where do people "get pictures" of these humongous moons? all I see with my puny eyes is a white dot on the night sky. let alone with a photograph. i call hax.

I went to the beach, three minutes from my house.

I started photography as a 15-year-old. Best decision I ever made. I only wish I started earlier.

Do it.

Have you ever done an AMA on r/photography?

Nope. Not sure if there’s enough interest

Oh man, I might have to pick up that flannel so I look snazzy at the ICESat-2 launch.

Settings: 1/4, f/5.6, ISO 800.

Equipment: Nikon D850 and Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6, at 500mm.

Processed in Adobe Lightroom.

This image is cropped to adhere to /r/astrophotography's no-landscape rule. The moon was rising over the ocean and into atmospheric distortion. I recommend you check out the original upload here.

Due to the moon rising through a variety of thin and thick clouds, it almost looks as if the moon is sheathed in between different layers of cloud. It looks quite cool, in my opinion.

Hi! If you're not familiar with my work, I'm John Kraus, a photographer covering SpaceX and other Cape Canaveral launches as a member of the media. Many of you probably frequently see my images pop up on /r/SpaceX and you all have many nice words to share -- thank you! I'm doing a print sale today and (with the mods' permission! 😊) I wanted to make this post and let you all know.

A lot of folks leave comments or send messages saying they'll order prints in the future if there's ever a sale, or if they have any spare cash -- so I thought I'd drop this post as a reminder if you were planning to pick up a print, or if you haven't seen my store yet.

You can find my online store here: http://www.johnkrausphotos.smugmug.com

If you're looking for stunning wall art for you, or even to gift to a friend, look no further. I'm running a 15% off sale through the end of the day; if you've been waiting to order a print from me for a while, now's the perfect time. I offer paper, metal, and canvas prints, as well as mousepads and mugs. Here's a few photos of some metal prints I have on display myself.

Support from print sales and Patreon help me progress toward making photography my full-time career, a path I decided to purse after graduating high school back in May. I plan to travel to multiple new launch sites this year; support from fellow spaceflight fans will make that a reality!

Thank you again for the support,

John

Hey John! Thank you for posting your website. I've been enjoying your photos that you've posted on Reddit for quite awhile and I'm surprised to see how many excellent photos you have that I've never seen. I definitely want to get sometime from your website to support your photography (and indulge my passion for rocketry), but I have a few questions. Would it be possible to get a print on acrylic? Can you do smaller prints on metal than 10" X 20"? I'd like something that I can put on my desk. If small metal / acrylic prints aren't possible I'll probably go for the mouse pad.

If you're not opposed to hearing some constructive criticism. Your website could use a bit of work to make it look a bit sleeker, more professional and easier to navigate. As the husband of a professional photographer I've spent entirely to much of my life looking critically at other photographers websites!

Thanks for the kind words! Unfortunately 10x20 is the smallest metal print my site offers, and I can't do acrylic.

I'm not sure which site you're referring to, but the print store is supposed to be something simple for print sales only -- you can see my actual portfolio on my website, which is much sleeker and intuitive, and I'm happy with it.

I appreciate the sale, but I wish it was a 2 for 1 sale. I'm having trouble deciding between a couple and can't spring for both.

Haha, I wish I could do that... I’d be throwing away money at that point!

The white balance is way too cold, our galaxy is predominately yellow. Less than 1% of stars in the Milky Way are blue. Here's an example photo with correct colors.

Always happy to see you around on Reddit, especially when you’re spreading the correct astronomical colors when it comes to post-processing.

It's funny because Ben Cooper still has this launch as September 9th local time xD

It’s updated now.

You're forgetting about lenses. it only really needs protection from dew, nothing other than the vibrations caused by the sound, there's nothing to damage the camera.

Now, that's because this is a fully liquid-fueled rocket, If there were SRB's involved, you either have to build an enclosure or write off the lens because SRB's shoot out flaming bits of fuel

other than the vibrations caused by the sound, there's nothing to damage the camera.

This is incorrect -- both of the cameras I placed at the pad for this launch had their lenses sandblasted, rendering them unusable (at least for my standards) at future launches.

Did you destroy the lens or is it pretty safe without SRMs?

Just seeing this, sorry. Lenses were sandblasted and are pitted. Bags protecting the cameras melted away. Cameras and triggers were fine though.

I don't understand what you mean. Obviously neither of these are going to be anyone's first camera.

I think the implication is that once you buy an entry level Nikon, you're likely to stay in the same ecosystem, eventually upgrading and purchasing more expensive cameras.

I don’t think anyone in here disliked the Parker launch at all, I certainly didn’t. that said the days of the delta Iv are slowly drawing to a close, If falcon heavy had been a reality when this was being planned it’s unlikely they could have justified the expense of the delta. EvenULA are keen to move on too newer more cost effective rockets.

ULA’s Delta IV Heavy is supposedly the only rocket in the world capable of launching that mission.

The launch was last week but it's only just made it back to port?

It got back to the port last Thursday.

Thanks, I refuse to give traffic to that website.

They just rehash other people’s work.

They do have dedicated Telsarati photographers.

Where was this taken, and how did you access that location?

Most of the thermal/sound energy is deflected away by the launch structure.

The main concern for a camera is small debris like sand or dirt being kicked up and pitting the lens. I believe a disposable protective filter is typically used to prevent this damage.

I don’t use filters for my remote camera setups

Not even a clear protective filter?

First of all great pictures, but did you also had a chance to photograph the landing burn of falcon? Would really love to see a picture of this.

Original Poster5 points · 24 days ago

I didn’t — the landing burn wasn’t visible as it was too far away, over the horizon. The re-entry burn was visible to some — check out SpaceX’s Flickr; their photographer caught it — but it was obscured by clouds for me. Plus I was already in my car editing the image, lol

Original Poster3 points · 24 days ago

The time was based on how long the first stage burn would be. That info can be found in any given mission’s press kit, which usually comes out a day or so prior to launch. The aperture was just trial and error. I took launch streak photos a few times at different settings and learned what worked best. Every shot like this requires some guess work, even when you can scout ahead of time and take test shots and whatnot. It’s hard to know exactly where the flight path will appear in your frame (although, you can know the general direction), and distance and weather can affect the appearance.

Ah yes. I guess I didn’t think about it being used for that. Thanks, John. Now, I have to learn how to use it.
