I say this as a former 14 yr criminal investigator at one of the largest departments in the country and current attorney. 7 of those years were investigating violent gang crimes and 2 in homicide. Hey, Jeff Sessions, ever walked into a crime scene where a person shot and killed their spouse, then their two children, then themselves after a domestic disturbance? Ever seen a 5 yr old kid with fatal gunshot wounds? Ever had to give a death notification where you had to go so far down the next of kin list to find someone who cared their relative was killed because they're worried about their immigration status?
Fuck. This. Administration.

Never mind that's exactly the basis for asylum: the home country is unable to appropriately safeguard the individual in question.
A reminder that Sessions can do this because immigration court is Article II, not Article III, and so is run by the DOJ/executive branch. These decisions are the executive branch ruling on its own enforcement action. They're a violation of due process and clearly a violation of the Constitution if they can be superceded so easily.
It's not over, but there's going to be some pretty interesting legal challenges to Sessions' overruling of the judges.
The Trump administration will stop granting asylum to victims of gang violence and domestic abuse, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Monday.
“Generally, claims by aliens pertaining to domestic violence or gang violence perpetrated by non-governmental actors will not qualify for asylum,” Sessions wrote in his decision.
“The mere fact that a country may have problems effectively policing certain crimes—such as domestic violence or gang violence—or that certain populations are more likely to be victims of crime, cannot itself establish an asylum claim,” he continued.
The ruling came hours after Sessions announcedthat he would issue a new interpretation of asylum law.
He told immigration judges in Washington, D.C., that the asylum system was being “abused to the detriment of the rule of law.”

I've never really liked BBY/ABY. It made sense when there was just the original trilogy and it was just an out of universe way of measuring time. But now we have two much better candidates for an event so impactful as to warrant being the thing that calendars are measured by: The birth of the Empire and the destruction of DS2 (or, possibly, the Battle of Jakku).
Honestly, the former makes more sense, as Palpatine would be self-absorbed enough to put the effort into changing it. I can't see the new republic being willing to put in the effort/time/money to change the calendar when there's things of actual importance to deal with.
I'd say DS2 destruction is a better reference point, given no one in the films even talks about the Battle of Jakku.
