People that you absolutely have to check out

Mamoru Oshii - Director of Ghost in the Shell (1997), Patlabor The Early Days, Patlabor Movies 1 and 2, Angel's Egg and Screenwriter for Jin Roh: Wolf Brigade(and a lot of other things). His style is pretty heavily rooted in cinema specifically Russian Expressionist films, which kinda gives him a pretty unique feel among contemporaries. He's very much characterized by slow pacing, heavy thematic overtones, and an emphasis on religion and politics, among other things. Really cool guy with a new animated moving coming out soon(ish).

Kunihiko Ikuhara - Director of Revolutionary Girl Utena, Mawaru Penguindrum, and Yuri Kuma Arashi, as well as being a lead creative figure on the 90s Sailor Moon anime. Takes overt influence from surrealist cinema (both Western and Japanese), but still has a distinct feel that nobody else has quite been able to replicate. Big recommends for his work. Both Penguindrum and Utena are in my top 5.

Satoshi Kon - Director of films Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika, as well as the show Paranoia Agent. Somebody else in the thread already did a write up about him, so I won't get too into it. But his work is interesting to me from a film perspective, since he's one of the only anime directors I can think of that regularly made films about the effect of film on people. Whether it be from an industry perspective like in Perfect Blue, or a "art mirrors life" kinda deal with Millennium Actress, or a sort of audience perspective like in Opus. He very clearly cared a lot about the medium.

Sayo Yamamoto - kinda a lesser known director but pretty talented. She's one of Shinichiro Watanabe's proteges, and it kinda shows. Her work on Space Dandy was pretty damn good, as well as her solo directed shows like A Woman Called Fujiko Mine and Michiko to Hachin. She also is a damn fantastic director of OPs. She directed the OP for Persona 5 (the game not the tv show), Michiko to Hachin, Space Dandy (both OP and ED), and Kakegurui.

Rie Matsumoto - Another lesser known director, but definitely worth talking about. Notable works are Kekkai Sensen and Kyousougiga (that latter of which is one of my favorites). Really distinct and frenetic style. Does a really great job at balancing a sort of fun tone with serious drama, as well as having a really great sense for originality. It says a lot about her that the season of Kekkai Sensen she directed was so good despite being largely anime original.

I also feel like I gotta shoutout Shoko Nakamura. She's only really done extensive direction on Mawaru Penguindrum and the film Doukyuusei. But her work on both is very good.

You seem like you know what you're talking about. Seeing your tastes and your preferences from this list, would you please share your thoughts on Kusakawa Keizou and Sakai Kazuo?

They directed two incredibly stylish animes with their own unique flair called Kancolle and Love Live Sunshine.

With your wisdom I feel you might have some unique insight into these two visionary directors.

Why is Ricky Gervais controlling a giant weird robot face monster?

Yes and No.

The truth is, drinking water CAN dilute stomach acid, but this is not where the misunderstanding lies.

The misunderstanding is that the stomach is just a bag full of acid sloshing around. It's not. A lot of things actually trigger the production of acid from cells and the stomach actually has 'sensors' that can kinda tell what the PH level is in there, and readjust accordingly.

A study (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18473176) shows that drinking one glass of water will dilute stomach acidity to around ph4 (which is still far more acidic than regular food) and the stomach returns it back to 2 within three minutes.

Furthermore, a lot of food you eat is already full of water. Fruits can be up to 90% water and certain vegetables carry a lot of water as well. Sauces, gravy, pasta and rice all have water content.

Basically, a healthy stomach knows what it's doing more than we do and can regulate itself. Unless you have some actual disease OR you are CHUGGING gallons of water while eating, it's definitely more recommended to eat while drinking as liquids help to lubricate food and break it down in the mouth from the start, which in on itself is a digestive aid.

Basically, functionally bullshit although it comes from a grain of truth.

I agree. I hate to say it, because of how close to tactics ogre you know they were trying to make it, but when I bought it (digital) it only served to make me sad that a new FFTA or Ogre game WASN'T around.

Merc Saga is lightweight to the point of nothingness.

Those are all very good counterexamples, I guess you can say that what I said is more of a rule of thumb rather than a universal law.

Seeing as you brought up the panda, I think I once read that their ansestors however used to eat meat and many of their relatives in the animal kingdom eat meat. Is that true?

Pandas actually STILL eat meat. It's a myth that they ONLY eat bamboo. They PRIMARILY eat bamboo but will also chuck a rat or bug down.

