Macaulay Library Workshops

Macaulay Library Workshops

The Macaulay Library teaches an annual sound recording workshop. This workshop is followed immediately by a sound analysis workshop run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Bioacoustics Research Program. We also work with partners to develop special international workshops. Follow the links below for more information on the different workshops happening this year.

Ithaca Sound Recording Workshop (June 11-18, 2017)

Learn sound recording techniques from experienced sound recordists in the heart of the Finger Lakes. The workshop will be based on the Cornell University campus and at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Each day begins in the field listening to the dawn chorus, learning how to capture the incredible diversity of bird and wildlife sounds. From the Finger Lakes National Forest to Connecticut Hill WMA and Shindagin Hollow State Forest, the Ithaca area offers many beautiful locations that host a range of species and habitat diversity to hone your skills. This workshop also offers an extraordinary opportunity to see the inner workings of the Macaulay Library, eBird, and other programs at the Lab of Ornithology. We welcome beginner and seasoned sound recordists alike.

Ithaca Sound Analysis Workshop (June 2017)

The Sound Recording Workshop (dates TBA) will include a basic introduction to visualizing sounds and making simple measurements with Raven. The Sound Analysis Workshop will delve deeper into topics such as the conceptual foundations of spectrogram analysis (no math required!), optimizing spectrogram parameters, robust measurements, automated signal detection, quantitative comparison of spectrograms, and advanced tips and tricks to make working with Raven easier and more efficient. Sessions will include lectures, demos, and hands-on exercises using the participants’ own recordings. Participants are expected to provide their own Windows or Mac laptop.

Your instructors will be experts from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Bioacoustics Research Program.

Other Workshops at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology

The Bioacoustics Research Program also offers a Sound Analysis Workshop at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology twice per year that gives participants in-depth training on computer-based sound analysis.
