Behind the Mask

For most of my life
I've been afraid of being hurt more
Than I was afraid I could endure

So behind the ever-smiling eyes
That have completed my disguise

I've been afraid of being hurt more
Than I've ever been hurt before

So I've hidden my fear and denied my pain
Scared that I'd be hurt again

But it didn't stop me being afraid
And it didn't take away the shame
Of not being true to myself

ear-modulated inner breathings
stirred captive silent dancing raindrops
tapping on the windows of my mind