I’m just gonna ignore I read this and continue to believe pandas are a cute cuddly bear that wouldn’t eat anything but bamboo

Think about that.

They'd be an apex predator if they weren't so lazy.

Discocactus horstii. What's your soil composition? I've heard that these things are hard to grow and have special soil requirements.

I'll get back to you on this! I post these on behalf of my aged father whom I live with, who doesn't know the internets too good but I wanted to share his hard work.

Unfortunately, while I would love to take credit, I don't grow these myself.

I'll ask and give you a reply soon. :)

If it helps, I live in Singapore, so the temperature and climate should be adjusted accordingly.

Thank you for taking the time to find out.

Hi! Sorry for taking so long to get back to you.

From what I found out, the soil used is a mix of

25 - 30% regular cactus soil (we use a generic brand)

and the rest is equal parts of -

Perlite Pumice Burnt stone Volcanic stone

Non powdery and roughly the size of peas and beans.

We fertilize with used coffee grounds.

And again, take note we live in Singapore, so it is very humid and hot.

I hope this helps!

There's a rifle in the game called the seven-six-five, whose description is basically 'It has a rhythm to it'.

Can't be 100% sure, but I thought this was a neat little thing and decided to share it.

Mio Gun-da

If I'm not mistaken, Onegai Cinderella has a Jazz remix too.

Songs with a jazzy feel that I can think of are:

●Moon Night no sei ni Shite by Dramatic Stars (SideM)

●Secret! Playful! Drive! by S.E.M. and Jupiter (SideM)

●Hanakazari Weekend (Million Live)

●Tullip (Cinderella Girls)

●Illusionista (Cinderella Girls)

●Akimeite Ding Dong Dang (Cinderella girls)

●Onedari Shall We~? (Cinderella Girls)

●Smoky Thrill by Ryuuguu Komachi (OG)

This guy idols.

I would also add:

You're Stars Shine On Me ~For Miku~ Remix

Those are rods, I think!

If you google or youtube them, you'll find that they have been the center of a very interesting cryptozoological conspiracy. For a long time, ghost hunters and cryptid fanciers were convinced that they were some kind of weird alien or ghostly being, but the true fact is that they are merely insects that pass by whose high speed and wing flap rate causes an illusion especially with long exposures in low light.

https://youtu.be/epRDUlRCMQE (Crypto vid on rods)

They have fallen out of public interest because they have been debunked as merely insects messing with your framerate. :)

While I enjoyed the game overall, my biggest complaint is that the game is simply TOO big: there's not enough fast travel points, and constantly traversing these immense areas over and over and over again gets really old. The whole point of Metroidvanias is returning to old areas so that you can advance with new abilities you obtain. By the end of the game I just felt annoyed that I would have to return to the same areas, fight the same enemies, slog through the same platforming, just to get to a new room with a new powerup with my new ability. Many other Metroidvanias don't have this problem, because their maps are usually smaller or they have more generous fast traveling.

Also, the difficulty of some bosses/platforming sections can be pretty crushing and unforgiving, but that is viewed as a positive by many.

This. For a game where you're supposed to die a lot to bosses due to a steep learning curve, they sure make travel difficult. While I must compliment how creative the different forms of fast travel are, (there are more than one) it was still a slog to get around especially if you're a 'random explorer' like me who likes to go from place to place rather than finish sections at a time.

Respawn points are also very scattered, and I think it says something when travelling BACK to a boss takes longer than the boss fight itself (especially when you die from inexperience).

Now. DESPITE this, I still think that Hollow Knight is one of the best platforming games I've played, and I'm not a very big fan of them. I'd say it's still worth getting at the bargain price it's being offered for, and my complaint is just a minor irritation for me.

A peer reviewed clinical test showed that Kombucha has no health properties. Much like a lot of other new-age superfood trends, it doesn't hurt, but it doesn't do as much as people think it does.

In other words, its medicinal effects have been severely exagerrated. This doesn't mean we can conclusively state that it 100% does nothing. It just means that actual science says it does nothing, and a lot of anecdotal evidence says it does something. You'll have to choose what you want to believe.

However, everyone generally agrees that yogurt is definitely good for you in the same way that kombucha purports. You can eat yogurt knowing for sure you're getting the same benefit from kombucha, without the very very slim odds.

It’s not a subtle change at all. Okinawan and Japanese aren’t subtly different. They’re very different.

Dude goes from informal highly masculine speak to formal and polite language. The difference is that he’s going from being informal and silly to very serious and emotionally distant.

