'Swhat I'm seeing in a lot of studies. I'm sure what's hoped (for most studies) is that it generates interest, which generates $ to fund a larger, more representative study. There's also that publish-or-perish thing in academia, so I'm sure some of it is "ya gotta go with what you got" to just get that paper in a journal.
Sometimes researchers are bound by whatever flavor of the month the NSF or NIH decides is most delicious.
The companies who might benefit from a study such as this should be hit up for funding.
I mean, to be fair, one can tell a lot about a population from a sample size of 30. Assuming the population is normally distributed, this is the minimum number of samples needed for helpful analysis. The more the better I suppose, but i don’t think a larger sample size would reveal THAT much more.
Replication/similar results are always nice, though.
I've seen studies with n=5, even.
Yeah n=5 is way too little...can’t really tell much from that.
Let’s say I’m using a 95% confidence interval
Wait, weren't you doing a test, not a CI? Is the CI two tailed? Why would you have a p-value associated with a CI? (What the heck are you doing?)
I thought if the CI was 95% then the alpha is .05 and then i compare the p value to the alpha to either accept or reject the null?
if the CI was 95%
That's for a CI
then the alpha is .05
That's for a hypothesis test
They may or may not correspond, depending on what you're doing in each. (It's possible to get one from the other, but not if you aren't doing the corresponding thing; there's no way to guess if you really are doing the corresponding thing from what you said so far)
Unless you understand exactly what you're doing I wouldn't suggest mixing the two concepts; you'll get confused. (You did already!)
I don’t really know exactly what I’m doing lol, I’m confused :(
I’m focusing on performing the two tail hypothesis test and using the alpha. Just needed to know if I compare the p value against .05 or .025. According to another user I should double the p value and compare it against .05. Is this correct?
Hey there! I have IBS as well as blasto. Unfortunately, it is notoriously difficult to get rid of. What has helped me is 1. Going on a ketogenic diet. 2. Taking triple antibiotic therapy.
With that being said, majority of doctors will not prescribe the triple therapy. It is a combination of 3 meds...my cocktail consisted of alinia, secnidazole, and paromomycin. I contacted a doctor in the UK by Skype in order to get a prescription. His name is dr. Econs and his website can be found in the following link: https://www.allergymedicaluk.com/
Ask to have a consultation with dr. Econs, he is great. Unfortunately my first round of triple therapy failed to get rid of the parasite (although my symptoms greatly improved after). I am about to take another round with slightly different meds. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.
Isn't it a sign that almost no athletes and no body builders are keto? This clearly seems to not be a diet for anyone who values athleticism and body composition.
Why would this not be a diet for someone who values athleticism and body composition? Different strokes for different folks. If you don’t feel well on the diet then stop doing it, no need to make little digs at those who have chosen to eat this way.
Because very very very little athletes go on the kiet diet, and if they do it's for very short periods of time. I've been involved in the athletic field for years and I follow closely with a lot of what my favorite athletes do for nutritional routines and none of them go keto, simply for the lack of carbs/energy.
Yeah I would venture to say that majority of people go on keto for weight loss and health reasons rather than to boost athletic performance. That does not, however, mean they don’t value it. Why are you personally doing keto? If you feel it is impeding your progress then it doesn’t make sense to continue. Have you tried a targeted keto approach where you eat carbs prior to exercise? That could help with explosiveness and power.
I do a lot of grappling and weightlifting and definitely suffered when I first started. I’m a month and a half into keto and I’m really feeling great energy wise as well. Glad to hear you are feeling better :)
Rinse thoroughly and on fry them with no oil to draw out the water. Makes it more noodle like.
Hey there. My anxiety flared up when I went keto a little over a month ago. It’s MUCH better now. I’m not sure if I would have a flare up if I went off keto, but to be honest I don’t really want to find out lol.
I think it has to do with our bodies experiencing stress with change. Some folks seem to handle it quite well and others (like myself) seem to experience anxiety. It’s almost as if the internal sirens are going off to alert of us of potential danger.
I also had this issue when starting. As long as you have a properly functioning gallbladder it will most likely pass. My poops normalized after about a week.
What’s up! What helps me get back into things when I have lost willpower is to make choices based on my values and then go through the motions towards them.
A lot of times we wait for motivation before action, but unfortunately that motivation rarely comes. A good recipe for success is ACTION and then the motivation will follow.
