Defenders series. Loeb didn't say who Weaver would be playing, but there's still some time before the series premieres on Netflix. Iron Fist and Punisher are both set to premiere next year, with the Defenders possibly being pushed back to 2018. Earlier this summer, Netflix said it didn't want to have three Marvel series on in one year in an attempt to space out its line of superhero programming.
