Telehealth programs
At Northwell Health, we offer convenient virtual care options that make it easier for you to get the care you need, when and where you need it. You can connect with health care providers from the comfort of your home, saving time and stress. Through virtual urgent care, Northwell can direct you to the most appropriate care setting for your situation.
Virtual visits are available for primary, specialty, on-demand urgent care and more. To get started with virtual care, simply call your doctor’s office or request an appointment online. We'll help you set it up.
TeleStroke
Our TeleStroke Program uses video teleconferencing technology to bring specialty stroke care to the bedsides of select Northwell stroke patients. The program provides 24/7 remote consultation from a stroke specialist to those who may be candidates for acute stroke treatment. Our stroke specialists can see and interact with you, your family and your clinical care teams to assist in making treatment decisions or transfers to the Comprehensive Stroke Center at North Shore University Hospital. This program has helped speed up treatment time facilities during the crucial moments of a stroke—when every second matters.
Virtual ICU updates
Virtual ICU uses a variety of tools—including two-way audiovisual technology, real-time and retrospective reporting tools, clinical decision support and population management—to enable remotely located critical care teams to support Northwell's bedside intensive care unit (ICU) and provide around-the-clock care for the critically ill. Using remote monitoring technology, Virtual ICU staff can support the clinical team in identifying subtle changes in conditions sooner, which means faster and more effective treatment. This is a 24/7 supplement to—not a replacement of—on-site patient care at Northwell.
Direct-to-consumer
Using secure videoconferencing technology, this program allows clinicians to provide consultative and diagnostic services to remote Northwell sites, bridging distances and bringing leading-edge care to patients in need. We unite our 21 hospitals and more than 650 outpatient practices under one telehealth infrastructure including physician offices, imaging centers, laboratories, same-day surgical centers, skilled nursing facilities, home care, emergency medical and air ambulance services. This helps providers across our growing network to virtually consult with each other, allowing patients served by Northwell clinics and hospitals to receive more convenient ambulatory-based virtual care when and where they need it. Most services may be accessible through virtual care. Contact your provider for availability and discover the convenience of virtual care.
Remote physiological monitoring
Remote physiological monitoring (RPM) helps your Northwell clinician provide care for you beyond the traditional office setting. With connected devices such as blood pressure cuffs, pulse oximeters, scales and glucometers, your health data can be remotely collected and sent directly to your care team. RPM gives your clinician a more complete, personalized picture of your health so they can better support you in reaching your health goals.
Virtual nursing
Virtual nursing is a rapidly evolving field that uses technology to provide virtual nursing care and support. It encompasses a wide range of services delivered through digital platforms, including video conferencing, mobile apps and remote monitoring devices.
Virtual Lactation Program
The Virtual Lactation Program provides expert lactation guidance from the comfort of your home. We offer a 60-minute one-on-one virtual appointment with an international board-certified lactation consultant nurse (IBCLC). TelePediatrics
TelePediatrics brings specialty pediatrics services (cardiology, gastroenterology and more) to Northwell hospitals, including our neonatal and pediatric ICU. For each program, select Northwell sites can contact a remote specialist at Cohen Children’s Medical Center through telehealth technology and meet with patients directly at the bedside.
Tele-Inpatient Heart Failure Program
The Tele-Inpatient Heart Failure Program provides advanced heart failure consultation to Northwell hospitals that do not have a heart failure expert on site. Eligible patients would previously require a hospital transfer.

Northwell Emergency Telehealth Service (NETS)
- ER On Demand: Northwell offers emergency medicine assessment from the comfort of home. Northwell’s ER On Demand direct-to-consumer telehealth platform is available to our community members 24/7 via their smartphone or tablet. This service is beneficial for people who have health concerns and are not sure if they need to go to the hospital. And, because ER On Demand is 24/7, it is also a great option when doctors’ offices and urgent cares are closed. ER On Demand can provide prescriptions, order outpatient lab and imaging studies, and when appropriate, send a paramedic for a house call.
- TeleTriage: Northwell Emergency Telehealth Service (NETS) is now offering TeleTriage in select Northwell emergency departments (ED) to reduce waiting room times for our patients. TeleTriage allows patients to gain access to specialists through audiovisual technology and collaboration among ED physicians and specialists.
- TeleSNF: Using mobile audiovisual technology, providers can evaluate, monitor and treat patients, avoiding unnecessary transfers to the hospital. Since TeleSNF’s implementation, there has been a reduction in off-hours hospital transfers for Northwell patients. Learn more about virtual emergency medicine.
Tele-perioperative services
Northwell Health is committed to enhancing your experience and streamlining your care. Eligible patients requiring a pre-procedural appointment are now able to meet with clinical providers remotely in the comfort of their own home or work. The programs support a new standard of pre-procedural optimization for eligible patients through telehealth technology. This progressive approach encourages provider and patient collaboration to develop a care plan and discuss the next steps in your health journey at Northwell Health.
Emergency TelePsychiatry
Access to high-quality psychiatric services is critical for patients and families in crisis. The Northwell Health Emergency TelePsychiatry Program provides patients in our emergency departments with around-the-clock access to high-quality behavioral health assessments, stabilization and admissions/referrals as needed. Our telepsychiatry services also include electronic health record (EHR) harmonization across hospitals, collaborative care with emergency medicine providers and seamless inpatient transfer.
As a result of this successful program, we’ve achieved an 88% reduction in wait time for emergency department patients in need of psychiatric services. Approximately 5,000 individuals received care from the Emergency TelePsychiatry Program in 2019.
Global programs
Ukraine
Since February 2022, Northwell Health's Center for Global Health (CGH) has played a critical role in providing essential medical, mental health and humanitarian support to Ukraine through telehealth. Spending more than 750 hours of remote medical care, including lifesaving support. The CGH team raised $350,000 for Ukrainian aid through Doctors Without Borders and matched another $200,000 to support aid for additional global conflicts.
Guyana
In 2021, Northwell Health partnered with Guyana’s Health Ministry, public hospital system and university to modernize health delivery models using telehealth technology. This enhances Guyana's emergency services, and offers opportunities for advanced provider training. This partnership offers hope for better, more affordable health care across Guyana and improves access to care for vulnerable populations. In May 2023, responding to requests for urgent support, Northwell Health transported a critically burned patient to New York where specialty surgeons Dr. Michael Cooper and Dr. Kimlyn Long performed a life-saving skin graft surgery. Three months later, thanks to this collaboration, the young patient returned safely home to Guyana.
Ecuador
In 2022, the Northwell CGH team made strides in improving health care in Quito, Ecuador. Through this partnership, the teams developed point-of-care ultrasound care, universal mental health screenings, provider resiliency programs. They also performed 100 free surgeries. Additionally, CGH donated critical medical equipment to the Ministry of Health and launched a TelePsychiatry program in collaboration with Zucker Hillside Hospital, Universidad San Francisco de Quito, and the Ecuadorian Ministry of Public Health. CGH's efforts have helped to strengthen Ecuador’s health care system and increase access to quality care.
Dominican Republic
In response to the deadly explosion that left 31 dead and dozens injured in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, Northwell Health deployed its Center for Global Health (CGH) alongside experts from its Regional Burn Center to aid in the relief efforts. The explosion at a plastic manufacturer leveled a popular commercial area in the city’s center known as the “Old marketplace,” prompting a massive emergency response.