As far as your values...what is it you value? Losing weight? Better health? More energy? Better mood? List out the reasons of why you are doing keto and how they align with what you VALUE in life. Once that’s done, write out what is keeping you from living according to these values and decide if you really want those forces steering the bus that is YOUR LIFE.
Finally, once you start getting back on the keto train you will gain momentum and it will become easier! You can do this and we are all rooting for you! Acknowledge all those negative thoughts in your mind and go do it anyway! You are a strong and resilient individual who can push past this obstacle! KCKO!!! :)
Hey buddy, thanks for sharing your story, I’m happy to hear you are feeling better. Personally, I have experienced pretty severe depression and anxiety over the past 3 years and keto has really helped me. Right now I am doing great with a combination of keto, low dose SSRI and weekly Therapy. I hope you continue to improve and please consider Therapy if you have not already done so. There are so many great coping skills you can learn! Anyways, happy to hear you are doing well :)
That is the thing. It isn’t only the energy. It is also the desire to get things done.
I need to read a bit more about how keto affects brain chemistry.
Apparently the diet’s main benefit On brain chemistry is ketone’s effect on GABA receptors. Also, our brains actually prefer fat over carbs...so that’s another plus. Personally I have seen a positive affect on my mood since starting. I’m much more balanced and things don’t bother me as much.
Welcome! This diet is awesome and has made me feel better than I have in a long time. I am currently one month in and starting to feel fat adapted.
Biggest hurdle for me starting out was the dreaded keto flu...I had a small bout of depression and anxiety the second or so day (likely after my glycogen stores were all used up), but I powered through and at so glad I did. Other symptoms included muscle weakness, slight lightheadedness, and overall. I suggest drinking some ‘keto-aide’ (mixture of salt, no-salt, and magnesium citrate) to combat this.
I started keto for stomach issues and inflammation and I have been feeling much better. I also lost about 5 lbs (but probably water weight)..I’m a 26 yo male, 6 ft. And 175 lbs. currently very lean and keto keeps me looking quite ripped.
I’m not sure if you have ‘dieted’ before, but as a fellow young male you may be subject to hearing people’s bullshit about what you’re eating (at least I did). Forget them and do what’s best for you; this community serves as a great support and reminder that we are doing this for our health and not for other people to feel comfortable with themselves. Welcome to the keto train!! KCKO!!
Thanks heaps for the support mate!!! Really appreciate the words of encouragement 😊 never dieted before or watched my eating so I'm excited to give it a try
I got down to about 185lbs a few years ago through watching my eating and frequent training so I'm wanting to do that again, and more!
Dude you are going to see some good results. Now that I no longer eat carbs I can really see how they were affecting my body. You can also watch the documentary ‘fat head’ for some good info on where the carb craze first started. Anyways, good luck my friend!
I just don’t understand why people are so concerned with what other people eat. I’m a 26 yo male and people are always questioning why I’m on a ‘diet’. I explain to them that it’s just the way that I eat rather than a ‘diet’. On some level they must feel uncomfortable within themselves to get a rise out of what you order. I say, screw them and do what works best for you! KCKO!!
When I first moved away to go to college I was very anxious of the unknown. Now I can't believe I ever used to live with my parents. Especially considering how you said your parents are not exactly emotionally there for you, I think it will be good for you to get out of a low-energy environment and to live on your own terms. It's the anticipation you're anxious about; once you move out, I think you'll come to like it.
Thanks...funny thing is that I moved out when I was 18 for college and lived on my own for 7 years and never felt this way. Now for some reason it feels different.
I started cycling for the same reasons as you, and I went to a bike shop and got a Jamis Allegro. You could start with that or something similar, any flat bar/fitness or Hybrid type bike. I still use it a lot, I really like it, it serves my needs well. You'll see a lot of people on here who may suggest a road bike but I find that some hybrids are just fine on the road
I live in south Florida so I do regular rides on the intracoastal and on the beach. You know how salt air will screw with your car brakes? It will wear on your chain a little. Just make sure you maintain it and you're good, just some inexpensive maintenance
I’m in south Florida as well! I’ll be riding around ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood beach. Thanks for the advice
Each person becomes fat adapted at a different rate, however the time floating around is 6-8 weeks for most people.
As for feeling more tired earlier in the evening. This is normal early on. Your body isn't used to using fat as fuel. Also another thing that can be a cause is your body isn't wired from the sugars you might of consumed before. After become fat adapted, you will find you won't get tired as early on.
