Sakari Maaranen: Although I do not have a strong opinion on this, as I believe every sovereign country can make their own rules, my personal mild preference is citizenship by blood relation OR long term residence. Blood relation would count over a generation or two, so I would allow the grandchildren of a citizen to return to become citizens even if their parents had different citizenship status. I would also grant citizenship to anyone who has participated at least eight years in the society, studying, working, running a business, etc. However, I agree with Trump that birth location alone should not be grounds for citizenship. Otherwise people could accidentally get the wrong citizenship, for example if an American mother was expecting while on a short visit to Mexico and happened to deliver a bit early, the kid would become a Mexican, if it happened on that side of the border. That would be funny. Now, this is not a strong opinion. Let Americans decide their own rules. Even if I agreed with Trump on this one I do not agree that the POTUS or any one person should get to decide matters like these. It should be a constitutional decision.

A child born in Canada does not impart citizenship to its parents. The parents can apply for permanent residence, which focus on work skills and education, the citizenship of the child has no relevance. This is to discourage birth tourism.

A lot of people don’t know they are Canadians. Ted Cruz was born in Calgary and found out he is Canadian when he ran for president in 2016.
