Recent Art Study Tours attended by Producers Council members have included a trip to the Venice Biennale, dOCUMENTA, and the Münster Sculpture Project, as well as visits to Colombia, Scandinavia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. The New Museum’s Education and Public Engagement Department serves over 18,000 adults, teens, and families annually. Activities and events include:

PUBLIC PROGRAMS

the chance to dig deeper into the shows on view through discussions between artists, curators, critics, and other leading thinkers. Our signature Outside the Box lectures and a robust schedule of docent-led tours offer intimate views of our exhibitions and insights about the artists who created them. Performance programs include some of the most exciting dance, music, and theatrical pieces being made today, highlighting emerging and risk-taking live art and often featuring commissioned work by current artists in residence.

SCHOOL, YOUTH, AND FAMILY PROGRAMS

Offering immersive experiences for youth and families, the New Museum provides access to the rich context of contemporary art. The First Saturdays for Families program engages children four to ten years old in conversations and activities. A variety of other programs—including the Experimental Study Program, Teen Nights, and the Museum’s Summer Teen Apprentice Program—provide learners aged fifteen to twenty the opportunity to participate in collaborative work with artists in residence, critical discussions about culture, and hands-on experience with various aspects of museum work. Collaboration with partner schools and the Professional Development for Teachers program has facilitated relationships with community educators.

SCHOLARSHIP

The Museum’s research and scholarship initiatives have resulted in several signature programs, including Fifth Floor exhibitions, archival Resource Center presentations, and newly commissioned performances in the New Museum Theater. Public and private roundtables, colloquia, and think tanks have led to or are the results of inquiries pursued throughout the Research and Development Seasons, with artists in residence conducting sessions with teens in the Museum’s Experimental Study Program. In 2014, the New Museum and the MIT Press relaunched the influential Critical Anthologies in Art and Culture series, with a new thematic volume released each year since.

Artemis provided critical support for the New Museum’s most successful exhibition to date, “Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest,” as well as its Phaidon-published publication. The generosity of the group also helped fund exhibitions and publications by nine extraordinary woman artists of diverse ages, geographies, backgrounds, and orientations: Elaine Cameron-Weir, Carol Rama, Kaari Upson, and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye in 2017, and Nicole Eisenman, Goshka Macuga, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz, Cally Spooner, and Andra Ursuta in 2016.
