5SOS Imagine: A Little Early, A Little Late (Michael Father's Day Imagine)

“Come on Michael, we we’re supposed to be at your parents house twenty minutes ago. The food is gonna be cold and everyone is going to be ready to get out of the pool by the time we get there.” You whined from the door way of your bedroom.

“Do you need me to bring you an umbrella for shade? Do you have plenty of sunscreen? Should we bring the bag? We should bring the bag.” Michael walked around frantically grabbing things and shoving them in the bag.

You only giggled and ran your hand over your enormously pregnant stomach. “Babe, I’m fine we have everything we need.”

Michael hurriedly put another outfit of yours into the bag and made his way over to you. He grinned and rubbed your tummy before kneeling down to kiss it, then picked himself up and placed another kiss to your lips. “Okay, ready.”

Just as the two of you pulled into Michael’s family home, a weird pulling pain occurred in your lower abdomen. Almost like period cramps. Your face screwed up and your hands held your stomach.

“What is it? Are you okay, baby?” Michaels eyes were wide as he unbuckled his seat belt and turned to you. You nodded your head.

“Fine, I guess she’s just moving around. Now come on, I’m ready for some steak.” You smiled at him to reassure him but he only gave you a wary look and nodded in return.

He had gotten everything out of the vehicle and you had just knocked on the door when you felt it again then, something else happened.

“Hi mum!” Michael greeted as Karen opened the door, but before she could reply you put your hand on Michael’s shoulder.

“Back in the car, let’s get back in the car.” You mumbled walking back towards the vehicle.

With confused looks adorning their faces your husband and mother-in-law watched as you waddled.

Realizing they weren’t following, you turned back. “My water just broke, we need to go to the hospital.” You answered their silent questioning, surprisingly calm.

Of course, Michael was anxious enough for the both of you. He dropped everything and started panicking.

“What, now? No it’s to soon! What do I need to do? What- where, do we need anything? Do you- do we? Holy shit, this is happening. Holy shit.”

“Michael, Michael chill. I’m not even having contractions yet, and I would like to be at the hospital when they do come. So calm down and drive me there, please.” You replied to his frantic, unintelligible rubbish.

He only nodded and walked briskly to the vehicle to help you in. By this time Karen had already gathered the whole family and they were getting into their own vehicles to follow.

Six hours later and Michael’s whole demeanor was different. He sat looking at his little baby girl with the biggest grin on his face and happy tears in his eyes.

Neither of you were able to hold her yet, the doctor said something about her jaundice levels being a little off, which was common for a baby born slightly premature. But her weight was healthy and everything else checked out, which made you and Michael ecstatic.

Michael had dragged you out of bed several times to go and check on her, of course, she was fine every time. But it was well worth it whenever you got to see the way his eyes lit up whenever they landed on her.

You were sharing you’re bed with Michael watching some local show when you realized that a new day had started only moments ago.

“Mikey, baby, I almost forgot to tell you! Happy Father’s Day! It’s a little late but I kind of had a lot going on.” You smiled at him sheepishly and he only grinned back.

“I can’t believe I’m a dad. This is insane. I’m glad it’s you though, I’m glad that I found you. I couldn’t imagine having a life with anyone else but you.” He replied, tears still glossing his eyes.

The both of you cuddled, kissed and discussed names for hours, you dozing off every now and then. But around four in the morning the sweet nurse that had been keeping you updated stepped in and asked what you and Michael had been waiting for.

“Are you ready to hold your new baby girl?”

I'm a trans guy who just bought men's clothes for the first time and I plan to again later this week! But my mom noticed that some of the clothes were men's clothes and told me not to buy them anymore. Is there some way I can hide them from her while still looking like I bought the "correct clothes"?

Devon says:

All that I can think of is to buy men’s clothes that look more gender neutral and then take off the tags so that she can’t see that they’re labelled as “men’s.”

Do followers have any other ideas?

An excerpt from Shirley Guthrie’s Christian Doctrine – he’s talking about the fifth commandment in terms of how to honor “theological parents,” i.e. the church’s scholars, but this could definitely apply to how we are called to honor our actual parents. Not as gods whose will must always be followed, but by remembering that God’s will and truth comes first.

I think I am being emotionally abused by my father. I didn't know who to come to so I'm just gonna ask a bunch of people. But he basically blames everything that's bad that happens to him on me. Then he says sorry for hours and says he's the worst father and that he's sorry. But he yells in my face and get really angry with me then says he's sorry he's just a single dad trying his best and that it's not enough to meet my needs making me feel guilty. Idk if it's emotional abuse but it feelslikeit

I’m sorry you’re going through this. That certainly sounds like emotionally abusive behavior to me.

Your father needs help, likely from a professional therapist. If you can make that suggestion (it might be far easier if you can make the suggestion to a close family member you can trust who can then be the one to tell him) that might be a step in the right direction, but he needs to own his actions, and recognize that his emotional manipulation and inconsistency is the cause of the harm here more than anything else. In the meantime, please take care of yourself. Give yourself as much healthy distance/space as you can, and make sure you have support from friends/family/therapists/others so you don’t have to cope with this alone.

Hugs.

The “REAL [parent]” trope

You know that trope where an adopted person finds out who their biological parent is, and the writer keeps using the term “REAL [parent]”? Yeah, it’s super gross, and I wish it would stop.

It devalues adopted parents, step parents, legal guardians, and parental figures, and puts all the emphasis on biology, which is a terrible message to give to non-biological parents, AND to their kids. It’s also a terrible message to give people who’s biological parents are terrible parents. It also often perpetuates the narrative that parents somehow own their children, when it’s used in scenarios where a parent gave up or lost custody of their child, and now wants custody back on no other basis than a biological “right” to the child.

The importance and value a parent has in a person (or character’s) life should be determined by the effect they have on their child, not genetics. A biological parent is not more “REAL” than any other type of parent, ESPECIALLY if they’ve been absent for much/most of the child/person’s life, and it’s genuinely awful to perpetuate the harmful narrative that they are.
