I'm in year five of my BS, I had a rough time for the first three years and my grades totally tanked so my prospects were low. Near the end of the semester last spring, I took a chance to ask a prof if I could help out in his lab over the summer because I really enjoyed his class. We set up a meeting, I started out in his lab last summer, and now after a year I've got a paper submitted for publication and we're discussing a master's program. Simple as that - although I was lucky to find a prof that was willing to take a chance on me even though my GPA was truly atrocious. Go out on a limb, make yourself available, ask questions, and once you find something that interests you, pursue it with all you've got. It can be exhausting, but it's so, so worth it.

I just started running a week ago and I just had to tap out of this morning's run (#4) halfway through. I feel terrible, physically and mentally. My diet isn't great (broke busy college student) but I want to start taking my health seriously. This morning I felt lightheaded and my chest was starting to feel tight and breathing was hard - I'm suspecting it was diet/water related, but I really don't know where to start here. What do you eat and drink to prepare for a morning run and feel your best? Anyone have a favorite runner's breakfast or routine?

Unless you are diabetic your body should have enough glycogen stored up to run without eating much or at all. Same goes for hydration, you should be drinking enough water that you aren't overly dehydrated in the morning. That said, I'll usually drink a small glass of water and a piece of toast with peanut butter or something, maybe just some fruit. Nothing more than ~150-200 calories or so, so that I don't feel sick to my stomach during my run. If I have enough time that I think I can poop before my run, I'll have a cup of coffee, otherwise I skip that until afterwards for obvious reasons.

Edit: I should add, I'm a pretty big guy, 6' 200, and I ran 6 miles this morning with only a couple handfuls of berries. I used to think I would get really woozy without eating, but that really isn't the case.

Thank you for your advice and for giving your routine, I really appreciate it! I'm not diabetic, but my diet definitely needs work as I've frequently felt lightheaded and fatigued over the past few years (which I attribute to stress/diet/water). If I don't change my diet and water uptake it'll be a terrible transition into running so I think that'll be my focus for now.

Thank you. I wasn't raised by n' s, but I think my ex was one. I find myself picking up a lot of his old mannerisms and anger issues lately, and after I snap myself out of them I always wonder if I'm displaying narcissistic behavior. I didn't realize this was something that other people struggle with, too.

Thank you for posting this link. I'm sending this message to both of my OH reps:

"A bill has just been introduced that would help to protect the job of Special Counsel Mueller - it is vital to the future of our democracy that this bill be passed. We cannot allow this government to be undermined by this presidential cabinet, as they have expressed on several occasions their intentions to halt the ongoing investigation of Special Counsel Mueller. By declining to protect his position, we are showing the rest of the world that we are easily manipulated, frightened, and biased towards a cabinet whose influence may be purchased. Please know that many who you represent are in favor of the continuation of this investigation."

This is my first time writing my own message to a political figure. I have never been as angered or as motivated as I've been in the past several months, and I hope I can convince my friends and family to take a stand, too. I'm so fucking heated over this whole process and I'm just overwhelmed with information. Can someone let me know if this message sounds okay before I send it off?

I'm new to the sub, so this might have been mentioned before. If so can someone redirect me to a thread?

The main assumption underlying this observation is that Beth and Jerry wouldn't be together if they didn't get pregnant with Summer, and that Morty probably wouldn't have been born if Summer wasn't born first (this is a loose assumption, we can always assume that Beth and Jerry got together again later, but this seems unlikely to happen in SO many universes).

In Episode 8 (the first interdimensional TV episode), Summer realizes that there are a LOT of universes where she's not around. She finds a few, but most of the universes she flips through are "blank" so to speak, so she does not exist in those universes.

However every Rick has a Morty (need reference for "every"). Why are there so many Mortys, if there are so few Summers?

Edit: Fixed episode #

There are a lot of universes where Beth doesn't have an unplanned pregnancy. Simple as that.

Or there are universes where Rick and Morty fuck up and Summer dies. Or Rick takes Summer for an adventure now and then, but that Summer isn't as capable as the Summer we are used to.

I really like that second point, actually - if the versions we know are the Mortyest Morty and Rickest (Rickiest?) Rick, it makes sense they would be accompanied by the Summeriest Summer, and maybe they found her after the Croenenburg episode in a survival-of-the-Summeriest kind of way.

which books would you recommend, anyway?

I'm not that other guy, but you might want to check out Contributions to the Founding of the Theory of Transfinite Numbers by Georg Cantor.

Neat, thanks for the suggestion! I love that we can still reference works published more than a hundred years ago.

