On the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, New York Times editor (and Greenlight neighbor) Clay Risen unfolds the struggle — waged from the streets of the deep South to the halls of Congress — to bring this revolutionary bill into law. Probably the single most important piece of legislation passed by Congress in American history, the Civil Rights Act gave the government sweeping powers to strike down segregation and rectify bias, and the journey to its passage is a sweeping tale of undaunted activism, political courage, historic speeches, backroom deal-making and finally, hand-to-hand legislative combat. Clay talks about the book, the bill and the story of its creation with historian and artist Nell Painter, author of The History of White People among other books and recipient of Guggenheim and Fulbright fellowships.
