Dragon Ball Super is another continuation of the
Dragon Ball manga, taking place after the Majin Buu Saga but before the manga's
Distant Finale. It is
Anime First, with its plot framework and character designs handled by
Akira Toriyama. The series started airing on July 5, 2015 in Japan.
Super begins with a retelling of the events of
Battle Of Gods and
Resurrection ‘F’, comprising the first twenty-seven episodes, before moving to a new story where Goku and the others must search for the Super Dragon Balls to participate in a tournament between universes to determine who acquires the Earth of Goku's world.
There are two separate English dubs, similar to how
Dragon Ball Z had dubs by both
FUNimation and
The Ocean Group.
FUNimation's dub is airing on
Toonami in the United States, just as their dubs of previous series have. Meanwhile,
Bang Zoom! Entertainment has dubbed
Super for Asian markets; it is currently airing on the
Toonami channel in Asia. Official subs are available for simulcast on
Crunchyroll, Daisuki, and AnimeLab.
A manga adaptation is being serialized monthly in
V-Jump, written by Toriyama and drawn by Toyotarō, who previously created the
Dragonball Heroes spin-off manga
Victory Mission. As
Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ was adapted in
V-Jump just prior to the start of
Super, the manga skips from the Battle of Gods arc to the Champa arc.
Not to be confused with
Super Dragon Ball Z, a video game made by Bandai Namco and published by Atari in the US, or
Dragon Ball Super Z, an old,
old series of fanfics about Future Trunks' timeline post-series.