When I first started, I would get random bouts of sleepiness. Now I go to bed later and wake up later.
Ok cool, I figured it was just my body making the switch but wanted to see if others had experienced this also, thanks!
Salt and no salt. Mix it up with a ketorade mix
I keep seeing ‘no salt’ what is that? What is it used for?
Magnesium glycinate One of the higher absorption rates for magnesium Also doesn’t have the laxative effect
Great, that’s the one I decided on, thanks!
I like to take a serving, add some cream and maybe a nut milk to fatten/bulk it up
How so? Do you make a milkshake sort of thing?
You might learn from this and not buy it. It sounds like a potential slope
Yeah I’m not messing with it anymore...probably the last pint I’ll be buying for a while
Holy shit, good job dude! Very inspirational! I’m currently one week in and feeling pretty good
I like to use decaf when I made bulletproof cofffee. Just brew some coffee, add a tbsp of unsalted butter. A few drops of stevia, and some MCT oil. Keeps me energized without the highs and lows of caffeine!
Does anyone have a link to a good recipe they use? I’ve been searching and there’s so many to choose from!
I have Chosen Foods Avocado Oil Mayo in my fridge right now (they also make coconut oil one, I think) - I believe I got it from Walmart
There's Primal Kitchen which someone else mentioned - this one is at Thrive Market
Sir Kensington brand - had this one before and it was good
They are all pretty expensive and the stick blender method really is super easy.
Awesome thanks! Yeah...I’ve been researching how to make it and it does seem really easy. As long as I can make a lot at once and it will stay good for a week or so then I can try making it.
Had the same thing a few days ago, slept 3 hours had to go feed the cat, by the time he finished eating and I headed back to bed, I was awake, and there was no chance if sleep
I’m enjoying the energy, but sometimes I just want to be chill lol
How much fat are you eating?
I don’t really count my macros, so I’m not totally sure. Maybe I’m eating too much fat?
Yellow and stinks to high heaven? Could be fat malabsorption. Increase your fiber.
Not yellow...more like a greenish tiny. Doesn’t smell too bad either
I’ve had some similar experiences. For me going too low with my calories can cause some pretty nasty anxiety and depression. I talked to a nutritionist about it once and she pointed me to the Minnesota Starvation Experiment as an explanation. Made me feel a lot better knowing it was a real cause and effect.
You might try eating at maintenance for a week and see if your mood improves. If you want to lose weight after that week, I’d slowly reduce calories to a spot that feels comfortable. Might take some trial and error. For me a 500 calorie deficit is the most I can do without having issues with anxiety.
Oh wow, that’s actually comforting to me, thank you. I actually didn’t start keto for the weight loss aspect, but more for the anti inflammatory and body healing properties...so calorie consumption isn’t an issue for me. I literally eat whatever high fat, moderate protein foods I can think of.
Hey there, welcome aboard. This is a really good question, thanks for raising it.
I think it's really common for people to have anxiety around food, eating, and diet, for all kinds of reasons. It sounds like you're feeling physically low right now and that's amping up your anxiety,
Typically what's underneath anxiety is fear. It might be helpful to write out the fears that are lurking around your brain right now. Just brain-dump them all out, no filter. We can probably be more helpful to you if you can articulate them better.
Like: if you're afraid you'll always feel this crappy on keto, we can reassure you that is not going to happen.
Like: if your afraid you're going to go through this awfulness and then keto won't work for you, we can tell you, it's an experiment that you alone can do to find out. But you are very early days and if you stick with it you're likely to see some changes soon. /r/keto is very supportive and you can check in every single day if you want, we will hang with you.
Like that.
You're not alone. KCKO, friend. Keep coming back.
Awesome, thanks eastwardarts! I am familiar with anxiety from thoughts and fears, but this seems different to me. I feel as though my body is in some kind of panic mode due to this dramatic diet change. The thoughts are automatic and intrusive and don’t even necessarily pertain to the diet. I just feel...low and negative about life.
I have noticed that when I eat something it will get a bit better, so that’s a good sign that it’s stemming from adaptation. I’m going to keep going and hope to see improvements in the next few days. Thanks for the reply!
Silk has a coconut milk eggnog. I got it at EarthFare but I don’t know if it’s Keto friendly or not!
Does it have sugar?
