The Surfrider Foundation has a proven model for success—a playbook and a team—that transforms passion into protection. We continue to leverage that model within our network of chapters and clubs. We ensure beaches are accessible, keep our water clean, protect our ocean, preserve our coasts and keep plastic from polluting our waterways.
Why Surfrider?Campaigns define us as an organization. It’s how we protect our special coastal places, ensure our ocean is healthy and wild, keep pollution out of the water and make sure every beach is clean and accessible for all to enjoy. Each and every campaign has a defined beginning, middle and end.
#SaveOurCoast! Help ensure our rights as guaranteed by the California Coastal Act by demanding the California Coastal Commission adhere to this landmark law. From beach access to habitat protection, following the guidance put forth in the Act is imperative for California, now and into the future..
Martin's Beach is a picturesque pocket beach just south of Half Moon Bay. It had long been visited by the public until soon after it was sold in 2008 to a then-anonymous owner for $32.5 million. Not long after the property changed hands, the billboard was painted over and a keycard gate was closed permanently to the public.
Our coastlines are under siege from the impacts of climate change. Rising sea levels and more powerful storms are shrinking our beaches and diminishing the public’s ability to enjoy these special places. Pollution from fossil fuels is altering ocean chemistry and threatening marine life and whole ecosystems.
Surfrider represents coastal recreation users in ocean planning efforts in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Washington State. Our goal is to protect outstanding ocean and coastal places before they become threatened by development.
Recent research tells us that there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050! We see single-use plastic items, including the easily littered plastic bags, polluting our beaches and ocean. Marine plastic pollution is also extremely harmful, and sometimes fatal, for marine life. That is why Surfrider advocates to Ban the Bag!
Back in 2000, the Surfrider Foundation was one of the driving forces behind the initial passage of the Beaches Environmental Assessment and Coastal Health Act (BEACH Act). Today, our chapter network continues to work at the federal, state and local level to ensure that you have the information you need to know if a day at the beach will make you sick.
Plans remain to allow seismic testing for oil and gas in the Atlantic in anticipation of future offshore drilling. Seismic testing is a major threat to marine wildlife and our ocean ecosystems.
From testing our coastal waters to ensuring that runoff stays in your garden to certifying ocean friendly restaurants, Surfrider's programs help ensure that our marine environments are protected on many different levels.