Should also point out that it's not Okinawan at all. He is speaking Tokyo Standard Japanese, and the only thing changing is his tone.

To be fair OP may have just read it and thought “oh cool!”

Sure, but it completely invalidates this piece of trivia then, and there really isn't any point keeping this up. In the meantime, it's just spreading 'fake facts' so to speak and that slightly rubs me the wrong way. That's just me, though, but I feel the right thing to do would be to delete this post.

Again, just me, but that's how I feel.

i feel like the Atelier series has become over saturated to the point of i'm like 6 games behind and don't know what the fuck is going on or whats good or what order i'm supposed to play things.

1 point · 1 month ago · edited 1 month ago

Atelier games come in sets of THREE. You can tell by the subtitles. They indicate their relation by the repetiton of certain words. For example the latest three all have 'mysterious' in their subtitles, and this set is the 'mysterious' trilogy. The previous one was 'dusk', and so on.

All the trilogies are set in different worlds from each other and do not overlap except for easter eggs.

Within any one trilogy, the commonalities are the worldbuilding and returning characters. That is, game 2 will build off game 1 and the main characters of 1 will show up in 2, and characters from 1 and 2 will show up in 3. How involved they are depends on the individual trilogies.

THAT SAID, it is often unnecessary to have played games in a series in order to enjoy games as a single stand-alone unit. The game TRIES to indicate if a character has been seen before, and due to the very story-light nature of the games, all you need to know is 'they were a struggling alchemist or a friend of one who then became a great alchemist or a friend of one and did a great thing before and now they're here'.

This game is the start of a new trilogy, as Lydie/Sue was the final game in the Mysterious Trilogy.

Good time to jump in.

Edit: It seems this is a spinoff game and NOT a prime game in a new trilogy. As a series first, all the characters EXCEPT for the MC are main characters from other games in the series. I suspect this is a fanservice game which MAY actually require some knowledge of previous games.

I have never seen those little blow torches used as an actual blow torch and not something someone was using to do drugs.

I do not believe there is any general medical problem with drinking cold water with a meal.

As for the myth that water dilutes stomach acid, there are many good articles on the subject with proper research and quotations of scientific sources such as at https://nutritionbyerin.com/acid-reflux-mythbusters-drinking-water-dilutes-stomach-acid/ .

In general, drinking liquids while eating is GOOD as it helps to lubricate the food going down your gullet. The temperature doesn't matter, and any adverse effects is not due to a general issue but something specific about the person (anecdotal issues). For example my aunt can't drink cold water with her meal because the cold affects her PERSONALLY (she is rather elderly) but she doesn't account for the general populace and the 'standard'.

So if you can't personally drink cold water with meals, then that's a shame but it doesn't make the act unhealthy or bad.

Looks more like a Chinese festival activity to me.

Bingo, got it right

In Singapore, we have this form of English called,"Singlish" which is broken English, so sentences irl sounds like,"Wat you doin for dinner?" That being said, we usually frown on Singlish online, so it eludes ME on his abhorrent English.

This celebrity's name is Steven Lim, and he's the laughing stock of Singapore. He has posted some of the cringiest things online, and he regularly stakes out a popular shopping area, and creepily asks hot women to be models for his agency(he does own one). Hence we mock him.

As for why he took photos with these girls, he is trying to boost his self image to seem as though he has a lot of worth, as associating with Caucasians in Singapore supposedly makes you an "elite". These girls are juvenile, the one showing off her boobs is 14 years old, and disgusting as it may be, this guy is either in his 40s or 50s.

Steven Lim is still relevant? Man, I haven't heard that name in a while.

Edit: I ain't gonna argue about how Singlish is bad, but I'm gonna say what he typed isn't Singlish. It's just terrible English. There aren't any Singlish nuances at all. He may be an idiot but let's make sure we understand him as the right kind of idiot.

You know, with how cool this sub has been with helping people get BACK their lost Switches, it is absolutely disheartening to see you have had the opposite experience.

OP, you have my condolences.

Yeah, all the people who found Switches and went out of their way to get it back to the original owner really gave me a lot of hope.

This person not only decided to keep it, they didn't even have the decency to reset the console. :(

The big question is did you accidentally leave it somewhere or did you 'find it missing'?

If the latter, there might be a likelihood that it was targeted from the start.

There's a difference between someone finding one and someone taking one.

What a co-incident! I was just stronk and butt-naked.
