In his latest mystery featuring D Hunter, George combines the history of African-American music he’s documented in films such as Brooklyn Boheme and in books including Hippest Trip in America and Where Did Our Love Go? with a vibrant imagination for plot and character. D Hunter, the bodyguard introduced in The Plot against Hip-Hop, precipitates, then investigates, a deadly shoot-out while on duty protecting a rap star. Greenlight is proud to partner with St. Joseph's College and The Brooklyn Rail to present the Brooklyn Voices Series of lectures, forums, performances, and public discussion at St. Joseph's College. The aim of the Brooklyn Voices Series is to promote and enhance the creative vitality of our home neighborhoods of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill by providing local writers, artists, and intellectuals with a forum in which to discuss and present their works, and to make a meaningful contribution to the thriving intellectual culture of the neighborhood. This season, Brooklyn Voices hosts local authors Touré and Nelson George in a conversation about literature and race, to be held in a grand tent on St. Joseph's green space, the Mall.

Participant bios:

Touré’s writing regularly appears in publications such as The New York Times, Ebony, and The New Yorker. His three previous books are the short story collection The Portable Promised Land, the novel Soul City, and a collection of his journalism Never Drank the Kool-Aid. He is a regular contributor on culture for MSNBC and hosts two programs on the FUSE network: The Hiphop Shop and On the Record. He also serves on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominating Committee. Touré lives in New York.

Nelson George, author of the novel The Plot Against Hop Hop (Akashic, 2011), is one of the first writers to document hip hop culture and is the author of several award-winning books on the subject, including Hip Hop America and The Death of Rhythm & Blues; he also coauthored (with Simmons) Russell Simmons's autobiography Life and Def. He directed Queen Latifah in the HBO film Life Support, and is an executive producer of VH1's long-running Hip Hop Honors broadcast.
