Game of Thrones sucks at killing characters, is great at killing time

Spoiler alert! This recap is intended for folks who've already seen the episode, and will include a description of its events! Welcome to my favorite kind of episode, the "Game of Thrones needs to buy itself a bit of time because this story is stretched out to hell" hour. I'm not saying this was a bad hour of television — it had its moments — but no one involved with Game of Thrones has any reason to deliver a tight narrative. Everyone is watching the show. Everyone is buying the books. We're going to get a few episodes where a self-contained loop closes, and a character is back on the path they should have been on hours ago. But alas. This was never a series that believed in brevity, in any format. This hour seemed content to deflate much of the tension that had been built up...

Game of Thrones brings back another fan favorite, as the fist tightens

Spoiler alert! This recap is intended for folks who've already seen the episode, and will include a description of its events! So death is now officially meaningless in Game of Thrones. It's not just that Benjen Stark came back, or that Jon Snow came back and now The Hound; the problem is that no death seems final anymore. Is there any doubt that Hodor isn't going to come back as a wight or something worse? Or something better? It feels like Ned is only kept dead because he was beheaded back when the show pretended that death was final. It's long since become a door that can swing both ways. Whom do you think will be the next character who returns from the dead? But hey, cold open! That's pretty fun, right? I actually stopped HBO Now for a moment to make sure I clicked on the...

Steven Universe's new episode streak doesn't quite end with a home run

Spoiler alert! This recap is intended for folks who've already seen the episode, and will include a description of its events! Steven Universe's fifth of five new episodes continues to slow down the pace, following the more introspective episodes of the past two or three weeks. Tonight's final installment — at least, for the time being — isn't quite filler, but it comes close. Thankfully, even the less plot-driven adventures on Steven Universe are worth watching. The Crystal Gems revolutionize America's pasttime in "Hit the Diamond" "Hit the Diamond" picks up right where "Barn Mates" left off, revealing that the leering Ruby that crash landed on the Gems' property isn't alone. She's, in fact, one of five identical Rubies, and Peridot's convinced that they were sent to Earth to...

Game of Thrones brings a surprise back from the 'dead,' and it's not the one you think

Spoiler alert! This recap is intended for folks who've already seen the episode, and will include a description of its events! There is this whole trope from genre fiction about the mysterious survivor who knows what the hell is up with the bad guys. They have a hidey-hole that they've fortified. They know how to kill the powerful bad guys. And they often sweep in at the exact right moment to save our heroes. Game of Thrones has been leaning hard into fantasy tropes lately — if the battle between wood sprites and zombies in the mystical tree didn't clue you in last week — and the opening of last night's episode was a situation in which Bran and Meera's survival hinged on the timely introduction of a masked badass who seems to have some pretty effective arcane knowledge of the...

Steven Universe makes even the most familiar plots worth revisiting in this week's episode

Spoiler alert! This recap is intended for folks who've already seen the episode, and will include a description of its events! Like any kids show — or any show, really — Steven Universe often falls victim to repeat plots. Tonight's episode feels like a retread, only swapping out one Gem for another. But that character change is significant and helps to enliven an otherwise familiar plot. Lapis and Peridot don't make for the best "Barn Mates" The premise of "Barn Mates" might remind viewers of several episodes back, when Peridot first ended up in the Crystal Gems' camp. Lapis Lazuli, after last week's events, finds herself sharing a bunk with the tiny green Gem, much to her chagrin. Peridot doesn't feel the same way, though. She opens the episode by detailing how excited she is...

Steven Universe wants us to see the world through Steven's eyes in a quieter episode

Spoiler alert! This recap is intended for folks who've already seen the episode, and will include a description of its events! Steven Universe is the kind of cartoon that embraces its childlike qualities — and "Same Old World" is a perfect example of why that's one of the best things about it. This week's installment is a whole lot quieter than last week's double feature, trading in the fight scenes for a focus on Steven's boyish innocence. "Same Old World" is a somber joyride That shift is apparent from the get-go, as we drop in on an excited Peridot recounting Steven and her battle against the Cluster from the previous episode. It's a boastful and not especially good recap — try ours for a clearer picture of what went down last week! — and Steven is clearly disinterested....

Last night The Flash was born again, and it's driving everyone nuts

Spoiler alert! This recap is intended for folks who've already seen the episode, and will include a description of its events! CW's The Flash was up to its old tricks again last night. It shrugged off the success of Kevin Smith's heartfelt, almost leisurely episode last week in order to once again try and cram in enough plot points for three regular shows. The result was a return to the uneven, awkward experience that's become a running theme this season. The evening began with the most disappointing hand-waves in the series' short history. Remember that teeming throng of metahumans bent on Central City's destruction? Yeah, well they were given all of 30 seconds on screen before Flash zipped in to snatch them all up in an instant. In the beginning the scene had such promise....

Game of Thrones delivers a stunning episode that moves the entire story forward

Spoiler alert! This recap is intended for folks who've already seen the episode, and will include a description of its events! That is a pretty great way to start an episode of Game of Thrones. Sansa and Jon embracing and sharing memories of home was a warm spot in a show that has lately seemed like it's trying to punish the viewer. The question is what comes after the two Starks are reintroduced to either. Sansa may be ready to take back Winterfell, but Jon sounds like he's given up. You can't blame him. As he says, he swore his life and gave it. He has fought, he has killed and he has died. He was murdered for his attempts to protect everything he knows from the White Walkers, and he doesn't have a lot of hope that he can do much good anymore. If no one is willing to listen...

Steven Universe shows Peridot's sensitive side in action-packed two-part premiere

Spoiler alert! This recap is intended for folks who've already seen the episode, and will include a description of its events! It feels like it's been forever since we were treated to a new episode of Steven Universe — and the first half of tonight's double premieres, "Super Watermelon Island," doesn't quite feel like the return we were expecting. Things get real, real weird in "Super Watermelon Island" Instead of a reunion with Steven, Peridot and the rest of the Crystal Gems, we're dropped right onto Mask Island, where some silent anthropomorphic watermelons go about their day-to-day. (You may remember them from "Watermelon Steven," an episode from way back in season one.) There's some other weirdness at play here in this opening scene, too: The watermelons participate in...

Game of Thrones tackles death, the return of a major character and farts in a strong episode

Spoiler alert! This recap is intended for folks who've already seen the episode, and will include a description of its events! Jon Snow saw nothing after death. But some force more powerful than death itself brought him back. It's hard to square those two thoughts. Clearly there's something going on beyond the mortal coil, but what that might be remains obscured. We see through a glass darkly. "I did what I thought was right. Then I got murdered for it. Now I'm back. Why?" Jon Snow asked, in a bit of dialog that was maybe a bit too on the nose. Davos isn't really interested in that question, much less the answer. What's important is that Snow is back, and he must pick up the fight where he left it. He accepts the magic he sees with his own eyes with only a small bit of shock and...