One weekend day after my shift ends at 2am in a college town, the streets are still packed with drunk people looking to get more drunk. I see a guy walking down the sidewalk pissing for the whole length of a block - honestly it was more impressive than gross at the time but there were so many people around, I'm surprised he got away with it... dick out and everything, just chatting it up with his pal, who seemed to be getting a kick out of it.

First time poster in ScA, I'm finally fed up with these small blemishes and am seeking help (and looking at dermatologists in my area)!

I never had a problem with acne growing up (currently 23, F), but over the last 8 mos or so I feel like I'm subtly breaking out all over my forehead, cheeks, and jawline. It doesn't usually progress into full-blown pimples but it's just bumpy and sometimes reddened and itchy. I developed an allergy to amoxycillin sometime growing up and had a rxn to that, and I'm worried that I'm developing an allergy to some other product that I use now, although I'm wondering if it's mostly diet-related (I'm a working college student, I don't have much time for cooking anymore so I often resort to easy unhealthy meals :( I'm working on that).

My skin is normally pretty neutral. I've noticed dry patches around my mouth but just when it's cold out, and some oil around my nose and forehead but it's not excessive.

Daily routine:

AM: scrub face with Olay regenerist luminous foaming cleanser, dry off then apply Olay whips (this stuff works great for my dry skin, I love it! However I'm still figuring out the right amount to use at a time to avoid buildup)

Afternoon: sometimes do a simple wash with water if I've been sweating or if I notice excessive oil

PM: usually apply Olay whips again (recommended use twice per day; I know I should wash again beforehand but I don't often feel like it's necessary)

I'm not sure what might have impacted my skin; I started doing work in a lab on campus with beetles about a year ago and I hope it's not some reaction to my work, because I enjoy working in the lab. I'm not sure if I'm eating out more than normal, but my (broke-college-student) diet has been pretty consistent over the last few years. I rotate different hair products in my long-time search to find the best shampoo/conditioner for me, and have used a few different skin care products over the years but these two products have the best results so far, I think.

I'm in the US.

Thanks you guys - I'd love any advice you can give!

The itchiness makes me immediately think of fungal acne.

here and here and here are a few threads which talk about it!

As for the cleansing, I would actually switch up when you wash. Cleansing in the AM is optional, but in the PM is can really help get any potential irritants off! Really.

Also, potentially it could just be regular bacterial acne and a bit of dehydration, but you'll have to evaluate!

Uh oh, I didn't know that was a thing! I'll definitely look into that to see if it's anything like what I've been seeing. Thanks for the heads up :)

eta I hadn't thought that cleansing in the PM would be more important, but I'll for sure be adding that in for a while to see how it works! Makes sense that the day's grime and oils would need to washed off asap, why hadn't I thought of that?? Gosh this is tricky.

I started the year with $115 in savings while making school and CC payments (while being a full-time student with a part-time job). I now have $400 in savings and a bit less debt, and my school payments are done for the semester, so I can now pay off more chunks of debt and also put aside more to save. I also just earned a scholarship for my last semester, and I'm finally financially comfortable :) I still have some debt, but at least my emergency fund is in a better place, and if I live semi-frugally over the summer I can pay off the CC debt before my last semester starts in August!

I haven't felt this comfortable in two years, I feel like I can finally breath again because I know where my next tank of gas is coming from. This sub has been a huge inspiration to me, thank you for being a great source for positively planning ahead.

My husband likes to supply my drinks and hold my yarn! Makes him feel more part of the process. It’s adorable

My SO is the same, he'll bring over a beer and just sit and hold the cake 😂 it's truly adorable

Seriously I'm so glad that you're thoughtful enough to bring me food home when you can and I love you for it, but please please stop, when I say I'm not hungry it means "no I don't need late night taco bell but thanks"

It's a waste of money and so fucking unhealthy. I'm sick of stressing out about how to tell you this.

And goddamn tell your mom to stop saying "c'mon, you know you want some" when I say I'm not fucking hungry. I'M NOT HUNGRY BETH STOP

Take him to the vet. I've heard from a few vets that antlers are terrible chew toys for dogs, and if it's split it could cause some serious damage.

I had a small dog that chewed off a piece of a nylabone (a damn nylabone, those things are made for chewing) that got lodged in his small intestine. At his worst he kept trying to vomit but nothing came up, he wasn't eating or drinking, and eventually needed an (expensive) emergency surgery to have some damaged tissue removed. He was fine in the end, but it's definitely a scary experience for both the owner and the animal! Get your dog checked out tomorrow morning to make sure they're okay, especially if it's a smaller dog!

New fountain pen user here, I've only got a Platinum Plaisir but I'm definitely shopping around for more goodies :)

Something I'm a bit confused about is the process for switching the inks - currently my pen has about half the ink left in the cartridge, but if I wanted to switch to a converter and some other ink, do I have to finish off the cartridge or will it hold the ink if I take it out?

