Her first book, White Teeth, is a portrait of contemporary multicultural London, told through the story of three ethnically diverse families. It won several awards including the Guardian First Book Award, the Whitbread First Novel Award, and the Commonwealth Writer’s Prize. Smith’s second novel, The Autograph Man, won the Jewish Quarterly Literary Prize for Fiction and her third, On Beauty, won the Orange Prize for fiction.
