    UMass Amherst has a proud tradition of research and undergraduate/graduate teaching (B.A., M.A., & PhD) in German & Scandinavian Studies. Our interdisciplinary strengths include: Black German Studies; Cultural Studies; Film Studies; Gender and Sexuality Studies; German-Jewish Studies; GDR & DEFA Film Studies; Holocaust Studies; Intellectual History; Medieval Studies; Minority Studies; STEM German; Theater and Performance Studies; Transnationalism; and Turkish German Studies.

  • Major in German

    Our undergraduate program is structured to set the study of the Germanic languages and their literatures within the contexts of their respective cultures, including their historical, economic, political, philosophical, and cultural aspects. Strong interdisciplinary ties with other departments are encouraged, including STEM fields.

  • iSTEP: international Science Technology and Engineering Programs

    iSTEP combines students' interests in German and STEM fields. With iSTEP students can take STEM-German language courses and participate in international education opportunities.