And I have the same question for ink in a converter - if I wanted to switch to a new ink, do I have to finish what is currently in the pen or can I dump that back into the bottle?

I'd love some videos if you guys have any recommendations, I'm just a bit overwhelmed here and excited to get sucked into the FP world!

but if I wanted to switch to a converter and some other ink, do I have to finish off the cartridge or will it hold the ink if I take it out?

The ink won't spill if you remove the cartridge with the pen pointing upward, but what remains in the cartridge will dry out as cartridges cannot be resealed easily.

if I wanted to switch to a new ink, do I have to finish what is currently in the pen or can I dump that back into the bottle?

Would recommend either finishing what's left or throwing it down the sink. Even a full converter is only cents worth of ink. Returning used ink to a bottle risks contamination and ruining the entire bottle with mold growth.

That makes sense - thanks for the insight!

Update: I'm pretty sure this is just a very very badly phrased denial for a car loan from two months ago; it doesn't have the dealership's name anywhere, but is otherwise similar to other letters I've received from several weeks ago. False alarm.

So I have two lines of credit: the Chase credit card offered through Amazon, and a PayPal Credit account (I have never missed a payment to either). PayPal increased my credit limit out of the blue, and shortly after this Chase Bank started offering a credit increase for the card - I apply and get it instantly.

A week or two later (today) I get a letter from Santander credit union saying that I was denied a credit line increase through them - I have never heard of them and have certainly never opened a line of credit with them.

Is this an indication that someone has opened a credit account under my name, or did they somehow hear about my recent credit line increases, and use this letter as a means of advertising? I'm a bit new to this (22 yo) and have tried to be careful with my finances, and frankly I'm terrified of identity theft as it's happened to my sister about five times. Any advice (or resources) would be greatly appreciated.

Look up "Santander Credit Union," find their phone number, call them and tell them about the letter you received.

I have a feeling this is a scam, someone sent you a letter that looks legit, and if you call the number on the letter, it goes to the scammer. The scammer will pretend to be Standander Credit Union, they will ask you for name, ssn, dob, etc., and bam! They've got your info, now they will steal your identity.

Though I could be wrong.

Original Poster3 points·7 months ago

I'm hoping that's all it is - I'll call them later today and get as much as I can out of them without giving them any personal info.

I'm not totally convinced that the letter is fake though - it's not asking for any information or contact from me, it has a legit layout and a reference number, and came in one of those perforated packets that you tear three sides off of. I recently applied for a car loan and I'm wondering if this is related since Santander Consumer specializes in auto loans, but this was months ago...

Thanks for the input though!

Sounds fishy but I don't know why it would arrive at your place. Usually fraud is made at another address. Does this credit union have a physical address? If so, I would go there and explain the situation. I would advise against giving personal info over the phone/email.

Original Poster1 point·7 months ago

That's what I was thinking, it seemed weird that I would receive anything at all - however I've seen stupider accounts of fraud; once, someone got into my PayPal account to send money to some other account, and didn't even change my password. And then when I contacted PayPal they hung up on me when they thought I wasn't the account holder...

Not sure if there's a Santander location anywhere near me but I'll look into that - thanks for the suggestion! I would definitely prefer to speak to someone in person to work this out.

YES another plucky knitter here! Is that primo or snug fingering? It's beautiful so far :)

Are you coming to the shindig this year?

Original Poster2 points·7 months ago

Yay! So happy to find a Plucky Knitter! All Primo Fingering for this one. (:

I'll be there! How about you?!

Loving it! It's gonna look awesome when it's done! I've actually never done a shawl in primo anything buuut I really need to start one eventually :)

I think so! Still crossing my fingers that my school schedule will be light for that weekend but it's looking up! Are you active in the plucky rav group at all? I would probably recognize you if you were haha my username is moemr and I'm a rav addict, it's bad

:looks at the $150 pile of hand-dyed merino and merino-cashmere-nylon blends she bought on vacation:

Cheap yarn is a gateway drug, my friend.

That moment when you realize that you got into knitting to save money on cool accessories then you drop $154 on worsted weight yarn for a sweater because it was on sale

I watched this kid over the summer, sweetest little guy ever, he got super attached to me. I had heard some stories about his mom wielding a knife at his daycare, and he let it slip to me that she hits him sometimes and has mood swings. He always had bruises and would just say that he fell, and other teachers thought it sounded like a script.

But all the other kids LOVED her, they would race to have her pick them up to spin them around, she acted like the nicest lady around all of them but was always so weird and possessive towards the adults.

I don't watch the kid anymore, but I'm keeping an eye out for his mom on social media. I worry about him.

