"Frozen Wasteland"

February had turned mild, but March arrived with a burst of deep cold (-30 C without windchill this morning). The mild period had melted a lot of the snow off the Ottawa River, exposing the ice beneath. The cold wind has scoured the surface of the river, leaving textured areas that look like the surface of the moon. A frost has hit the far share, leaving everything with that uniquely beautiful (and very cold) look. Overall this is a cold image - appropriate for this frozen wasteland. This is my first share from the litte Voigtländer Ultron 40mm f/2 SL-II pancake lens and is a combination of four portrait oriented frames stitched together. "Pristine" (Zeiss Otus 1.4/28mm Review)

My newest review is of a lens that is both off most all photographer's radar and definitely outside their budget, but the Zeiss Otus 28mm f/1.4 APO Distagon T* is a serious, serious performer. It delivers image quality that I have to charactize as pristine, and it is essentially impossible to share images on the internet that do justice to the amount of detail it can render. I shot this image up on the top of Mont Tremblant where the trees are deeply buried in snow and frost. "Meet Cherokee"

My youngest boy has been home from school sick this week, but fortunatley for him he has a new friend - our new Bengal kitten named Cherokee. Cherokee loves to cuddle, loves to play, and loves to do kitten stuff - just the thing for a nine year boy stuck at home. Here's a picture of the two of them cuddled up together. Bengals are a domesticated breed that comes from the Asian Leapord cat and thus retain markings and athleticism similar to their wild cousins.

"Your Move"

I found this amazing chess board while shooting the Gold Lounge in the Fairmont Tremblant. It's the little details like this that I love. This beautifully crafted chess board with wonderful window light streaming over it was the true gold on that level for a photographer. There's something wonderfully evocative about the familiar shapes of the chess pieces, and perhaps some of you have subconsciously started planning your moves just seeing the board! P.S. The Canon 35L II is expensive (probably too expensive), but shots like this remind me of why I was willing to spend the money to get it. What a special lens!

"Hit the Slopes"

I found a vantage point I liked at the summit of Mont Tremblant to catch some skiers heading down one of the 96 different runs at Mont Tremblant. I love the way the trees are just buried in snow at higher altitudes and the view into the valley beyond. "After Dinner Tea"

Lana and I enjoyed some great meals during out visit to the Fairmont Tremblant last weekend. Since I was there officially to take pictures anyway, it was only natural (even expected) for me to bring a camera to the table. I took this photo after a meal in the Nansen lounge as we enjoyed our after dinner tea. There's something about the warm light in a restaurant that makes for a great photo, and I'm partial to what the Tamron 45mm f/1.8 VC does in that kind of setting. I'm also partial to the lady in the photo who I'm enjoying spending my life with!

"Choose Your Own Adventure"

One of the things I find most amazing about the Fairmont in Tremblant is how they manage to keep their large outdoor pool and hot tub complex going all winter. It's almost startling to see people in bikinis and heavy ski gear at the same time. I'm reminded of the books around when I was a child called "Choose Your Own Adventure". You could make choices throughout the book of where to go to read depending on the outcome you wanted. That's what a stay at the Fairmont Tremblant is like. Soak up some rays in the pool or fly down the mountain on your skis...or both! You can see from this photo the absolutely incredible amount of detail the Otus 28mm f/1.4 is capable of resolving. It's really quite amazing - at a pixel level you can make out most all of the faces in this photo. "A Winter Dream" (Fairmont Tremblant)

This last weekend I had an opportunity to do a new type of photography (for me). I was hired by the storied Fairmont Hotels brand to come and shoot fresh branding photography for their Tremblant location, which is the jewel of the Mont Tremblant ski resort which is consistently the top rated ski resort in the Northeast. Lana and I had a great time, and I got a lot of photos that I'm proud of. I've always loved Mont Tremblant, and I believe this is the sixth time I've visited there. Although I took a load of high end glass for the trip, I actually shot this one with my tiny little Voigtländer 20mm f/3.5 "pancake" prime, which sharpens up nicely when stopped down. The Fairmont is on the right, with the pedestrian village at the base of the mountain on the left. The light is often magical in Tremblant, and this shot is proof.
