Deciding what computer filter to get is an important decision. Let's discuss some factors that will make it easier to decide.
Desktop or Laptop?
If you have a laptop computer you need to get filtering software that will be installed on the computer itself. This way no matter where you take your computer, you will be remain protected.
If you have a desktop computer that has Wi-Fi, it should also be treated like a laptop and have a filter installed on the computer itself. This way, even if you (or someone in your home) connects to a neighbor's unfiltered internet Wi-Fi, you will still be protected. Even computers without Wi-Fi can sometimes connect to Wi-Fi with a Wi-Fi antenna that connects to the USB drive.
However, if Wi-Fi is not a concern, then you can benefit from using Kosher Internet solutions that will filter all the computers in the home or office. This type of filter has an added benefit, that any devices using your network will be filtered as well - automatically. Even guest using your internet service will be filtered as well.
Many filters especially in Israel have an option for both these functions to operate in one package. The Network is filtered and additional software is installed on the computer to route all internet through your personal network.
This is obviously an ideal filtering setup where both your computer and network is protected. Whenever possible choose this option.
Level of protection?
Different filters offer different levels of protection. Better filters offer protection within sites such as blocking offensive pictures or material within sites which are otherwise suitable (important on many shopping or news sites). They are also far more adaptable for your personal requirements. Some filters are also purposely designed for the frum community and are much better suited to protect our more sensitive requirements.
If internet is not required you may wish to consider blocking or removing the ability to connect to the internet altogether. Options also exist to allow access only to email or to a specific whitelist of sites.
Some filters will only remove sites which are marked 18+. Please note though that much offensive material leak through such filters as they are scattered throughout the web including in sites which are not officially marked as 18+.