In Friends they sometimes randomly show Monica or phoebe knitting, and I think once even chandler and Rachel? I'm binge watching this show right now and there have been a few times that took me by surprise

I think you misunderstood TPK. They release updates (read: they open their shop on their blog) every two weeks or so, and you can buy as much of anything as you want. There isn't a minimum number of skeins to purchase, and their cheapest yarns are $19 (worsted weights, Trusty and Rustic). It takes about a month to receive the order because they're constantly dyeing yarn and working on new surprises. You put requests in the wishlist thread on ravelry and they listen to people's requests, announcing ahead of time what colorways and bases are available at updates! Sure, they're pricier and there's definitely a bit of a cult following but they are very active on ravelry and have AMAZING customer service. I've only been using TPK yarns for a few months but I'm completely in love with them and have loved every base I've tried, I've never been disappointed with the quality of my FOs! Also, you can usually score better deals on yarn of you look through the destash/trade thread on ravelry. People post there all the time and it's usually discounted a bit with shipping included. Also, they have a shop they try to keep stocked with extra skeins, it's called the Plucky Reserve, available through their website. They stock a little bit every day, and shipping is super cheap.

TL;DR plucky is wonderful, definitely worth it!

Also they just released a free colorwork hat pattern today on rav, it's gorgeous! I believe it's called Paint By Numbers, lasted as $5 but free in the cart.

Original Poster2 points·1 year ago

But they only release limited colours per update/blog sale right? I'm reading up on the upcoming one and the colours they've posted seem extremely limited - I just want to be able to shop their whole colour palette at my leisure!

I already 'bought' the free pattern, thank you!

You're right, only limited colors for each update (which is a bummer when you have a specific color in mind). They do take requests into account, and you can often find specific colors for sale in the destash thread and put it an ISO request, but you won't always have luck unfortunately :( it seems that most plucksters work around the colors that are available at the time, rather than plan out all the intricate details of their next project and find specific colorways that need, so it's hard to plan out projects ahead of time when you want to use TPK. It's a weird way of buying yarn and it's a different mindset that requires some patience and I'm still not totally used to it, but I love the yarn! I don't know what it is, it's just addicting!

Somehow releasing limited colors at a time makes it more fun, like "I've been waiting for this color for a couple months and now that is here I can't wait to order" but not in a frustrating way? Like when you can order what you want, when you want is just not as special because you can do it anytime, so ordering plucky is really a special experience to me, it gives me something to look forward to :)

ETA sorry for all the typos haha I'm on mobile and it's like 1am

I think you have 30 days to redeem rewards after they are earned

The three things that stands out the most to me are:

  • make the collar thinner and shorter, if you want to do a turtleneck at all. If not, I would just do a regular rounded collar (like on a tshirt) with a few rows of ribbing.

  • make the sleeves flare out less, so that there are decreases as you go down the arm, end with a few rows of ribbing

  • get rid of the body shaping, just go straight down, end with a few rows of ribbing. You could also add some additional smaller cables in the blank space between the larger cables?

Good luck!

My husband caught a 1300 cp dragonite and accidentally transferred it the next day, just before they changed the button layout.

Five minutes later he caught an 1800 cp snorlax.

Original Poster1 point·1 year ago

I will be selling these, but I have never sold any of my knitted items besides 3 scarves (Harry potter) and a knitted pumpkin. I really have no idea how much to sell these for. I was thinking $10, but I will be using a friends booth at a comic con and he wants to tack on $5 to the price. Is $15 too much? This is Lion brand thick and quick and they are stuffed with supreme fiber fill.

Perhaps you could do $15 for the first pig, $10 for each additional pig? Also consider how long it takes to make them - if they're a quick 20 minute project then you could actually make some quick profit from them. You might consider doing different size pigs and sell family sets because I think people would eat that up (like the stickers on the backs of cars).

Original Poster1 point·1 year ago

I am thinking it is about time to split the sleeves and the body. But it seems that the length from the neck line to the armpit is about right but the sleeves are not wide enough; I am thinking it is because I am not increasing enough stitches comparison to the growing length. I have been increasing stitches every 4th rows . Is it going to look weird if I start increasing every 2 rows from here on? Or should I keep doing the same thing until the sleeves are wide enough? I am afraid the length from the neck to armpit is going to be too long.

I don't think it would look weird if you started increasing every 2 rows, especially that far down the sleeves, so it should look fine. Keep in mind too that typically (at least, as I've seen it) once you split for the sleeves you cast on a few stitches on each side of the side marker (I've seen anywhere from 2 to 14 stitches added to each side after splitting, total) so work your increases around this depending on how many stitches you want to pick up later.

It looks great so far, good luck!
