"My ultimate goal as an artist is to give Indian culture back the humanity that has been taken from it by stereotypes created over the past five centuries. Neither the super-shaman nor the drunken-Indian do anything to convey what we as a people feel. In my work, I look for the unconventional beauty one finds only in TRUTHS. It celebrates, it mourns and it outshines all else.

I feel that craftsmanship is the highest of virtues. It conveys pride, respect and authority. I have no chosen or recognizable visual style. My style is in the approach. I believe all things have the potential to teach. I create art work that in turn teaches me.

I create artwork that I think my people could respond to something to make them think and remember who we are.

I also create for the sole purpose of creating.

My wife says I’m a real jerk when I don’t spend time in the studio. I’m a California Indian-part traditionalist, part Disneyland.

I want my work to express the passion, pain, and reverence I feel as a contemporary Native person."

The Cahuilla Band of Indians are Mountain Cahuilla (Qawishpa Cahuillangnah), one of the original peoples of Southern California. The Mountain Cahuilla lived in the high mountain valleys and canyons, running up from the Coachella Valley, San Gorgonio Pass, and San Jacinto Mountains region of Southern California. Cahuilla history in stories and songs tells how the Cahuilla were given these lands as their homeland since the beginning of time by their Creator. The Cahuilla reservation of approximately 20,000 acres of Trust Land was established in 1875 and is located near Anza, California in what is now western Riverside County.

The Cahuilla Band of Indians exercises its authority as a sovereign nation in order to provide for the welfare of its community of Members and future generations. The Tribal Government consists of the General Council and an elected five Member Tribal Council who represents Tribal matters. The Tribe seeks economic self- sufficiency in order to support social and economic wellbeing of its Tribal Members.

The Cahuilla language is in the Uto-Aztecan family. A 1990 census revealed 35 speakers in an ethnic population of 800. It is critically endangered, since most speakers are middle-aged or older. In their own language, their autonym is ʔívil̃uqaletem, and the name of their language is ʔívil̃uʔat (Ivilyuat), however they also call themselves táxliswet meaning 'person'. Cahuilla is an exonym applied to the group after mission secularization in the Ranchos of California. The word "Cahuilla" is probably from the Ivilyuat word kawi'a, meaning "master."

Oral legends suggest that when the Cahuilla first moved into the Coachella Valley, a large body of water which geographers call Lake Cahuilla was in existence. Fed by the Colorado River, it dried up sometime before 1700, following one of the repeated shifts in the river's course. In 1905 a break in a levee created the much smaller Salton Sea in the same location.

The Cahuilla lived from the land by using native plants. A notable tree whose fruits they harvested is the California fan palm. The Cahuilla also used palm leaves for basketry of many shapes, sizes and purposes; sandals, and roofing thatch for dwellings. The Cahuilla lived in smaller groups than some other tribes.

The first encounter with Europeans was in 1774, when Juan Bautista de Anza was looking for a trade route between Sonora and Monterey in Alta California. Living far inland, the Cahuilla had little contact with Spanish soldiers, priests, or missionaries. Many of the Europeans viewed the desert as having little or no value, but rather a place to avoid.
